Deep learning and fuzzy logic to implement a hybrid wind turbine pitch control
This work focuses on the control of the pitch angle of wind turbines. This is not an easy task due to the nonlinearity, the complex dynamics, and the coupling between the variables of these renewable energy systems. This control is even harder for floating offshore wind turbines, as they are subjected to extreme weather conditions and the disturbances of the waves. To solve it, we propose a hybrid system that combines fuzzy logic and deep learning. Deep learning techniques are used to estimate the current wind and to forecast the future wind. Estimation and forecasting are combined to obtain the effective wind which feeds the fuzzy controller. Simulation results show how including the effective wind improves the performance of the intelligent controller for different disturbances. For low and medium wind speeds, an improvement of 21% is obtained respect to the PID controller, and 7% respect to the standard fuzzy controller. In addition, an intensive analysis has been carried out on the influence of the deep learning configuration parameters in the training of the hybrid control system. It is shown how increasing the number of hidden units improves the training. However, increasing the number of cells while keeping the total number of hidden units decelerates the training.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Gender attributions and the construction of identities in children's literature on prehistory
This study aims to analyze the gender attributions and identity-building mechanisms of children's literary narratives about prehistory. To this end, it applies the technique of content analysis to describe and interpret the meaning of texts and illustrations from the space-action narrative parameters. The results obtained report the permanence of symbolic attributions and expressions of the genre from androcentric approaches, which limit the didactic transposition of the latest scientific advances.
Advertising plays a key role in how we understand territory, especially in a modern society that is constantly incentivized to consume certain products. This is not only reflected in communications media but also throughout our culture, since advertising contributes to the construction of collective imaginaries around the use or acquisition of products. In this paper, we will be analyzing how this construction has developed in the case of rail transport — and what message is being communicated through it. We will also look at how territory is perceived as both a physical component and inherent feature of this mode of transportation. Regarding the relationship between rail transport and territory, advertising communications have evolved in both form and content as improvements and changes were applied to rail infrastructure in Spain, especially following the inauguration of a high-speed rail service. This article offers a diachronic analysis, reviewing advertising campaigns launched by Renfe (the Spanish National Railway Network) and, in particular, looking at references to the territory and society as a whole, tracking how the treatment of these topics has changed. Procedure to explore a ternary mixture diagram to find the appropriate gradient profile in liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. Application to determine four primary aromatic amines in napkins
The purpose of this work is to develop a tool to search for a gradient profile with ternary or binary
mixtures in liquid chromatography, that can provide well-resolved chromatograms in the shortest time
for multianalyte analysis. This approach is based exclusively on experimental data and does not require
a retention time model of the compounds to be separated. The methodology has been applied for the
quantification of four primary aromatic amines (PAAs) using HPLC with fluorescence detector (FLD). Aniline (ANL), 2,4-diaminotoluene (TDA), 4,4
-methylenedianiline (MDA) and 2-aminobiphenyl (ABP) have
been selected since their importance in food contact materials (FCM).
In order to achieve that, partial least squares (PLS) models have been fitted to relate CMP (control
method parameters) and CQA (critical quality attributes). Specifically, PLS models have been fitted using
30 experiments for each one of the four CQA (resolution between peaks and total elution time), considering 33 predictor variables (the composition of the methanol and acetonitrile in the mobile phase and the
time of each one of the 11 isocratic segments of the gradient). These models have been used to predict
new candidate gradients, and then, some of those predictions (the ones with resolutions above 1.5, in absolute value, and final time lower than 20 min) have been experimentally validated. Detection capability
of the method has been evaluated obtaining 1.8, 189.4, 28.8 and 3.0 μg L−1 for ANL, TDA, MDA and ABP,
respectively.
Finally, the application of chemometric tools like PARAFAC2 allowed the accurate quantification of
ANL, TDA, MDA and ABP in paper napkins in the presence of other interfering substances coextracted
in the sample preparation process. ANL has been detected in the three napkins analysed in quantities
between 33.5 and 619.3 μg L−1, while TDA is present in only two napkins in quantities between 725.9
and 1908 μg L−1. In every case, the amount of PAAs found, exceeded the migration limits established in
European regulations. The authors thank the Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León for financial support through project BU052P20, cofinanced with FEDER funds. M.M. Arce wish to thank JCyL for her postdoctoral contract through project BU052P20
Evaluation of biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and organic amendments application on the bioremediation of recalcitrant hydrocarbons of soil
In the present work, the operational conditions for improving the degradation rates of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHs) in contaminated soil from a machinery park were optimized at a microcosms scale along a 90-
days incubation period. In this study, bioremediation strategies and an organic amendment have been tested to
verify the remediation of soil contaminated with different hydrocarbons, mineral oils, and heavy metals. Specifically, designed biostimulation and bioaugmentation strategies were compared with and without adding
vermicompost. The polluted soil harboring multiple contaminants, partially attenuated for years, was used. The
initial profile showed enrichment in heavy linear alkanes, suggesting a previous moderate weathering. The
application of vermicompost increased five and two times the amounts of available phosphorus (P) and
exchangeable potassium (K), respectively, as a direct consequence of the organic amendment addition. The
microbial activity increased due to soil acidification, which influenced the solubility of P and other micronutrients. It also impacted the predominance and variability of the different microbial groups and the incubation,
as reflected by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) results. An increase in the alkaline phosphatases and proteases
linked to bacterial growth was displayed. This stimulation of microbial metabolism correlated with the degradation rates since TPHs degradation’ efficiency after vermicompost addition reached 32.5% and 34.4% of the
initial hydrocarbon levels for biostimulation and bioaugmentation, respectively. Although Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were less abundant in this soil, results also decreased, especially for the most abundant, the
phenanthrene. Despite improving the degradation rates, results revealed that recalcitrant and hydrophobic petroleum compounds remained unchanged, indicating that mobility, linked to bioavailability, probably represents
the limiting step for further soil recovery. This work is funded by the GREENER project of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (Grant Agreement No. 826312). S. The effect of halogenation of salicylaldehyde on the antiproliferative activities of {Δ/Λ-[Ru(bpy)2(X,Y-sal)]BF4} complexes†
Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes are widely used in biological fields, due to their physico-chemical and photophysical properties. In this paper, a series of new chiral Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes (1–5) with the general formula {Δ/Λ-[Ru(bpy)2(X,Y-sal)]BF4} (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridyl; X,Y-sal = 5-bromosalicylaldehyde (1), 3,5-dibromosalicylaldehyde (2), 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde (3), 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde (4) and 3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylaldehy (5)) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, and 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy. Also, the structures of complexes 1 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystallography; these results showed that the central Ru atom adopts a distorted octahedral coordination sphere with two bpy and one halogen-substituted salicylaldehyde. DFT and TD-DFT calculations have been performed to explain the excited states of these complexes. The singlet states with higher oscillator strength are correlated with the absorption signals and are mainly described as 1MLCT from the ruthenium centre to the bpy ligands. The lowest triplet states (T1) are described as 3MLCT from the ruthenium center to the salicylaldehyde ligand. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the observed unstructured band at around 520 nm for complexes 2, 4 and 5. Biological studies on human cancer cells revealed that dihalogenated ligands endow the Ru(II) complexes with enhanced cytotoxicity compared to monohalogenated ligands. In addition, as far as the type of halogen is concerned, bromine is the halogen that provides the highest cytotoxicity to the synthesized complexes. All complexes induce cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 and apoptosis, but only complexes bearing Br are able to provoke an increase in intracellular ROS levels and mitochondrial dysfunction.Research Council of the University of Isfahan (Iran) for financial support of this work.
