Teachers' digital competence. The case of the University System of Galicia

    Get PDF
The digital teaching competence of university professors is of vital importance to improving the quality of higher education, and for the strategic positioning of public universities in our country. The purpose of this study is to find out the level of digital competence of Galician university professors, as well as to identify whether there are significant variable-based differences. To this end, a non-experimental design with a descriptive approach and hypothesis contrast is proposed. The sample studied is made up of a total of 610 teachers from the three public universities of Galicia (Spain), who responded to the DigCompEdu Check-In instrument adapted to the Spanish context (Cabero-Almenara & Palacios-Rodríguez, 2020). In general terms, the results show a medium-low level and the existence of significant differences depending on the age, recruitment profile and area of knowledge of the teaching staff. Specifically, the younger teaching and research staff, together with Social and Legal Sciences, have a higher level of competence, whereas tenured teaching and research staff have a lower level of competence with respect to contracted workers. Therefore, training plans should be developed which focus on teaching.

The United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Science highlights a need to improve the way in which scientific results effectively inform action and policies regarding the ocean. Our research contributes to achieving this goal by identifying practical actions, barriers, stakeholder contributions and resources required to increase the sustainability of activities carried out in the context of artisanal fisheries to meet UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA) Global Action Plan (GAP) Pillar targets. We conducted a novel ‘social value chain analysis’ via a participatory workshop to elicit perspectives of value chain actors and fisheries stakeholders associated with two Spanish artisanal common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) fisheries (western Asturias—Marine Stewardship Council [MSC] certified, and Galicia—non-MSC certified) about their priorities regarding sustainable octopus production and commercializationOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Advanced Proteomic and Bioinformatic Tools for Predictive Analysis of Allergens in Novel Foods

    Get PDF
In recent years, novel food is becoming an emerging trend increasingly more demanding in developed countries. Food proteins from vegetables (pulses, legumes, cereals), fungi, bacteria and insects are being researched to introduce them in meat alternatives, beverages, baked products and others. One of the most complex challenges for introducing novel foods on the market is to ensure food safety. New alimentary scenarios drive the detection of novel allergens that need to be identified and quantified with the aim of appropriate labelling. Allergenic reactions are mostly caused by proteins of great abundance in foods, most frequently of small molecular mass, glycosylated, watersoluble and with high stability to proteolysis. The most relevant plant and animal food allergens, such as lipid transfer proteins, profilins, seed storage proteins, lactoglobulins, caseins, tropomyosins and parvalbumins from fruits, vegetables, nuts, milk, eggs, shellfish and fish, have been investigated. New methods for massive screening in search of potential allergens must be developed, particularly concerning protein databases and other online tools. Moreover, several bioinformatic tools based on sequence alignment, motif identification or 3-D structure predictions should be implemented as well. Finally, targeted proteomics will become a powerful technology for the quantification of these hazardous proteins. The ultimate objective is to build an effective and resilient surveillance network with this cutting-edge technology.S

Effectiveness of a universal personalized intervention for the prevention of anxiety disorders: Protocol of a randomized controlled trial (the prevANS project)

    Get PDF
Background: To date, all preventive anxiety disorders interventions are one-fit-all and none of them are based on individual level and risk profile. The aim of this project is to design, develop and evaluate an online personalized intervention based on a risk algorithm for the universal prevention of anxiety disorders in the general population. Methods: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two parallel arms (prevANS vs usual care) and 1-year follow- up including 2000 participants without anxiety disorders from Spain and Portugal will be conducted. The prevANS intervention will be self-guided and can be implemented from the prevANS web or from the participants' Smartphone (through an App). The prevANS intervention will have different intensities depending on the risk level of the population, evaluated from the risk algorithm for anxiety: predictA. Both low and moderate-high risk participants will receive information on their level and profile (risk factors) of anxiety disorders, will have access to stress management tools and psychoeducational information periodically. In addition, participants with a moderate-high risk of anxiety disorders will also have access to cognitive-behavioral training (problem-solving, decision-making, communication skills, and working with thoughts). The control group will not receive any intervention, but they will fill out the same questionnaires as the intervention group. Assessments will be completed at baseline, 6 and 12-month follow-up. The primary outcome is the cumulative incidence of anxiety disorders. Secondary outcomes include depressive and anxiety symptoms, risk probability of anxiety disorders (predictA algorithm) and depression (predictD algorithm), improvement in physical and mental quality of life, and acceptability and satisfaction with the intervention. In addition, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses will also be carried out from two perspectives, societal and health system, and analyses of mediators and moderators will also be performedSpanish Ministry of Health, the Institute of Health Carlos III, co-funded by the European Social Fund “Investing in your future” (grant references: CP19/00056), and the Chronicity, Primary Care and Health Promotion Research Network ‘RICAPPS’ (RD21/0016/0012); and Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the State Investigation Agency (PID2020-119652RA-l00). Explorations in higher-derivative gravity: holography and astrophysics

