Acting with Lexicon and Lexicographical Resources: Critical Reflections on the Use of Lexical, Lexicographic and Digital Literacy in Virtual Environments in Academic Writing in GfL

    Get PDF
The paper deals with vocabulary acquisition in the academic writing process in advanced GfL in interaction with the development of appropriate language awareness and wide-ranging up-to-date digital literacy. The starting point is the observation that in the academic L2 writing process the extensive information potential of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual lexicographic and lexico-grammatical online resources as well as other language technology tools is not adequately known. Accordingly, the many digital language resources are not optimally used for methods of teaching vocabulary and acting with it, e.g. in academic writing. On the other hand, digital media occupy more and more space in our everyday life and also provide highly developed tools based on linguistic technology for various L2 competence areas, such as translation. The aim of this paper is therefore both to show ways of making sensible use of existing internet resources and to outline entirely new ways based on artificial intelligence. Selected resources will be used as examples to demonstrate the extensive information potential and to discuss possibilities for use in academic writing. An outlook points to the necessity of adapting to revolutionary technological changes in the field of foreign language didactics.S

    No full text

Estimation of bankruptcy rules with a priori unions for establishing new systems of quotas

    Get PDF
This paper addresses a sampling procedure for estimating extensions of the random arrival rule to those bankruptcy situations where there exist a priori unions. It is based on simple random sampling with replacement and it adapts an estimation method of the Owen value for transferable utility games with a priori unions, especially useful when the set of involved agents is sufficiently large. We analyse the theoretical statistical properties of the resulting estimator as well as we provide some bounds for the incurred error. Its performance is evaluated on two well-studied examples in literature where this allocation rule can be exactly obtained. Finally, we apply this sampling method to provide a new quota system for the milk market in Galicia (Spain) for checking the role of different territorial structures when they are taken as a priori unions. The resulting quotas estimator is also compared with two classical rules in bankruptcy literature.A. Size Matters: A Computational Study of Hydrogen Absorption in Ionic Liquids

    Get PDF
We combined both density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the molecular mechanisms governing hydrogen solvation in a total of 12 ionic liquids. Overall, the analysis of the structural properties under high temperature and pressure conditions revealed weak interactions between hydrogen and the ionic liquids, with a slight preference of this gas to be placed at the apolar domains. Interestingly, those ionic liquids comprising nitrate anions allow the accommodation of hydrogen molecules also in the polar areas. The study of the hydrogen velocity autocorrelation functions supports this observation. In addition, the structure of all of the tested ionic liquids was almost insensitive to the addition of hydrogen, so the available free volume and cavity formation are presumably the most important factors affecting solubility. The financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2021-126148NA-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, UE) is gratefully acknowledged. This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Ocular Immunology and Inflammation on 5 Dec 2023, available at: https://doi.org/10.1080/09273948.2023.2285449Purpose: Inter-eye variability is a recognized characteristic of Dry Eye Disease (DED) and has been proposed as a diagnostic indicator in clinical practice. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic potential of the absolute difference between eyes in three key diagnostic tests recommended by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II (TFOS DEWS II) Diagnostic Methodology report: tear film osmolarity, Fluorescein Break-Up Time (FBUT), and ocular surface staining. Methods: A total of 180 participants were included in a cross-sectional study. Before a dry eye examination, participants completed an online self-administered OSDI questionnaire. The TFOS DEWS II diagnostic criteria for DED assessment were used: along with OSDI, osmolarity, FBUT and ocular surface staining were measured in all participants in both eyes following standardized methodology. Based on signs and symptoms, participants were diagnosed as having No DED or DED. After diagnosis, parameters were computed as the right and left eyes' absolute inter-eye difference (|OD-OS|). Results: Receiver Operating Characteristics analyses for computed parameters were used based on the previous diagnosis. ROC analyses showed that Osmolarity|OD-OS| have a diagnostic capability to differentiate between No DED and DED participants with a cut-off value of 9.5 mOsm/L (AUC = 0.745 ± 0.052, p < 0.003), whereas FBUT|OD-OS| and Corneal Stainning|OD-OS| have not (AUC, both p ≥ 0.160). Conclusion: The present study found that the Osmolarity|OD-OS| parameter could be used as a diagnostic indicator for DED assessment, while the FBUT|OD-OS| and the Corneal Staining|OD-OS| parameters do not have this capability.2024-12-06S

