The objective of this research is to analyze the presence of training in feminist pedagogies in the initial stages of the training of education professionals in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. This entails a review of the subjects taught on university degrees for training teachers, pedagogues and social educators, as well as master’s degrees in secondary education at the three Galician universities. The results reveal a considerable lack of training in this area, with significant differences between the universities that are part of the study, as well as the desire, both of students and teachers, to receive such training. Finally, a series of proposals for improvement are offered and the need for teachers and other practitioners in the field of education to be trained in feminist pedagogies is reiteratedS

Sustainable energy transition and circular economy: the heterogeneity of potential investors in rural community renewable energy projects

    Get PDF
Community renewable energy has been acknowledged as a necessary step in the transition toward a sustainable energy system. It can contribute to the achievement of energy autonomy by communities. In rural settings, it can be a driver of sustainable rural development. And it can be seen as a specific contribution to circular economy from the energy sector. The willingness to invest in community renewable energy has received some attention in previous research but needs further investigation at the local rural scale through quantitative approaches. Based on a survey in a small Galician village, this study contributes to the filling of this gap. The willingness to invest of its inhabitants is analyzed in relation to alternative financial, sociodemographic and sociopsychological features. Survey results show the heterogeneity of individual attitudes and concerns that condition the willingness to invest in rural community renewable energy and the different perceptions of risk and return related to these projects. Cluster analysis allows identifying four different investor profiles (skeptics, financial illiterate, enthusiasts, yield investors). These should be accounted for by project promoters and policymakers when designing incentives and strategies to foster community renewable energy in rural settingsOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Water-Energy-Food nexus index proposal as a sustainability criterion on dairy farms

    Get PDF
Cow milk is a fundamental nutrients source for the human diet at all stages of life. However, the decline in cow milk consumption over the years has been driven by increased consumer awareness of animal welfare and the environmental burdens associated. In this regard, different initiatives have emerged to mitigate the impacts of livestock farming, but many of them without addressing the multi-perspective view of environmental sustainability. Thus, the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus emerges as a framework to consider the complex synergies among carbon emissions, water demand, energy requirements and food production. In this study, a novel and harmonised WEF nexus approach has been proposed and applied to evaluate a set of 100 dairy farms. For that, the assessment, normalisation, and weighting of three lifecycle indicators such as carbon, water and energy footprints, as well as the milk yield were carried out to obtain a single value, the WEF nexus index (WEFni), which varies from 0 to 100. Results show that the WEF nexus scores obtained vary from 31 to 90, demonstrating large differences among the farms assessed. A cluster ranking was performed to identify those farms with the worst WEF nexus indexes. For this group, consisting of 8 farms with an average WEFni of 39, three improvement actions focused on the feeding, digestive process and wellbeing of the cows were applied to determine the potential reduction in the two main hotspots identified: cow feeding and milk production level. The proposed methodology can establish a roadmap for promoting a more environmentally sustainable food industry, although further studies are still required in the pathway of a standardised WEFniThis research was co-funded by CEPES (118.831059.02) and the EAPA_576/2018 NEPTUNUS project, supported by Interreg Atlantic Area. Psychiatric and neurological disorders affect millions of people worldwide. Currently available treatments may help to improve symptoms, but they cannot cure the diseases. Therefore, there is an urgent need for potent and safe therapeutic solutions. 8-Amide and 8-carbamatecoumarins were synthetized and evaluated as human monoamine oxidase A and B (hMAO-A and hMAO-B) inhibitors. Comparison between both scaffolds has been established, and we hypothesized that the introduction of different substituents can modulate hMAO activity and selectivity. N-(7-Hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin-8-yl)-4-methylbenzamide (9) and ethyl N-(7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin-8-yl)carbamate (20) proved to be the most active and selective hMAO-A inhibitors (IC50 = 15.0 nM and IC50 = 22.0 nM, respectively), being compound 9 an irreversible hMAO-A inhibitor twenty-four times more active in vitro than moclobemide, a drug used in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Based on PAMPA assay results, both compounds proved to be good candidates to cross the blood-brain barrier. In addition, these compounds showed non-significant cytotoxicity on neuronal viability assays. Also, the best compound proved to have a t1/2 of 6.84 min, an intrinsic clearance of 195.63 μL min−1 mg−1 protein, and to be chemically stable at pH 3.0, 7.4 and 10.0. Docking studies were performed to better understand the binding affinities and selectivity profiles for both hMAO isoforms. Finally, theoretical drug-like properties calculations corroborate the potential of both scaffolds on the search for new therapeutic solutions for psychiatric disorders as depressionThis research was funded by Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria (EM2014/016), Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2020-116076RJ-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (PTDC/ASP-PES/28397/2017, CEECIND/02423/2018, UIDB/00081/2020, LA/P/0056/2020 and EXPL/BIA-BQM/0492/2021). Progress of social assessment in the framework of bioeconomy under a life cycle perspective

