    Objectivity with Objects. A Modal Explanation of the Infinite

    The objectivity of mathematics has been questioned for two reasons: Benacerraf’s challenge and the emergence of several limitation theorems in mathematics. This has led to the search for new explanations of mathematical knowledge and alternatives to universist platonism. Mainly, mathematical knowledge has been reduced to logical knowledge. Against this, this dissertation argues that mathematical knowledge cannot be reduced to logical knowledge. The two best proposals defending this reduction, fictionalism and multiversism, run into serious problems. Both will be challenged to explain how mathematical language acquires its content. Then, it will be argued that they do not satisfy this test. Faced with this problem, an alternative explanation of mathematical language and mathematical knowledge will be developed using abstraction principles. As a result, mathematical knowledge will be explained through linguistic competence. Finally, the proposal will be applied to ZF set theory

    Evolution and trends of the metaverse in business and management: A bibliometric analysis

    The Metaverse is an immersive digital environment that enables users, through avatars, to create worlds, objects, and interact with each other for various purposes. Furthermore, its significance in Business and Management is increasingly evident. The objective of this research is to examine the evolution, trends, and research approaches related to the Metaverse in the field of Business and Management. This study presents a comprehensive contextualization and bibliometric analysis of the existing literature in this area. In the contextualization phase, publications per year, citations received per year, most cited publications, and languages used in publications were examined. These analyses provided an overview of the temporal evolution of research, influential publications, and language diversity in the field of Business and Management. Subsequently, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using Co-citation, Bibliographic coupling, and Co-occurrence of author keywords. These analyses helped identify relationships between scientific works, thematic connections, and collaborations among researchers in the studied field. The use of the Web of Science database ensured the quality and comprehensiveness of the collected data, while the Vosviewer tool facilitated efficient visualization and analysis of the results. The findings of this study provide a detailed understanding of the research landscape in Business and Management, revealing key areas of focus, significant contributions, and existing collaboration networks.     Assessing the future prospects of emerging technologies for shipping and aviation biofuels: A critical review

    There is an urgent need to switch from fossil to bio-based fuels in the transport sector, particularly in shipping and aviation. The growth of the world's population has resulted in a significant impact on passenger transport, with a noticeable increase in greenhouse gas emissions, depletion of fossil resources and associated risks in all three pillars of sustainability. In this context, new policies, standards and targets have been developed to reduce this environmental damage, which is mainly caused by the use of fossil fuels. Therefore, the alternative of using biofuels seems to be the most appropriate solution, to the extent that important targets have been set and specific directives have been developed for the integration of biofuels in the maritime and aviation sectors. However, to demonstrate that switching to biofuels is indeed beneficial, it is necessary to evaluate new biofuel scenarios from a life-cycle perspective, with particular emphasis on analyses that provide information beyond the present, such as prospective life-cycle assessments. To this end, the focus of this review is on the current trends in the production of biofuels for the marine and aviation sectors, taking into account the main targets set, the existing regulations and directives on the subject, and an analysis of the type of technologies used for their production. It also addresses biofuel Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) scenarios and future LCA approaches, and how these analyses should be carried out to be effective. Finally, key policies, standards and certifications are analyzed. The trends and bottlenecks discussed in this review concerning the actual and future development of the biofuels sector could be used by policy makers and stakeholders to identify efforts that favor the integration of biofuels into the value chain. Furthermore, it could be concluded that the evaluation of the guidelines foreseen in the development of competitive scenarios based on emerging technologies, as well as the adoption of policies and restrictions on the use of fuels, are key conditions to establish the roadmap for the widespread implementation of biofuels.This research has been supported by the project Black Liquor to Fuel (BL2F) project funding from European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 884111.     Environmental proteomics as a useful methodology for early-stage detection of stress in anammox engineered systems

    Anammox bacteria are widely applied worldwide for denitrification of urban wastewater. Differently, their application in the case of industrial effluents has been more limited. Those frequently present high loads of contaminants, demanding an individual evaluation of their treatability by anammox technologies. Bioreactors setting up and recovery after contaminants-derived perturbations are slow. Also, toxicity is frequently not acute but cumulative, which causes negative macroscopic effects to appear only after medium or long-term operations. All these particularities lead to relevant economic and time losses. We hypothesized that contaminants cause changes at anammox proteome level before perturbations in the engineered systems are detectable by macroscopic analyses. In this study, we explored the usefulness of short-batch tests combined with environmental proteomics for the early detection of those changes. Copper was used as a model of stressor contaminant, and anammox granules were exposed to increasing copper concentrations including previously reported IC50 values. The proteomic results revealed that specific anammox proteins involved in stress response (bacterioferritin, universal stress protein, or superoxide dismutase) were overexpressed in as short a time as 28 h at the higher copper concentrations. Consequently, EPS production was also increased, as indicated by the alginate export family protein, polysaccharide biosynthesis protein, and sulfotransferase increased expression. The described workflow can be applied to detect early-stage stress biomarkers of the negative effect of other metals, organics, or even changes in physical-chemical parameters such as pH or temperature on anammox-engineered systems.     Research on environmental aspects of retention/release of pollutants in soils and sorbents. What should be next?

