Two-stage partial nitritation (PN) and anammox (AMX) systems showed promising results for applying autotrophic nitrogen removal under mainstream conditions. In this study, a pilot-scale (600 L per reactor) two-stage PN/AMX system was installed in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) provided with a high-rate activated sludge (HRAS) system for organic carbon removal. The PN/AMX system was operated without temperature control (ranging from 11 to 28 °C) and was subjected to the same variations in wastewater characteristics as the WWTP (22 to 63 mg NH4+- N/L). The developed strategy is simple, does not require the addition of chemicals and is characterised by short start-up periods. The PN process was established by applying a high hydraulic load and maintained by in situ accumulated free nitrous acid (FNA) of 0.015–0.2 mg HNO2-N/L. Based on pH value, a controlled aeration strategy was applied to achieve the target nitrite to ammonium ratio in the effluent (1.1 g NO2–-N/g NH4+-N) to feed the AMX reactor. Although NOB were not fully washed out from the system, nitrite accumulation remained (>99 %) stable with no evidence of NOB activity. In the AMX reactor, an overall nitrogen removal efficiency of 80 % was achieved. Regarding effluent quality, 12 ± 3 mg TN/L was obtained, but 5 mg NO3–-N/L was already in the HRAS effluent. The relative abundance of NOB showed a strong negative correlation with the FNA concentration, providing a good strategy for establishing PN under mainstream conditionsThis work has been financed by the European Commission (EU) through the LIFE project ZERO WASTE WATER (LIFE19 ENV/ES/000631), the Waterworks 2014 Cofounded Call (Water JPI/Horizon) through the Pioneer_STP (PCIN-2015-022 MINECO(AEI)/ID 199 (UE)) and by the Spanish Government (AEI) through GRANDSEA (CTM2014-55397-JIN), TREASURE (CTQ2017-83225-C2-1-R) and ECOPOLYVER (PID2020-112550RB-C21 and PID2020-112550RB-C22) projects. Does business commitment to sustainability increase job seekers' perceptions of organisational attractiveness? The role of organisational prestige and cultural masculinity

    Get PDF
This study analyses how recruiting messages showing commitment to sustainability influence job seekers' perceptions of organisational attractiveness. To address a call from prior research, we propose that organisational prestige mediates the positive relationship between commitment to sustainability and attractiveness. As job seekers from different cultures can have different responses to companies' information, the moderating role of the masculinity dimension of national culture is also examined. In a study of 412 job seekers from four different countries, experimental manipulation was used to assess perceptions of different recruiting messages containing information on business sustainability. Results support the proposed relationships. Theoretical and practical contributions include the integration of signalling and social identity theories to considering a wide variety of mechanisms which show how individuals are attracted to organisations and useful information for helping managers to recruit young talent. Using a sample of young part-time job seekers is a limitation of this workS

    Get PDF
Objective: To compare marginal changes at bone- level implants restored with screw- retained implant prosthesis with or without intermediate standardised abutments, after 1 year of follow-up.Materials and Methods: Thirty- six partially edentulous patients received 72 implants. Each patient received 2 implants and a 2- to 4- unit screw- retained implant- prosthesis. The test group received implants consisting of a screw- retained prosthesis connected directly to the implant shoulder, while the prostheses in the control group were con-nected through a 3- mm standardised intermediate abutment. Clinical and radiological data were recorded at baseline and at 3, 6 and 12 months in follow-up visits. Results: At 12 months, the marginal bone loss was 0.17 ± 0.24 mm for the test group (19 patients) and 0.09 ± 0.15 mm for the control group (17 patients), with no statistically significant differences (p> .05). The mean probing pocket depth was 2.96 mm ± 0.46 for the test group and 2.86 ± 0.62 mm for the control group. The test and control groups showed bleeding on probing levels of 18.86 ± 14.12% and 13.73 ± 17.66%, re-spectively. All patients scored below 25% on the plaque index levels. Conclusions: Restoration of bone- level implants with fixed screw- retained partial prostheses with or without intermediate abutments presented similar radiographic and clinical outcomes after 1 yearS

