    Elemental composition of raw and torrefied pellets made from pine and pine-eucalyptus blends

    Debarked Pinus radiata wood was blended with debarked Eucalyptus nitens wood in three different proportions: 100% pine (100P), 90% pine-10% eucalyptus (90P/10E) and 60% pine-40% eucalyptus (60P/40E). The pellets were torrefied in dry and non-oxidative conditions at different temperatures (210, 240, 270 and 300 °C) and residence times (40 and 60 min) to enhance the energy properties and determine the elemental composition (18 elements). For raw pellets, the concentrations of Na, K, Zn, B and Cl increased significantly with the proportion of eucalyptus wood, with Cl levels being 60% higher in the 60P/40E than in the 100P pellets. The concentrations of most elements (C, Mg, Al, P, Ca, Fe, Cu) tended to increase (+35% for C, +200–250% for the others) with torrefaction severity, independently of the mixture. Decreases in H and O concentrations were also independent of the mixture. Torrefaction decreased the Cl content by 63–77%, which compensated for the high levels in mixtures with eucalyptus. Increases in the high heating value (by as much as 37%) with torrefaction occurred in parallel with an increase in carbon content and a decrease in the atomic H:C and O:C ratios, particularly in the 260 to 300 °C transition. Torrefaction compensated for the negative effect of the inclusion of eucalyptus, with the alkali index remaining at a relatively safe maximum value of 0.10 kg GJ−1This research was partly funded by a Grant from the Competitive Reference Research Unit Program of the Galician Autonomous Government, cofunded by ERDF (ref.     Differences in weight loss and safety between the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists: A non-randomized multicenter study from the titration phase

    Introduction Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Weight loss (≥5 %) reduces the risk of CVD. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1 RA) have shown clinically weight loss. Objectives: 1) To assess differences in the efficacy of weight loss and HbA1c; 2) to evaluate the safety and adherence during the titration phase. Methods It is a multicenter, prospective, and observational study on GLP1 RA naïve patients. The primary end point was the weight loss (≥5 %). Changes in weight, BMI and HbA1c were also calculated as co-primary endpoints. Secondary endpoints were safety, adherence, and tolerance. Results Among 94 subjects, 42.4 % received dulaglutide, 29,3 % subcutaneous semaglutide, 22,8 % oral semaglutide. 45 % female and the mean age was 62. Baseline characteristics were body weight 99.3 kg, BMI 36.7 kg/m2 and Hba1c 8.2 %. Oral semaglutide achieved the highest reduction: 61.1 % of patients achieving ≥ 5 %, subcutaneous semaglutide 45.8 % and dulaglutide 40.6 %. GLP1 RA significantly reduced body weight (−4.95 kg, p < 0.001) and BMI (−1.86 kg/m2, p < 0.001), without significant differences between groups. Gastrointestinal disorders were the most frequently reported events (74.5 %). 62 % of patients on dulaglutide, 25 % on oral semaglutide and 22 % on subcutaneous semaglutide. Conclusions Oral semaglutide achieved the highest proportion of patients that lost ≥ 5 %. GLP1 RA significantly reduced BMI and HbA1c. Most of the reported adverse events were gastrointestinal disorders and they were reported in a major frequency in the dulaglutide group. Oral semaglutide would be a reasonable switch in case of future shortagesS

    Quantity and quality of time devoted to homework in Secondary Education students: an analysis of latent profiles

    The main purpose of this study is to identify different profiles of students based on the daily amount of time they spend completing homework and how they manage it. The aim is to test the various combinations shown by the participants regarding the use and management of the time spent on homework, integrating a person-centred approach, and not taking the variables independently. Once these profiles have been identified, defined, and characterised, possible differences in several variables related to homework, such as intrinsic motivation, interest, perceived usefulness, anxiety, and academic performance are analysed. The sample consists of 578 students (49.5% female and 50.5% male) of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) from 6 schools in Galicia. The age of participants is between 12 and 16 years old. The results have allowed to identify four student profiles: two of them can be defined as the most adaptive and effective (they manage their time better, are more motivated and have less anxiety about homework) and the other two can be categorised as less effective or more maladaptive (they manage their time worse, are less motivated and have more anxiety about homework). These results call for the differential involvement of teachers to effectively address the needs and characteristics of the four profiles identifiedEl principal propósito de este estudio es identificar distintos perfiles de alumnado, definidos en base al tiempo diario que dedican a realizar los deberes escolares y a la gestión que hacen de ese tiempo. Se trata de comprobar las diversas combinaciones que se dan dentro de las y los participantes con respecto al uso y gestión del tiempo dedicado a los deberes, integrando una perspectiva centrada en la persona y no tomando las variables de forma independiente. Una vez identificados, definidos y caracterizados esos perfiles, se analizan las posibles diferencias en motivación intrínseca hacia los deberes, interés por los deberes, percepción de utilidad de los deberes, ansiedad ante los deberes y rendimiento académico. La muestra está integrada por 578 estudiantes (49.5% mujeres y 50.5% hombres) de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) pertenecientes a seis centros educativos de Galicia. La edad de los participantes está comprendida entre los 12 y los 16 años. Los resultados han permitido identificar cuatro perfiles de alumnado: dos de ellos pueden definirse como los más adaptativos y eficaces (gestionan mejor su tiempo, están más motivados y tienen menos ansiedad ante los deberes) y los otros dos se pueden catalogar como menos eficaces o más desadaptativos (gestionan peor el tiempo, están menos motivados y tienen más ansiedad ante los deberes).     Ultrasound-assisted enzymatic indirect determination of total 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters in canned fish oil fraction

