A distinctive ageing: Age and people with intellectual disabilities

    Get PDF
People with intellectual disabilities have seen their life expectancy increase in recent years to match that of the general population. The aging of each person will depend on the events experienced throughout their lives, their illnesses, and the psychosocial aspects of their environment. In spite of this, in the case of people with intellectual disabilities, there is evidence of a peculiar way of aging, with signifi cant changes with respect to the general population that affect the age of onset of the fi rst symptoms of aging, and physical, emotional, and health status changes. This article performs a systematic review of the literature to demonstrate the peculiarities of aging in people with intellectual disabilities, concluding on the need to know these changes to adequately guide professional care and thus improve their quality of lif

Silica Nanoparticle/Fluorescent Dye Assembly Capable of Ultrasensitively Detecting Airborne Triacetone Triperoxide: Proof-of-Concept Detection of Improvised Explosive Devices in the Workroom

    No full text
We describe the proof of concept of a portable testing setup for the detection of triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a common component in improvised explosive devices. The system allows for field testing and generation of real-time results to test for TATP vapor traces in air by simply using circulation of the air samples through the sensing mechanism under the air conditioning system of an ordinary room. In this way, the controlled trapping of the analyte in the chemical sensor gives reliable results at extremely low concentrations of TATP in air under real-life conditions, suitable for daily use in luggage storage for airlines or a locker room for a major sporting event. The reported fluorescent methodology is very sensitive and selective, allowing for the trapping of triacetone triperoxide in the chemical sensor to give reliable results at very low concentrations in air under ambient conditions, by comparing the fluorescence of the material before and after exposition to TATP traces in air. This research was funded by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (Grant SPS G5536) and the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Grants PID2019-111215RB-I00 and PDC2022-133955-I00). What colour are you? Smartphone addiction traffic lights and user profiles

    No full text
Purpose: The key concern nowadays is smartphone addiction and user profiles. Following the risk and protective factors framework, the authors aim to characterize smartphone users according to two levels: (1) individual: referred to the use (i.e. boredom proneness, compulsive app downloading smartphone addiction) and (2) microsystem: referred to family and peers (i.e. family harmony and phubbing). Besides, the authors will derive useful managerial implications and strategies. Design/methodology/approach: First, an extensive literature revision and in-depth interviews with experts were employed to identify the addiction-related variables at the individual and microsystem level. Second, information was collected from a sample of 275 Spanish smartphone users, and a K-means clustering algorithm was employed to classify smartphone users. Findings: The proposed traffic lights schema identifies three users’ profiles (red, yellow and green) regarding their smartphone addiction and considering individual and microsystem critical variables. Originality/value: This study proposes a practical and pioneer traffic lights schema to classify smartphone users and facilitate each cluster's strategies development. The authors are grateful to funding by the European Comission, under an Erasmus + project with reference 2019-1-ES01-KA201-064250

Violence and abuse against women with disabilities: Relevance for professionals in Spain

    No full text
Violence against women with disabilities is a difficult situation to detect and requires a multidisciplinary approach. The objective is to identify the needs and deficiencies in the care and treatment of cases of violence against women with disabilities in order to develop strategies for improvement. 295 professionals participated in the Women and Disability Conference, organised by the Spanish CERMI in 2019, in three locations in the CastillaLeon ´ Community. This is a qualitative study with focus groups. The information was analysed and coded, creating four categories: identification, detection, action and prevention. All types of violence are found. There is little information about this situation. The participants propose to guarantee help based on trust, listening and individuality. Professionals show a good knowledge of the problem. There is a lack of preventive programmes, coordination between the bodies involved, a mediator to accompany the process and comprehensive support to achieve social inclusion

The Impact of In Vitro Digestion on the Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity of Spanish Ciders

    No full text
Various factors can influence the polyphenol content and the antioxidant capacity of ciders, such as the apple variety, its degree of maturity, apple farming and storage conditions, and the cider-fermentation method, all of which explains why ciders of different origin present different values. In addition, digestive processes could have some effects on the properties of cider. Hence, the objective of this study is to characterize Spanish ciders in terms of their polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity and to ascertain whether those same properties differ in digested ciders. In total, 19 ciders were studied from three different zones within Spain: Asturias (A) (10), the Basque Country (BC) (6), and Castile-and-Leon (CL) (3). A range of assays was used to determine the total polyphenol content and the antioxidant capacity of the ciders. In addition, a digestive process was simulated in vitro, assessing whether the use of amylase might influence the recovery of bioactive compounds after digestion. The Basque Country ciders presented higher total polyphenol contents (830 ± 179 GAE/L) and higher antioxidant capacities (DPPH: 5.4 ± 1.6 mmol TE/L; ABTS: 6.5 ± 2.0 mmol TE/L; FRAP: 6.9 ± 1.6 mmol TE/L) than the other ciders that were studied. The in vitro digestion process, regardless of the use of amylase, implied a loss of phenolic compounds (598 ± 239 mg GAE/L undigested samples; 466 ± 146 mg GAE/L digested without amylase samples; 420 ± 115 mg GAE/L digested with amylase samples), although the variation in antioxidant activity depended on the assay chosen for its determination

The surprising announcement of an unknown pandemic caused by a coronavirus in the early 2020s confronted the world's education systems with a major challenge. Solutions, mainly technology-based, were quickly sought to continue formal education, but much non-formal education was stalled because its ultimate purpose was not official certification. The aim of this article is to highlight the relevance of virtual training in this type of context through the specific example of the University of Burgos and to highlight the much-needed role of the University in the development of lifelong learning for all citizens regardless of their age or place of residence.O anúncio surpreendente de uma pandemia desconhecida, causada por um coronavírus, no início de 2020, colocou os sistemas educacionais do mundo perante um grande desafio.