    Get PDF
The bioeconomy is positioned as a sustainable pathway to address the climate crisis and decrease the consumption of fossil resources. Life cycle methodologies are recognised as useful tools for assessing sustainability issues of production and consumption patterns. Nevertheless, the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) methodology is less explored despite its potential, although it is true that social sustainability assessment in promoting bioeconomy strategies requires more attention. This study describes the state of the art of the S-LCA methodology under the bioeconomy framework, critically analysing the main procedural and practical issues of its implementation, and the eventual specificities, as well as providing some of the challenges for future studies. This review highlights methodological weaknesses that require further research, related to the definition of system boundaries and cut-off criteria, the method of impact assessment, and the selection of societal issues and stakeholders, as well as uncertainty, among others. In addition, particularities of the bioeconomy in the life perspective were noted, such as multifunctionality and allocation issues of bio-based products, as well as the strong interest in biofuel production systems. Therefore, more efforts are desirable to address the diversity of challenges towards the progress of the S-LCA method in line with other life cycle approaches (environmental and economic). However, the updated S-LCA Guidelines represent a useful and valuable starting point on the way towards a comprehensive (i.e., diverse social concerns) and standardised social assessment under a life cycle perspectiveThis research has been supported by the project Enhancing diversity in Mediterranean cereal farming systems (CerealMed) project funded by PRIMA Programme and FEDER/Ministry of Science and Innovation–Spanish National Research Agency (PCI2020-111978). Generación de una plataforma de validación funcional y evaluación terapéutica en potenciales biomarcadores de leucemia linfocítica crónica

    Get PDF

Small extracellular vesicle targeting of hypothalamic AMPKα1 promotes weight loss in leptin receptor deficient mice

    Get PDF
Background and aims: Leptin receptor (LEPR) deficiency promotes severe obesity and metabolic disorders. However, the current therapeutic options against this syndrome are scarce. Methods: db/db mice and their wildtypes were systemically treated with neuronal-targeted small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) harboring a plasmid encoding a dominant negative mutant of AMP-activated protein kinase alpha 1 (AMPKα1-DN) driven by steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1) promoter; this approach allowed to modulate AMPK activity, specifically in SF1 cells of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH). Animals were metabolically phenotyped. Results: db/db mice intravenously injected with SF1-AMPKα1-DN loaded sEVs showed a marked feeding-independent weight loss and decreased adiposity, associated with increased sympathetic tone, brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT).Conclusion: Overall, this evidence indicates that specific modulation of hypothalamic AMPK using a sEV-based technology may be a suitable strategy against genetic forms of obesity, such as LEPR deficiencyMinisterio de Ciencia y Universidades co-funded by the FEDER Program of EU (CD: BFU2017-87721; RN: RTI2018-099413-B-I00 and RED2018-102379-T; ML: RTI2018-101840-B-I00, PID2021-128145NB-I00 and PDC2022-133958-I00). “la Caixa” Foundation (ID100010434), under the agreement LCF/PR/HR19/52160022 (ML); EuroNanoMed III (RA & ML: EURONANOMED2019-050-ENAMEP); European Research Council (RN: ERC Synergy Grant-2019-WATCH-810331)S

Socio-economic impacts of the exposure to Roman ceramics in the inland Iron Age communities of the NW Iberian Peninsula: a quantitative approach

    Get PDF
How did the first ever exposure to Roman imported material culture at inland sites affect local material culture practices? What does this reveal about the speed and nature of cross-cultural influence between Roman and Iron Age communities? And about the specific dynamics of integration within the Roman Empire of inland sites? Our ability to address these key questions about the exposure of Iron Age communities to the Roman world is hampered by a research bias in classical archaeology towards the study of ceramics contexts from coastal sites. In this paper we present the first replicable quantified contextualised ceramics data analysis to address these questions, through a study of more than 150,000 sherds from inland sites in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. We conclude that century-long gradual changes in local common wares and amphorae from Iron Age traditions to Roman-inspired forms reflect changing food production and consumption behaviours. This transition is also reflected in an increasing presence of imported Roman goods. Our results suggest very gradual but increasing integration with the Roman world and ceramic data patterns correlate with known events from textual sources: Caesar’s campaign, the Augustan Cantabrian wars, and the Flavian reformsS