    Although studies dealing with adsorption/desorption (and/or retention/release) of pollutants present in environmental compartments is a classical field of research, recent papers are focusing on some weak points of investigations and publications within the area. In addition, an increasing number of works are being published related to new possibilities and alternatives in this kind of research works, many of them in relation to the use of artificial intelligence (AI).     Impacto pronóstico de las lesiones subclínicas en órgano diana en los pacientes del estudio IBERICAN

    La presente investigación se realizó con el objetivo de analizar qué factores de riesgo cardiovascular y variables epidemiológicas se asocian más directamente con la prevalencia e incidencia de lesiones de órgano subclínicas mediadas por hipertensión arterial (LOMH) en el estudio IBERICAN, el cual es un estudio de cohortes prospectivo, multicéntrico, realizado en Atención Primaria (AP), que en la actualidad se encuentra en fase de seguimiento de los pacientes. Tras analizar los resultados obtenidos, concluimos que tanto la prevalencia como la incidencia de LOMH, es mayor en sujetos varones, de mayor edad, con obesidad, HTA y DM. La asociación entre las tres LOMH más frecuentes (PP>60mmHg, albuminuria y FGe 30-59ml/ min) tienen un efecto sinérgico en el desarrollo entre ellas

    Since the beginning of humankind, chemistry has been essential to overcome societal needs and de iciencies. Over the last years, supramolecular materials have shown potential applications in medicine and material science. In this sense, self-assembling cyclic peptide nanotubes stand out as molecular scaffolds since they allow an exquisite bottom-up control over the inal properties. In this work, cyclic peptides functionalized with aromatic moieties are exploited to obtain novel functional materials such as self-healing hydrogels or self-reporting nanosheets. Their characterization demonstrates that functionalization and assembling triggers are key in the hierarchical assembling process. Finally, preliminary studies indicate potential use of these unique materials as cytoskeleton mimicking systems or catalysts.2025-03-0

    Politicisation Persists and Is Increasing in European Public Service Media in the Digital Society

    The open conclusions with which Hallin and Mancini (2004, 2011) approached their comparative study of Western media systems, initiated in 1998, retain their empirical, revisionist, and prospective value—even from critical perspectives—after a quarter of a century of profound historical, social, and technological changes. The names given to the three traditional media models in those authors’ first publication are used in this article to compare the evolution of funding, audience shares, governance, structure, and political intervention in European countries’ public service media on the one hand, and to contrast the operational hypothesis that politicisation persists and is increasing in European public service media in their adaptation to the digital society, on the other hand. Based on the variables from Hallin and Mancini’s empirical model, five crucial questions about the evolution of public service media in the EU are addressed: intervention and development of regulation by states and by the European Commission in the area of shared powers; a comparative analysis of the funding systems and consumer audiences of each European country’s public service media; the changes in the governance and management structures of said public service media; the variation in the professional culture and the rational-legal authority of their organisations; and the evolution and legitimation of public service media’s public value in the internet society, as well as the persistence or mutability of the national media systems’ fit within Hallin and Mancini’s three original models.This article is part of the activities of the research project Public Service Media in the Face of the Platform Ecosystem: Public Value Management and Evaluation Models Relevant for Spain (PID2021–122386OBI00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Spanish State Research Agency, and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).S

    Revisiting modality: a corpus-based study of epistemic adverbs in Galician

    This book presents the first in-depth investigation of modality in Galician linguistics, offering a theoretical discussion of modal categories and a fine-grained description of epistemic adverbs. The first half of the monograph deconstructs the most relevant approaches to modal categories and shows how the traditional concept of modality is a problematic notion, how it relates to other concepts such as evidentiality and mitigation, and how it ought to be conceived of in order to become a more useful instrument for linguistic analysis. A new way of understanding modality is explored and illustrated through Galician examples. The second half of the book zooms in on six epistemic adverbs, which are exhaustively studied from both a formal and a functional perspective. Combining a quantitative and a qualitative perspective, the book shows that adverbs make up a rich semantic scale and establishes several factors that condition their occurrence in discourse, challenging previous conceptions of this grammatical domain.9999-01-0

    La viabilidad celular depende de la capacidad para prevenir y reparar las lesiones en su material genético, sufridas como consecuencia de constantes agresiones genotóxicas. Dentro del amplio abanico de modificaciones que afectan al DNA, las roturas de doble cadena (DSBs) se consideran de las más perniciosas, ya que de no repararse de forma adecuada pueden acarrear la pérdida total o parcial de brazos cromosómicos durante la división celular. La recombinación homóloga (HR) es un mecanismo esencial en la reparación de las DSBs y conlleva la formación de intermediarios de recombinación ramificados (JMs), que deben deshacerse a tiempo para salvaguardar la segregación cromosómica y la viabilidad celular. Para la eliminación de estas JMs, las células hacen uso de varias rutas enzimáticas distintas: la “disolución”, la “resolución”, y una propia de meiosis, la “resolución CO-específica”. Los productos genéticos obtenidos a través de estas vías pueden ser diferentes y son característicos de cada programa de división celular. Así, la mitosis promueve principalmente la formación de productos no entrecruzantes (NCOs) mediante la eliminación de JMs en etapa temprana, evitando así el riesgo de pérdida de heterozigosidad (LOH)
