Fostering the Gender Spectrum Inclusion in English Language Teacher Education
The inclusion of gender in language teacher education and the EFL
classroom has been a matter of concern for decades, with a marked interest in
sexuality and queer pedagogies in more recent times. This demonstrates an interest
in the relationship between language, sexuality and education, and more specifically,
in enlarging the gender spectrum within language teacher education. This proposal
combines a participatory design model for classroom intervention with a practical
and interactive digital tool so that both educators and student teachers can address
the inclusion of gender spectrum in their teaching practice

Eco-efficient concrete in the circular economy of the precast industry: an example of sustainability
Póster presentado en: 13th International Conference on Future Environment and Energy ICFEE 2023, durante los días 13-15 de enero en TokyoThe circular economy is an economic model of production and consumption that involves reusing, repairing, restoring, and recycling materials after their useful life. The use of waste as raw materials is one of the actions to establish this model in
companies to achieve emissions at zero or neutral cost. The European prefabricated directives promote the implementation of a series of voluntary sustainability actions such as: the reduction of waste to be sent to landfill, the increase of additions to cement
of at least 25%, an increase of 25% in the proportion of recycled aggregates to be used and reduction or recycling of water consumption, all for the benefit of reducing CO2.This work exposes a real example of a company of prefabricated structural elements
of construction applying the previous actions, incorporating a waste centre for its own and external use, where the waste materials are given a second life generating a new concrete. This new recycled concrete is designed with the substitution of natural
aggregates for recycled aggregates in different proportions, even up to 100%, using recycled additions to the cement, using recycled water from the concreting plant itself in its process. The sustainable eco-concrete resulting from HR-30 and HR-45
resistance, self-compacting, is mechanically characterized and incorporated into the prefabricated elements tested also in prototypes against bending, shear and deformation stresses. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]
Analysis of the deformational behavior of a clayey foundation soil stabilized with ladle furnace slag (LFS) using a finite element software
Comunicación oral presentada en: Second International Conference on Construction Materials and Structures ICCMS-2022, durante los días 13-19 de diciembre en India, de forma online. The stabilization of soft clayey soils to improve their stress–strain behavior is one of the most widely used geotechnical engineering techniques. Traditionally, lime and cement have been used as stabilizers, although other products such as Ladle Furnace Slag (LFS) are now used, given the environmental imperative to reuse materials and to reduce both the consumption of raw materials and the use of landfill sites. LFS is a by-product of the steelmaking industry, with limited applicability in other industrial processes, but its chemical composition, rich in calcium, magnesium, silica, and alumina, mean that it may be used as a binder for clayey soils as a substitute for lime. This geo-mechanical research is focused on the analysis of the plastic behavior and the strength of a low bearing capacity clayey soil mix with 5% added LFS. The following properties were evaluated: plasticity (Atterberg limits), California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Unconfined Compression Strength (UCS), and direct shear strength. The evolution of UCS was verified through tests on samples held in a humid chamber at a constant relative humidity of 95% ± 5%. and temperature of 20 °C ± 3 °C, after 3, 7, 28, 54, and 90 days of curing. Based on the results, a numerical analysis was performed with a two-dimensional finite element software: RS2 (Rocscience). The behavior of a footing-foundation system supported on stabilized soil was modeled, with a plate load test geometry and with the laboratory parameters. The results, compared with those obtained with untreated soil and with a lime-stabilized soil, demonstrated that the LFS mix increased the stiffness of the layered soil (less settlement) and improved its bearing capacity. The applicability of LFS for soil stabilization and its use in geotechnical works such as foundations and embankments open up fields of application that are likely to offer satisfactory alternatives for these by-products.This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]
Performance of Fiber-Reinforced Sustainable Concretes Manufactured with Aggregate and Binder from Steelmaking Slag