Basic micro-pollutants in sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Northwest Spain:occurrence and risk assessment of sludge disposal

    Get PDF
Sludge is one of the most problematic residues generated during wastewater treatment. Herein, we validate a single-step, sensitive procedure for the determination of a selection of 46 basic micro-pollutants, either used as pharmaceuticals or pesticides, in sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants (STPs), using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry as determination technique. The proposed method permitted to achieve accurate recoveries (values from 70% to 120%, for samples spiked at different concentration levels) using solvent-based calibration standards. This feature, combined with limits of quantification lower than 5 ng g−1 (dry weight), allowed the rapid and sensitive quantification of target compounds in freeze-dried sludge samples. Out of 46 investigated pollutants, 33 species showed detection frequencies above 85% in a group of 48 sludge samples, obtained from 45 STPs located in the Northwest of Spain. The assessment of eco-toxicological risks associated to sludge disposal as fertilizer in agriculture and/or forestry, considering average concentrations found in sludge samples, highlighted eight pollutants (sertraline, venlafaxine, N-desethyl amiodarone, amiodarone, norsertraline, trazodone, amitriptyline and ketoconazole) representing an environmental hazard based on ratios between predicted soil levels and non-effect concentrations estimated using the equilibrium partition methodEconomic support from projects PGC2018-094613-B-I0 and ED431C2021/06 funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and Xunta de Galicia, both co-financed the EU FEDER program, is acknowledged. We thank Indrops laboratories, Aqualia, Espina & Delfin and Agilent Technologies for providing sludge samples and access to the LC-MS/MS instrumentation used in this researchS

Dynamic workload optimisation on NUMA and heterogeneous architectures

    No full text
This thesis faces the challenges of dynamic workload optimisation and workload balancing in two different problems: in conventional systems using heterogeneous (CPU and GPU) parallelism, and in NUMA systems. On one hand, a library named IHP is proposed. Dynamically, CPU and GPU performance are evaluated so computational workload is divided accordingly. Results show that execution times can be improved between 3% and 55% depending on the code and the performance of the computing units. On the other hand, a tool for migrating threads and memory pages in NUMA systems has been developed. This tool incorporates several algorithms that, considering performance measurements, decide whether migrations are required. Experiments show that performance can be improved by up to 47%, particularly in multi-tasking scenarios

Interactions between hosts affect virus competition mechanism within an infectious strain

    Get PDF
Competition of different viruses in a common strain usually results in one variant dominating over all others and eventually suppressing them, following the Principle of Competitive Exclusion. Viruses host in larger animals and they spread to others via the interactions between the hosts. In the present communication, we focus on the role played by the interacting hosts in determining the evolutionary path of a strain. Simple mathematical models are considered to model the evolution of the strain as well as to model the spread of the disease. We observe that the structure of the interactions between hosts influences the evolutionary mechanism as well as the spread of the diseaseWe gratefully acknowledge financial support by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and European Regional Development Fund under contract RTI2018-097063-B-I00 AEI/FEDER, UE, and by Xunta de Galicia under Research Grant No. 2021-PG036. Quorum sensing and oral biofilm: an alternative for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases

    No full text
The present thesis investigates the potential of inhibiting bacterial cell-cell communication, quorum sensing (QS), to modulate oral biofilm formation. The thesis evaluates the effect of a quorum quenching (QQ) enzyme that degrades N-acylhomoserine lactones, the QS signals of gram-negative bacteria, on in vitro polymicrobial oral biofilms. The potential interactions between AHLs and a gram-positive representative, Enterococcus faecalis, were also investigated. The results presented here support the translation of QQ strategies to in vivo trials for the modulation of oral biofilms. In addition, a more intricate role of AHLs on oral biofilm formation and interactions with gram-positive bacteria is proposed.2024-02-1
