Normal or parallel configuration in spectroelectrochemistry? Bidimensional spectroelectroanalysis in presence of an antioxidant compound
This work demonstrates how the way a chemical system is sampled plays a key role in spectroelectroanalysis, illustrated by the quantification of an analyte in presence of an antioxidant compound. For this purpose, bidimensional spectroelectrochemistry experiments were performed using epinephrine as the model analyte and ascorbic acid as antioxidant and interfering compound, as a proof of concept. This is the first time that three calibration curves are obtained simultaneously on a single spectroelectrochemistry data set, one for the electrochemical signal and two for the optical responses in normal and parallel configurations. The differences between the two optical arrangements, that are related to the diffusion process which is an essential feature for the spectroelectrochemical detection of compounds, have been experimentally demonstrated. As can be observed, the spectral signal in parallel configuration allows us to obtain the best analytical results, since in this configuration only the first micrometers of the solution adjacent to the electrode surface are sampled, thus removing the interfering effect of the antioxidant compound. This fact does not occur with either the electrochemical signal or the spectral response in normal configuration. Furthermore, it has been shown that the parallel configuration provides better results than the normal configuration in terms of sensitivity. In summary, epinephrine is successfully detected in a simple and effective way, even in the presence of a direct antioxidant compound such as ascorbic acid at different concentrations levels, which makes spectroelectrochemistry a good choice for quantitative analysis.Authors acknowledge the financial support given by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033, PID2020-113154RB-C21) and Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Grant RED2018-102412-T).
The knowledge society is also the learning society. Therefore, we must reflect on the direction of current teaching and which active methodologies can contribute to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of learning. The consolidation of a literature on science education is essential if we intend to maintain the progress achieved so far, as well as to develop new changes and improvements on a robust support. Thus, we are at a point where it is necessary to analyze the situation of this line of research. So, the main objective of this study is to provide the educational community with a current overview of the effect that active methodologies are having on science teaching in formal educational contexts. To this end, a systematic review of the literature published in the last decade on the presence of active methodologies in science teaching in high impact journals is presented. The results show clear evidence of the effectiveness of a diversity of active methodologies in different specific educational parameters, although more research is needed, especially in the early stages of education, focused on the evaluation of the integral competence development demanded by today's society
A Low-Cost System Using a Big-Data Deep-Learning Framework for Assessing Physical Telerehabilitation: A Proof-of-Concept
The consolidation of telerehabilitation for the treatment of many diseases over the last
decades is a consequence of its cost-effective results and its ability to offer access to rehabilitation in
remote areas. Telerehabilitation operates over a distance, so vulnerable patients are never exposed to
unnecessary risks. Despite its low cost, the need for a professional to assess therapeutic exercises
and proper corporal movements online should also be mentioned. The focus of this paper is on
a telerehabilitation system for patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease in remote villages and
other less accessible locations. A full-stack is presented using big data frameworks that facilitate
communication between the patient and the occupational therapist, the recording of each session,
and real-time skeleton identification using artificial intelligence techniques. Big data technologies are
used to process the numerous videos that are generated during the course of treating simultaneous
patients. Moreover, the skeleton of each patient can be estimated using deep neural networks for
automated evaluation of corporal exercises, which is of immense help to the therapists in charge of
the treatment programs. This work was supported by project PI19/00670 of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Spain.
This TFG has the mission of revealing the perception of primary school students
towards scientific competence and improving these attitudes in the classroom. To this end, an
inclusive STEAM Teaching Proposal has been implemented in a 5th grade Primary Education
classroom that incorporates Universal Design for Learning, as well as various active
methodologies, highlighting scientific enquiry and engineering design. It is a multidisciplinary
integrated model that uses storytelling as the guiding thread of the activities, by means of the
comic-manga called One Piece. After the proposal, a questionnaire was given to the students
with closed questions intended to measure various aspects of attitudes towards scientific
competence. The results have been positive in the group, with the fact that the girls' average is
better than the boys' being revealing. Even so, certain deficits are found, such as the low use of
the laboratory and visits to scientific institutions. As an improvement, this research needs
further study over time
In learning a subject, it is important to acquire technical skills, those related to a specific
task or situation, and soft skills, desirable skills to develop certain jobs that do not depend
on the acquired knowledge, among which the 4Cs stand out (creativity, critical thinking,
collaboration and communication). The active methodology “Project-Based Learning”
allows the teacher to guide students through a project in which the will learn technical skills
and soft skills. This document presents an intervention proposal in the classroom in which
Project-Based Learning is applied to the professional module “Industrial Computing” oh a
Higher Level Training Cycle that could be included within the STEM degrees (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). As technical skills, Computer Integrated
Manufacturing (CIM) will be covered using a set of Arduino based electronic devices. The proposal has been made based on theoretical content and the internship. Finally, the
strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats presented by the proposal are analysed and,
based on bibliography, the difficulties that could arise in its implementation are evaluated,
as well as possible solutions