Comunicación oral presentado en: Building for the Future: Durable, Sustainable, Resilient (fib symposium) 2023, celebrado en Estambul (Turquía) durante los días 5-7 de junio. It is well known that the construction industry generates a huge amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, mainly emitted during the manufacture of cement and the exploitation of quarries for aggregate production. On the other hand, steelmaking industry landfills millions of tons of waste (slag) that can be reused as raw materials in innovative processes. For these reasons, in order to preserve natural resources and improve the sustainability of concrete manufacturing, this paper addresses the design and behavior of high-workability and fiber-reinforced concrete, produced with electric arc furnace slag in substitution to aggregates and with cement that contains ground granulated blast furnace slag and/or ladle furnace slag as supplementary cementitious materials. The main in-fresh, mechanical and durability properties were experimentally evaluated, which showed good performance results in all the cases. Good adhesion between fibers, aggregates and cementitious matrix within the concrete specimens was also observed. Furthermore, these sustainable concretes reached self-compactability, which enable an energy-saving placement and its use in a wide range of building applications, thus contributing to the circular economy in the construction sector. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]. Semi-solid electrodes based on injectable hydrogel electrolytes for shape-conformable batteries
The development of new battery concepts, chemistries and fabrication processes is driven by the bloom of emerging applications in a variety of fields ranging from the Internet of Things to Smart Healthcare. Shape factor-free and shape-conformable power sources are highly desired for integration with complex-shape electronic devices. Herein, a new fabrication process for shape-conformable batteries is explored. Battery cells having targeted shapes are fabricated and assisted by 3D printing. Then, flowable semi-solid electrodes are used to fill in the prefabricated parts of the battery cell. The use of injectable hydrogel electrolytes enables semi-solid electrodes to possess special rheological properties as they are flowable during the fabrication process, while gelation of the electrolytes ensures their immobility during battery operation. Herein, poly(vinyl alcohol):gallic acid gels are investigated for aqueous Zn–LiFePO4 batteries. After evaluation of the effect of electrode formulation on the rheological properties as well as the ionic and electronic properties, simple-shape and UBU-shape batteries were fabricated using the best formulation. The prototype achieved areal capacities above 3 mA h cm−2, utilization rate between 150 and 180 mA h g−1 (LFP), and capacity fading of 0.2% h−1. While the prototype demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed fabrication process, improvements are still required. Shrinking of gel electrolytes and parasitic electrochemical reactions associated with the battery chemistry and the operation conditions are identified as the main challenges to be addressed for improving the performance. The authors acknowledge the financial support by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and NextGenerationEU (TED2021-131651B-C21 and TED2021-131651B-C22) and Ramón y Cajal award (Ministry of Science and Innovation and European Social Funds, RYC2018-026086-I).
Variable neighborhood search approach to face‐shield delivery during pandemic periods
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and its rapid spread shook health authorities worldwide at the regional and national levels. Healthcare systems had difficulty acquiring important supplies, such as face shields, which at that time were essential for healthcare staff. The need for this material increased with the spread of the pandemic. In most areas, warehouses did not have a sufficient stock of this product. This situation has occurred in the cities and provinces of Burgos (Spain). Volunteers (citizens and small companies) owning three-dimensional printers offered themselves to manufacture face shields. These volunteers are called “makers.” Similarly, different organizations (mainly Civil Protection) took charge of transport activities (delivery of material to the makers, collection of face shields, and delivery of the latter to hospitals and other entities). In this study, we were tasked with developing a system for planning and rationalizing these activities. The problems that were solved included a vehicle routing problem with different characteristics compared with other models in the literature. A previuous work described this problem, and the heuristic method used for the planning. However, it is necessary to develop tools that are as efficient as possible for similar situations. In this study, we propose a mathematical formulation of the problem and a method based on the metaheuristic strategies variable neighborhood search and greedy randomize adaptative search procedure on a multistart framework. Different tests with real instances used during the period in which these activities were conducted show that the new method improves the results obtained by the previous method as well as the commercial software. The authors are grateful to the following entities and projects: The Spanish Research Agency (Projects PID2019-104263RB-C44, PDC2021–121021-C22, and PID2022-139543OB-C44) and the Regional Government of “Castilla y León” and FEDER funds (Project BU056P20)