Advancing the European energy transition based on environmental, economic and social justice

Energy transition has implications not only for economic growth and social welfare but also for the planet. It is therefore important to provide a framework of quantifying how this transition might affect these aspects from a triple perspective. In this regard, an in-depth and critical analysis of the available reports, policy frameworks and initiatives on energy transition, under the sustainable and circular perspectives, has been developed. This manuscript provides a “know-how” framework to assist in decision making and to assess the effectiveness, gaps and future actions to be developed for an effective energy transition. It presents a set of indicators to assess the sustainable and circular potential of emerging technologies and renewable energy production schemes, focusing on the environmental, social and economic pillars. It also highlights the policies and initiatives that should be implemented to facilitate this transition, as well as analyzing a comparison between European countries on how to improve energy renewability in those with low scores in the energy transition indexes. This study provides a critical analysis of the implications on energy transition over environmental, social and economic sustainability, as well as on circularity. It provides a preselection of the most appropriate indicators (both quantitative and qualitative) to effectively analyze the transition. The outcomes of this study can help stakeholders, citizens and policy makers on where to focus to improve efficiency, renewability and technology development for a sustainable and circular energy transitionThis research has been supported by the BIORECER (No 101060684) and STAR4BBS (No 101060588) projects, both being funded by the European Commission HORIZON-CL6-2021-ZEROPOLLUTION-01. Traballo Fin de Grao en Medicina. Curso 2022-2023Justificación. Cardiac arrest currently has a poor prognosis. The most of the resuscitated patients go into coma due to brain injury, which is the main cause of death and long-term disability. In this context, it is essential to estimate the neurological prognosis of these patients in order to provide early and accurate information to their relatives and to avoid disproportionate care in patients who will not reach an acceptable neurological state. Several methods exist for this purpose, which have been described heterogeneously in different studies. Objectives. To determine whether the estimation of neurological prognosis can be reliably performed with a single predictor or whether it is necessary to combine several predictors, and to quantify the precocity of this estimation. Intraocular Pressure Fluctuation Throughout the Day

    Get PDF
Purpose To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) values at different time points, both in the total sample and according to iridocorneal angle aperture, to assess whether IOP fluctuations were constant throughout the day, and to examine correlations with other factors. Methods Over a single day, the IOP of 34 volunteers was measured at three-hour intervals from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To avoid any IOP value being affected by other measurements, anamnesis, slit-lamp evaluation (with iridocorneal angle measurement), and refractive status were performed after the final measurement. The differences between IOP values at different time points and IOP fluctuation at three-hour intervals were compared by ANOVA and Friedman test, respectively, both for the total group and according to iridocorneal angle aperture. For relationships, Pearson's correlation was performed for parametric variables and Spearman's correlation for nonparametric variables. Results Significant differences were observed in IOP between time points for the total sample (p < 0.001), but not for a narrow-angle group (p = 0.058). No significant differences were found in IOP fluctuations at three-hour intervals either in the total sample or according to angle aperture (all p ≥ 0.332). There was a positive correlation of IOP at different time points (all r ≥ 0.646, all p < 0.001) but no relationship with spherical equivalent, age, or sleep duration (all p ≥ 0.057). IOP at 12:00 p.m. was correlated with a 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. fluctuation (r = 0.428, p = 0.012); and IOP fluctuation between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. was correlated with age (r = 0.485, p = 0.004). Conclusion As IOP decreases from morning until at least 6:00 p.m., measuring these two values during clinical evaluation is essential for the effective monitoring and prevention of IOP-related diseases.S
