Gender and race in Langston Hughes’ poetry of the Spanish Civil War
African American poet Langston Hughes worked as a press correspondent during the Spanish civil war. This experience left an imprint in his production and particularly in his poetry, giving light to significant advances in his entwinement of race, gender, and identity. The acclaimed diversity of Hughes’ feminine models, and his inclusive stance find difficult accommodation in the poetic corpus about Spain. Using a critical appraisal of race, class and gender divisions, the poetic representation of female characters is discussed attending to their different forms of inclusion and exclusion. Their relationship with later developments in Hughes’ poetic construction of African American female agency is assessed, and the singularity of certain characters in the Spanish corpus is explored. Finally, conclusions are drawn to demonstrate the relevant and understudied contributions of this corpus for the better understanding of Hughes’ feminine universe as a whole
Closed-form equations for the calculation of stress intensity factors for embedded cracks in round bars subjected to tensile load
Fatigue crack propagation initiated from internal defects is a typical mechanism observed in high cycle fatigue
(HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) of cylindrical tensile specimens subjected to uniaxial cyclic loads. To
study the fatigue crack propagation of these embedded cracks by means of a fracture mechanics approach, solutions for the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) for different crack configurations are needed. In this paper, a set of
closed-form equations for the calculation of the SIF of embedded cracks in round bars subjected to tensile load is
presented. Two sets of solutions are provided, which allow for different levels of approach to be considered. The
first solution provides the SIF for the vertex points of an internal elliptical crack as a function of three dimensionless parameters related to crack size, crack position and crack aspect ratio. The second solution is a
simplification for eccentric circular cracks located at any position of the cross section. The methodology
necessary for the application to the study of fatigue crack propagation is also presented, and a comparison with
those obtained from experimental tests is included, which exhibits a very good capacity for prediction. The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Junta de Castilla y Leon (Spain) through grant BU-002-P20, co-financed by FEDER funds
Stakeholder governance and private benefits: The case of politicians in Spanish cajas
Our research focuses on the private benefits of politicians as board directors of Spanish savings banks (cajas). We
use hand-collected data on the political affiliation and personal loans of 1,578 directors to investigate whether
political directors used private benefits through excessive personal loans, loans granted to their political parties,
or the institutions they represented. Our results show that a higher proportion of political directors on a board is
associated with larger personal loans and with better terms than those granted to non-political directors.
Furthermore, this higher proportion is also linked to larger loans granted to the public administrations that the
political directors represented on the cajas’ governing board. Finally, we also find in-group favouritism based on
the social identity theory and directors’ party identification. Therefore, political directors make greater use of
private benefits when allocated to their political party and its members. This study was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Grant ECO2017-85356), the UAM - Comunidad de Madrid Research Project for Young Researchers (SI3-PJI-2021-00276) and it benefited from the Professorship Excellence Program in accordance with the multi-year agreement signed by the Government of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Madrid (Line #3). The impact of the circular economy on sustainable development: A European panel data approach
The circular economy (CE) has attracted considerable attention because of its potential to help achieve sustainable development (SD). This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the effect of the CE on the three dimensions of SD at the country level. We analysed the impact of each CE source of value (renewable energy, reuse,
repair, recycling) and the influence of an overall factor-analysis-derived measure of the CE on the economic, environmental and social dimensions of SD. The aim was to compare the individual impacts and outcomes of the CE
and its sources of value in a single study. Panel data analysis was performed using a sample of 25 European countries for the period 2010 to 2019. The findings show a major impact of the CE on achieving SD, which has positive
effects on the economy, environment and society. However, the results show that the impact of each CE value
source on the three SD dimensions varies. While renewable energies and reuse reduce the impact on the environment, recycling has no effect, and repair increases GHG emissions. However, repair is the only CE source with a
positive economic impact at the country level. Finally, renewable energy, repair and recycling reduce unemployment. Decision makers should conduct impact analysis to design suitable, efficient and targeted measures depending on each country's specific objectives
4-ethyphenol detection in wine by fullerene modified screen-printed carbon electrodes
This work shows the potential of modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) for sensitive and selective
detection of 4-ethylphenol in wine. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and fullerene C60 (C60), modified sensors have
been compared. pH of the supporting electrolyte, deposition time and working temperature have been optimized
considering their influence in the voltammetric pulse response of 4-ethylphenol. Under the optimal conditions of
measurement, the developed activated C60/SPCE (AC60/SPCE) shows the best performance, with a detection
capability of 400 μg/L and 700 μg/L, when using deposition times of 14 min and 6 min, respectively (α = β =
0.05). The reproducibility of the developed sensor resulted better when a deposition time of 6 min was used (5.4
%, n = 3). The influence of different interferents on the analytical response has been studied, as well as their
application in the determination of 4-ethylphenol in different wine samples.Authors would like to acknowledge funding obtained by Junta de Castilla y León (BU018G19) and Agencia Estatal de Investigación (PID2020-117095RB-I00)
