Language balance rather than age of acquisition: A study on the cross-linguistic gender congruency effect in Portuguese– German bilinguals

    Get PDF
The cross-linguistic gender congruency effect (GCE; a facilitation on gender retrieval for translations of the same gender) is a robust phenomenon analysed almost exclusively with late bilinguals. However, it is important to ascertain whether it is modulated by age of acquisition (AoA) and language proficiency. We asked 64 early and late bilinguals of European Portuguese and German to do a forward and backward translation task. A measure of language balance was calculated through the DIALANG test. Analyses included this factor along with the gender congruency between translations, the target language, and the AoA of both languages, among others. Results showed a GCE for European Portuguese that was independent of the AoA and greater the higher the language imbalance. We propose that changes in proficiency in any of the languages create situations of dependency between them which allow cross-linguistic gender interaction to occur and effects to emerge depending on gender transparencyThis work was funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Portuguese State Budget (UIDP/01662/2020) and the grant UIDB/00305/2020, as well as by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, through the Training program for Academic Staff (Ayudas para la Formación del Profesorado Universitario [FPU16/06983]), and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation [research project PID2019 110583GB-I00]S

Knowledge integration to promote waste-to-PHA biorefineries

    Get PDF
The development of biobased and circular value chains entails multiple opportunities and challenges and involves multiple actors across the value chain with different interests and available knowledge. The PHA value chain based on mixed microbial culture systems could be depicted as a sort of puzzle, whose different pieces are assembled in this thesis by integrating the available knowledge, tools, and methodologies. This thesis assisted the decision-making during the development of this innovative value chain at multiple levels: from solving the local bottlenecks (zoom in) within the anaerobic fermentation and the PHA downstream processing to forecast the development of waste-to-PHA biorefineries and developing a framework (zoom out) that connects stakeholders across the value chain

A new analytical method to determine trace level concentrations of pharmaceuticals in influent wastewater: a tool to monitor human use patterns

    Get PDF
The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in influent wastewater samples (IWW) is a recurrent issue. The monitoring of their presence is not only valuable from an environmental point of view, but also as a tool to analyze patterns of human use by the so-called wastewater-based epidemiology. The development of an analytical method based on solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry to monitor the occurrence of a group of seventeen pharmaceuticals including the most representative for various therapeutic families in IWW samples is described in this work. The samples were collected during a monitoring week in six wastewater treatment plants located in different cities and towns across Spain. The developed method provides acceptable figures of merit with apparent recoveries in IWW ranging from 42% to 139%, and low matrix effect (in general lower than ± 30%), and method quantification limits (MQL) between 1 ng/L and 24 ng/L for all compounds, except atenolol (58 ng/L). All the studied pharmaceuticals were found in all samples with concentrations ranging from < MQL to 10,393 ng/L, being the highest concentrations for tramadol. The population normalized daily loads revealed that the use of pharmaceuticals follows, in general, a similar pattern in all cities monitored. The authors would like to thank the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and the Agencia Estatal de Investigación, MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, for granting the projects PID2020-114587GB-I00, PID2020-117686RB-C32 and PID2020-117686RB-C33, and the Ministerio de Sanidad on account of the Spanish Plan Nacional Sobre Drogas (2020I009) for their financial support. Are self-sacrificing employees liked by their supervisor?

Despite the growing prevalence of employee exemplification in the workplace, there is limited understanding of this assertive self-focused tactic. This study proposes to expand the exemplification research domain by exploring the emotional and behavioral conditions under which this impression management tactic is effective. Data analysis from 206 supervisor employee dyads reveals that the indirect relationship between exemplification and individual performance through a supervisor’s liking is conditional on an employee’s emotional intelligence. Specifically, the exemplification effect on performance is sharply negative when a salesperson’s emotional intelligence is low, and it becomes insignificant when a salesperson is highly emotionally intelligent. This moderating effect is also strengthened by a supervisor’s age. Theoretical and practical implications are discussedOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. No funding was received for conducting this studyS

O asociacionismo no desenvolvemento socioeducativo e cultural do Concello de Vedra. Orixes, actualidade e prospectiva

    No full text

The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the use of remote sensors, the information that can be obtained to determine how these sensors and methodologies can be used to generate and update geospatial information for risk management and governance. To acquire this objective, after an extensive review, it is intended to develop from a purely practical and applied point of view, which are materialized in different case studies. And, applied to projects that are immersed in risk management focused on mass movements in Ecuador. This thesis is conformed of six chapters addressing mass movements from different perspectives objectives and, study areas

    Get PDF