    No full text
This thesis investigates the role of higher-derivative corrections in the gravity action across various scenarios. The first part focuses on the domain of holography, and in this context we propose a method for holographic renormalization valid for general theories in up to 5 dimensions. Subsequently, we employ the framework of AdS/CFT to examine the effect of cubic-curvature terms in a system known as the holographic superconductor. Besides the curvature tensors, it is possible to construct corrections with contractions of other fields. In particular, we consider theories that are dual to a CFT with a non-minimally coupled chemical potential. Finally, the thesis transitions into the field of astrophysics, and we study the impact of higher-curvature terms in processes of accretion of matter by black holes

Efficacy of a cognitive behavioral intervention for the prevention of depression in nonprofessional caregivers administered through a smartphone app: a randomized controlled trial

    Get PDF
Due to the limited availability of in-person interventions for caregivers, the development of effective programs that use new technologies to prevent depression is needed. The goal of this research was to assess the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral intervention for the prevention of depression, administered to nonprofessional caregivers through a smartphone application (app). One hundred and seventy-five caregivers were randomly assigned to either an app-based cognitive behavioral intervention (CBIA), the CBIA intervention plus a telephone conference call (CBIA + CC), or an attention control group (ACG). At post-intervention, the incidence of depression was lower in the CBIA and CBIA + CC compared to the ACG (1.7% and 0.0% vs. 7.9%, respectively). The absolute risk, relative risk, and number needed to treat compared to the ACG were 6.2%, 21.6%, and 16 for the CBIA, whilst they were 8%, 0.0%, and 13 for the CBIA + CC. Depressive symptomatology was significantly lower in the CBIA and CBIA + CC compared to the ACG (d = 0.84, Cliff’s d = 0.49; d = 1.56, Cliff’s d = 0.72), as well as in the CBIA + CC compared to the CBIA (d = 0.72, Cliff’s d = 0.44). The prevention of depression was more likely in participants who received the CBIA, and adding the conference call in the CBIA + CC group improved the likelihood of thisThis research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Project PSI2016-79041)S

Spanish Twitch streamers: Personal influence in a broadcast model akin to television

    Get PDF
Following the migration of influencers from YouTube to Twitch and the boom in popularity experienced by the latter social network, this paper explores if brands are capitalizing on the influence capacity of streamers or if streamers might be getting money from their own content. In order to investigate this, it was necessary to perform a quantitative analysis on the publication schedules and broadcast formats used by streamers. This facilitated the simultaneous identification of another main finding: Spanish streamers are using a broadcast model on Twitch that resembles that of open linear television. Although they only broadcast content related to video games, trends towards other types of audiovisual content have already been identified. Moreover, it has been found that influential streamers prioritize Twitch over other social networks even though feedback flows have been detected, especially from Twitch to other platforms. This work represents a contribution to knowledge in terms of understanding Twitch and understanding platforms and influencers. It is important to determine whether these new forms of broadcasting and interaction could be considered a hybrid model between linear television and social media streaming. This work was supported by Department of Education, University and Professional Training of the Xunta de Galicia (Spain). Social educator, a necessary professional profile for educational and professional guidance teams?

    Get PDF
In these territories, social educators carry out part of their function in and/or in collaboration with guidance teams, especially in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) centres. The uneven response by the different autonomous educational administrations, in our opinion, calls into question the incorporation of these professionals into all guidance teams, their role and functions, as well as the degree of acceptance or rejection by guidance professionals. In this context of uncertainty regarding the convenience of expanding the teams, we have proposed to know the perceptions of the counselors of public centers of ESO, through a quantitative-descriptive research, in which an ad hoc questionnaire has been applied to a convenience sample of 85 school counselors. The results of the study show two opposing positions in relation to the necessary inclusion of social education in schools, to which we attribute the lack of knowledge of the professional figure of the social educator and the need to clarify their functions in the school contextS
