"That magic efffect". Matías Laviña and the stained-glass windows of Leon Cathedral
of profound change within Europe that favored the recovery of a forgotten art form. Spain was slow to join this
trend and the early days of the restoration of the Cathedral of Leon constitute an eloquent testimony of the
limitations that existed in that respect. The proposals of the architect in charge of its restoration, Matías Laviña,
reflect his interest in this art form and his preference for stained-glass of a pictorial nature, the perfection of
which he thought to achieve, as if on a test bench, intervening in the works that had been conserved
Transition Metal-Free Synthesis of Halobenzo[b]furans from O-Aryl Carbamates via o-Lithiation Reactions
A straightforward and transition metal-free one-pot protocol to synthesize halobenzo[b]furans has been developed employing simple and easily available starting materials such as O-aryl carbamates and alkynylsulfones. The fine-tuning of the different steps involved was key to achieving a successful one-pot procedure. Initially, a directed ortho-lithiation process, which uses the carbamate as the directed metalation group, was crucial in providing access to O-2-alkynylaryl N,N-diethyl carbamates by a direct alkynylation of the o-lithiated carbamate, with arylsulfonylalkynes as electrophilic reagents. Cyclization of the generated o-alkynylaryl carbamates was successfully accomplished through a strategy involving in situ carbamate alkaline hydrolysis under conventional heating or microwave irradiation, coupled with a subsequent heterocyclization step delivering the desired benzo[b]furans. A wide variety of new halobenzo[b]furans has been synthesized and their utility has been demonstrated by their further transformation. This research was funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and FEDER (PID2020-115789GB-C21), and Junta de Castilla y León and FEDER (BU049P20). Validation of ultrasonic pulse to quality control of recycled aggregate self-compacting concrete
Trabajo presentado en: 9th Euro-American Congress on Construction Pathology, Rehabilitation Technology and Heritage Management, REHABEND 2022. En Granada, durante los días 13-16 de septiembre de 2022One of the main operations in any civil work is to verify that the concrete supplied and placed on site reaches the required minimum compressive strength. This verification is usually performed statistically through the preparation and testing of a large number of specimens. However, its indirect control is also useful due to its simplicity, ease of execution, and low cost. One of the most common methods to perform this operation is the measurement of the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) of the cast concrete, checking that its value corresponds to the necessary concrete’s strength class. This study aims to analyze whether this indirect measurement, widely used in vibrated concrete produced with natural aggregate, is also valid when large quantities of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) are added to Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC). For this purpose, six SCC mixes were produced with 100% coarse RCA and variable fine RCA contents (0%, 50%, and 100%). In addition, two different types of powder were used: limestone filler <0.063 mm and limestone fines 0/0.5 mm. The determination of the compressive strength and the UPV at 7 and 28 days in all mixes allowed demonstrating the existence of a close relationship between these two magnitudes in this type of concrete. It was even possible to develop highly accurate simple-regression models to interrelate both variables. These findings show that the use of SCC with RCA in engineering works would still allow the control of compressive strength using one of the most common traditional techniques, the ultrasonic pulse. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]
Calculation of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (IPAR) for traditional crops in Castilla y León, Spain
Comunicación presentada en: XII Congreso Nacional y III Internacional de Ingeniería Termodinámica (12 CNIT), June 19- July 1, Madrid (Spain)Agriculture is one of the most important economic activities in the Castilla y León region (Spain), approximately one-third of the land area is destined for this use. The role of agriculture in rural areas is essential from a territorial perspective, where rural depopulation is originating a crisis in the countryside. Moreover, climate change is having a major impact on agricultural productivity as a consequence, among others, of the increase in the frequency and the severity of extreme events, especially in Mediterranean regions. For these reasons, it is essential to highlight the vision of agriculture as a multifunctional activity. Besides good management, productivity depends on many other factors, such as soil properties or climatic factors. A decisive climatic variable, which is often not considered in the planning and management of the crops, is the Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), specifically, the Intercepted Photosynthetically Active Radiation (IPAR).The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation under the I+D+i state program “Challenges Research Projects” (Ref. Machine learning techniques for estimation of BIPV production
Comunicación presentada en: XII Congreso Nacional y III Internacional de Ingeniería Termodinámica (12 CNIT), June 19- July 1, Madrid (Spain)This study evaluated the performance of nine ANNs to estimate the electricity production of a BIPV system from meteorological data that are generally accessible from ground-based meteorological stations. Solar irradiance was proved to be the most adequate input variable to predict PV production with a simple ANN. However, the accuracy of this simple model was notably improved with the inclusion of the temperature and relative humidity. Wind speed and direction were less relevant as their statistical indicators highlighted. Indeed, all reviewed ANN structures shown good performance as the ܴܯܵܧ and ܧܤܯ kept relatively low. Besides, the largest number of neurons does not lead to a better performance.Financial support provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation (Ref. Conversion of a double-tetranuclear cluster silver helicate into a dihelicate via a rare desulfurization process
We present the first example of a silver double-tetranuclear cluster helicate [Ag4L2]2 obtained from a bisthiosemicarbazone ligand using electrochemical synthesis. This cluster helicate undergoes a rare desulfurization process in chloroform giving rise to a cationic silver dihelicate [Ag2(H2L)2]SO4. This is the first silver mediated desulfurization reaction.FEDER cofunded-grants: from Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria, Xunta de Galicia, 2017 GRC GI-1682 (ED431C 2017/01), 2018 GRC GI-1584 (ED431C 2018/13), MetalBIO Network (ED431D 2017/01), Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, METALBIO (CTQ2017-90802-REDT) and MultiMetDrugs (RED2018-102471-T)