    A novel, fast, and cost-effective indirect enzymatic method was successfully developed to assess the total 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) in canned food's oil fraction by the action of Burkholderia cepacia lipase. The total 3-MCPD were derivatized with n-Heptafluorobutyrylimidazole (HFBI) for GC–MS analysis during dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME). An asymmetrical 2213//8 screening design was used to study the influence of critical factors on the method's effectiveness. The analytical features of the proposed method were assessed following Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines using extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as a blank sample. Outstanding results were achieved in terms of linearity (r2 = 0.9995), sensitivity, precision (2.1 % to 10.4 % RSD), and accuracy (98.7 % ≤ recovery ≤ 101.9 %). Method efficacy was tested by comparing the results of 10 edible oils for total 3-MCPD with those reported in previous works. A total of 41 samples were analyzed.     Effect of parent material and atmospheric deposition on the potential pollution of urban soils close to mining areas

To this end, topsoil samples were collected in the public parks and green areas in Minas de Riotinto (a town next to one of the largest open pit mines in the world) and Aracena (a nearby town outside the area of influence of the mine). After determining the concentrations of elements of interest single bondCr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb— the values were compared in terms of the soil location and origin (in-situ or ex-situ), and with the background and regulatory levels for the region. The elemental concentrations in the fine fraction of the soils (particles <50 μm) were also measured. The concentrations of some PTEs (Cu, As and Pb), also found in the dust from nearby mines, were higher in the in-situ soils of Minas de Riotinto than in those of Aracena. The concentrations of PTEs in ex-situ soils of both towns were much lower than in in-situ soils, and similar between the two locations, revealing the influence of the parent material as a primary source of PTEs. However, the concentrations of As and Cu in the ex-situ soils of Minas de Riotinto were significantly higher than in those of Aracena, while a significant increase of these elements in the fine fraction was seen for both in-situ and ex-situ soils. These two elements are directly related to mining activity, implying that atmospheric deposition of dust from the mines contributes to the greater concentration of PTEs in the soils of Minas de Riotinto. Because these sources lead to soils with potentially dangerous concentrations of pollutants, they should be further studied in relation to their long-term influence on human healthS

    Use of vivo-morpholinos for gene knockdown in the postnatal shark retina

    Work in the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula has shown that the evolutionary origin of postnatal neurogenesis in vertebrates is earlier than previously thought. Thus, the catshark can serve as a model of interest to understand postnatal neurogenic processes and their evolution in vertebrates. One of the best characterized neurogenic niches of the catshark CNS is found in the peripheral region of the retina. Unfortunately, the lack of genetic tools in sharks limits the possibilities to deepen in the study of genes involved in the neurogenic process. Here, we report a method for gene knockdown in the juvenile catshark retina based on the use of Vivo-Morpholinos. To establish the method, we designed Vivo-Morpholinos against the proliferation marker PCNA. We first evaluated the possible toxicity of 3 different intraocular administration regimes. After this optimization step, we show that a single intraocular injection of the PCNA Vivo-Morpholino decreases the expression of PCNA in the peripheral retina, which leads to reduced mitotic activity in this region.     Deep Learning Models for Predictive Monitoring of Business Processes

    In this thesis, we enhance predictive monitoring in process mining through the use of advanced deep-learning techniques. By integrating Graph Neural Networks with Recurrent Neural Networks, we learn directly from the process model while also considering event sequences. We introduce two neural models: the first aims to predict the next activity in a business process, while the second forecasts the remaining sequence of activities until the case finishes. For the latter problem, a new Reinforcement Learning model is also proposed to dynamically learn optimal activity selection strategies during training. All models are rigorously validated using real-world event logs under a novel evaluation methodology to facilitate robust and fair comparisons between different predictive monitoring approaches.2024-12-1
