In this study, the improvement in SAE 10W-40 engine oil tribological performance after the addition of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoadditive and two different phosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) was investigated. Besides, the rheological behaviour of MgO-based nanolubricant and IL-based hybrid nanolubricants at the temperature range from 293.15 to 363.15 K was studied. The nanoparticle characterization was performed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tribological properties, friction coefficients and wear parameters of the formulated oil modified with 0.01 wt% MgO and 1 wt% ILs compared with the neat 10W-40 oil were performed and analysed using a ball-on-three-pins tribometer and a 3D optical profilometer, respectively. Further analysis on the worn surface was shown by Raman spectroscopy and SEM images illustrating the formation of the protective IL and MgO tribo-films as hybrid additives. In friction tests with sliding steel-steel tribo-pairs, IL3-based hybrid nanolubricant decreased the coefficient of friction and wear volume by 7% and 59%, respectively, in comparison with the neat SAE 10W-40, hence better positive synergies were found for MgO and IL3 as hybrid additives. Design and Characterization of Lubricants Based on Functionalized Nanoparticles
The main objective of this PhD thesis is to design and
characterize efficient nanolubricants based on three
polyalphaolefins
(PAOs) and nanoparticles (NPs) of metal oxides or ceramics
coated with organic acids for wind turbine gearboxes and
electric transmissions of electric vehicles. First, preliminary
tests and an in-depth literature survey on the time stability and
tribological behavior of nanodispersions containing chemically
modified nanoadditives were performed. Then, the
thermophysical and tribological properties of PAO
nanolubricants containing coated NPs (ZnO-OA, TiO2-OA, or
SiO2-SA)
were evaluated; in addition, possible tribological mechanisms
were analyzed by confocal Raman microscopy. All the
coated NPs studied improve the tribological behavior of their
base oil, being the best the SiO2-SA NPs
An overview on the relationship between residential radon and lung cancer: what we know and future research
We aim to provide an overview of the research available on indoor radon and lung cancer, with a special focus on Spanish investigations. Early studies on underground miners established the link between radon and lung cancer, which was later confirmed for the general population by residential case–control studies. Spain contributed with extensive evidence, including 5 multicentric, hospital-based, case–control studies in the last 30 years, exploring diverse aspects, such as radon's effect on never-smokers, molecular pathways linking radon exposure to lung cancer risk, survival rates, mortality burden, and occupational exposure. There is a well-established causal association between radon with lung cancer. Despite pioneering research performed in our country by the Galician Radon Laboratory, particularly on driver genes, the evidence on the potential molecular pathways which makes radon a carcinogen is sparse. Precision physics at High Luminosity LHC and future colliders
The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is the currently established theoretical
framework which describes, at a fundamental level, interactions among elementary particles.
The construction of high-energy colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) at CERN, the largest particle accelerator ever built, allowed scientists to test
their models at increasingly high energy scales. In recent years, the LHC has increasingly
focused its attention on the precise measurements of SM processes, as they play
a crucial role in the exploration of new physics. The emphasis on precision physics
has also motivated the development of the high luminosity (HL) LHC upgrade, and
the proposal of new high precision machines such as the FCC-ee. In this context, the
theoretical effort has to match the experimental work, because precise measurements
require an equal precision of the SM predictions. This argument applies also to theories
Beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and it becomes particularly relevant in the case of
Effective Field Theories (EFTs), where higher-order corrections can significantly impact
the bounds on new physics. The main focus of this thesis is the precision calculation
of processes in the SM and Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework,
including gg → HH, Drell Yan production qq → ll, and electroweak observables.
Finally, the ultimate goal is to make accurate predictions that can be tested on future
colliders, such as HL LHC and Fcc-ee. The study of this area is very important, and it
gives crucial information on the structure of new physics beyond the SM
Mental Illness in the American Novel: A Study of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and Otessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation.
Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2022-2023Our contemporary society is beginning to take seriously the mental problems and illnesses that affect too many people. Therefore, madness, depression, and anxiety, among others, are being considered openly by the public opinion, even by politicians. Literature has a long tradition in the representation of these topics although in the past, sometimes it dealt with mental disorders in an indirect way, as was the case, far instance, with women's anxieties, fears or postnatal depressions and the use of the trope of the ghost that was used by writers to refer to these states and conditions. The purpose of this research is to study two seminal fictions that have dealt with mental illnesses: Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (1963) and Otessa Moshfegh's My Year of Rest and Relaxation (2018). The analysis will cover two main objectives. The first one is to identify how these novels feature mental disorder and illustrate the circumstances that led the protagonists to suffer from it. In this sense, we shall take into account the fact that they are young women so that a gender perspective will be applied. The second main objective is to assess the social and cultural projection of these two works, that have become classics in the representation in literature of the topic of mental illness
Influencia del abono orgánico sobre el desarrollo y calidad del cacao producido en Almirante, Bocas del Toro-Panamá
El objetivo fue aportar una línea base para mejorar la
producción de cacao y hacer una primera exploración sobre los
diferentes actores que potencialmente podría afectar la
producción y calidad del cultivo, como el Cd o el efecto de la
sequía temporal en la región de Almirante, en Bocas del Toro,
República de Panamá. Se demostró que el abono orgánico
incrementó la biodisponibilidad de elementos esenciales en el
suelo y la absorción de nutrientes en la planta. Se encontró un
bajo contenido de Cd en el suelo derivando a la baja
concentración de Cd en el grano de cacao. El estudio del Clon
de cacao AS-CP-26-61 sirvió para identificar la toxicidad del
Cd que puede ser transferido desde el suelo a la planta. Se
relacionó el porcentaje de humedad del cultivo con el estrés
hídrico en la planta de cacao
LED-driven photo-Fenton process for micropollutant removal by nanostructured magnetite anchored in mesoporous silica
The presence of organic micropollutants in water bodies represents a threat to living organisms and ecosystems due to their toxicological effects and recalcitrance in conventional wastewater treatments. In this context, the application of heterogeneous photo-Fenton based on magnetite nanoparticles supported on mesoporous silica (SBA15) is proposed to carry out the non-specific degradation of the model compounds ibuprofen, carbamazepine, hormones, bisphenol A and the dye ProcionRed®. The operating conditions (i.e., pH, catalyst load and hydrogen peroxide concentration) were optimized by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The paramagnetic properties of the nanocatalysts allowed their repeated use in sequential batch operations with catalyst losses below 1%. The feasibility of the process was demonstrated as removal rates above 90% after twelve accomplished after twelve consecutive cycles. An alternative for tracing the path between supply and use tables in current and constant prices
Supply and use tables (SUT) in constant prices ensure coherent volume and price information across economic accounts. They are needed to appropriately measure technological change and connect physical and monetary models. To estimate SUTs in constant prices, researchers normally apply commodity-specific deflators to SUTs. From an economics perspective, deflators are undoubtedly cell-specific since exchanges of a commodity occur in different markets and institutional contexts. RAS can be used to calculate such cell-specific deflators. But deflating SUTs via RAS can become impossible due to excessive information requirements. This article revisits Path-RAS and applies it to build SUTs in constant prices. Our methodology lowers information requirements, enables cell-specific deflators, and avoids ad hoc adjustments. Additional information about specific industries or products can be included if existing and non-conflicting. We provide an empirical application based on the current 27 European Union countries to explore the accuracy of our estimations considering different information scenariosS
Problemas de memoria en pacientes con afección posterior a la COVID-19
Traballo Fin de Máster en Psicoloxía Xeral Sanitaria. Curso 2022-2023INTRODUCCIÓN. La afección posterior a la COVID-19 se caracteriza por la experimentación de sintomatología cognitiva y psicológica tras el periodo de infección aguda, siendo frecuentes los problemas de memoria y concentración, así como la sintomatología ansioso-depresiva. OBJETIVOS. Analizar las quejas subjetivas de memoria en pacientes con afección posterior a la COVID-19 y su rendimiento objetivo en función de la sintomatología neurológica durante la infección, y determinar la contribución de variables clínicas y psicopatológicas a estas quejas. MÉTODO. Se evaluó el rendimiento cognitivo de 100 personas hospitalizadas por COVID-19, con especial interés en la memoria, y se valoró el estado psicológico, 6 meses después del alta. RESULTADOS. Un 43,4% de la muestra manifestó tener problemas de memoria (MFE-30). Sin embargo, no se encontró relación entre estas quejas y su rendimiento objetivo en tests de aprendizaje verbal (MoCA_MIS, FCSRT), ni diferencias en función de la presencia de sintomatología neurológica. No se encontró relación entre las variables clínicas y las quejas de memoria, pero sí entre estas y la sintomatología psicológica. CONCLUSIONES. Los datos parecen indicar que las quejas subjetivas de memoria responden al malestar psicológico más que a deterioro de la memoria por daño neuralINTRODUCTION. Post-COVID-19 condition is characterized by the experience of cognitive and psychological symptomatology after the acute infection period, being frequent memory and concentration problems, as well as anxious-depressive symptomatology. OBJECTIVES. To analyze subjective memory complaints in patients with post-VOCID-19 involvement and their objective performance as a function of neurological symptomatology during infection, and to determine the contribution of clinical and psychopathological variables to these complaints. METHOD. The cognitive performance of 100 persons hospitalized for COVID-19 was evaluated, with special interest in memory, and psychological status was assessed, 6 months after discharge. RESULTS. A 43.4% of the sample reported having memory problems (MFE-30). However, no relationship was found between these complaints and their objective performance in verbal learning tests (MoCA_MIS, FCSRT), nor differences according to the presence of neurological symptomatology. No relationship was found between clinical variables and memory complaints, but there was a relationship between these and psychological symptomatology. CONCLUSIONS. The data seem to indicate that subjective memory complaints respond to psychological distress rather than to memory impairment due to neurological damag
