Skyrme Neutron Stars
The present thesis aims to develop a realistic description of
highly dense nuclear matter and neutron stars within the
Skyrme model. For this purpose, the properties of neutron
stars and the problem of ultra-dense nuclear matter are
introduced.
The main features of the Skyrme model and the previous
attempts to reproduce neutron stars are reviewed to introduce
a physically motivated generalization of the model that yields
remarkable results for the neutron stars observables.
We establish the basis for a consistent description of infinite
nuclear matter at each range of densities and perform the
standard quantization procedure to account for the isospinasymmetric
effects. Finally, we consider the kaon
condensation in the neutron star cores, and we include ρ
mesons as a viable solution to the compression modulus
problem

Presence of gastrointestinal and bronchopulmonary parasites in Cantabrian brown bears
The Cantabrian brown bear (Ursus arctos) population is threatened although in a constant process of recovery during the last 20 years. Since data on the parasitological status of this bear is still limited, the objective of the present study was to assess the diversity and prevalence of parasites in this population. Thus, 111 bear faecal samples were collected in north-western Spain and analysed for estimating the occurrence of gastrointestinal and bronchopulmonary parasites. Samples were processed by flotation in saline and sucrose solution, sedimentation and Baermann-Wetzel techniques. In addition, a commercial immunofluorescent assay was performed for detecting Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. Dicrocoelium dendriticum was the most prevalent parasite (58.6%), followed by Baylisascaris transfuga (43.2%) and nematodes of the Suborder Strongylida (18.9%) and Spirurida (2.7%). Mixed infections were detected in the 41.4% of the samples. The presence of D. dendriticum was significantly highest in bears from the autonomous region of Castile and León as well as in those in which grass or nuts/acorns were the predominant food item. Moreover, the risk of being positive to B. transfuga was significantly higher during autumn–winter, and in those, faecal samples were mainly composed of fleshy fruit. Some of the parasites detected could infect other wildlife and even humans, and therefore, the risk of pathogen transmission deserves further investigation. Since the impact of endoparasites in the health status of bears is poorly understood, the establishment of a disease surveillance protocol is strongly recommended in order to assess the potential risk of these infections for bearsOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.
Assessing The Adoption of EHealth Technology in The Jordan Healthcare System: An Extension of The UTAUT Model
The healthcare industry has been impacted by technological
advancements, leading to the emergence of eHealth.
However, patients are hesitant to embrace medical treatments
through eHealth applications, which has caused a delay in
the worldwide adoption of such applications. This empirical
study aims to develop and validate an eHealth adoption model
that focuses on patients' viewpoints and enables quantitative
survey research. The study identifies strategies to enhance
adoption, including addressing privacy concerns, empowering
patients, promoting social support, ensuring eHealth justice,
and upholding ethical standards. Overall, this study contributes
valuable insights into eHealth adoption, paving the way for
more effective healthcare technologies
Towards stronger tobacco control policies to curb the smoking epidemic in Spain
Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke pose a significant risk to the health of populations. Although this evidence is not new, the commitment of countries to implement laws aimed at controlling consumption and eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke is uneven. Thus, in North America or in Europe, locations like California or Ireland, are pioneers in establishing policies aimed at protecting the population against smoking and secondhand smoke. Identifying measures that have worked would help control this important Public Health problem in other countries that are further behind in tobacco control policies. In Spain, there has been almost 15 years of little political action in legislation oriented to control the tobacco epidemic. If we want to achieve the tobacco endgame, new legislative measures must be implemented. In this paper, we have elucidated tobacco control policies that could be implemented and show how different countries have done soOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment in Moderate to Severe Keratoconus: Refractive, Topographic and Aberrometric Changes
Aim: This study evaluates the topographic and aberrometric changes induced by ICRS in patients with moderate and severe keratoconus and analyzes pre-operative factors affecting the refractive and visual outcomes. Methods: This retrospective, observational, nonrandomized, and single-center case series, included 21 keratoconic eyes of 21 patients implanted with Keraring ICRS (Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), using the manual tunnelization technique and vacuum device. All subjects were examined after 6 months following surgery, including the measurement of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-Corrected Distance Visual Acuity (CDVA), refractive data, pachymetry, corneal topography, and aberrometry. Results: The mean age of 21 patients was 31.14±10.65 years, eleven (52%) were male. Kerarings were successfully implanted in all eyes. After 6-month from implantation, significant increase was found in mean UCVA (P<0.01) and CDVA (P<0.01). There was a statistically significant reduction in refractive cylinder (P<0.01), corneal cylinder (P=0.020), Kmax (P<0.01) and BFS (P=0.02). Statistically significant differences were found in several aberrometric parameters for 6-mm pupil, RMS HOA (P=0.045), oblique astigmatism (P=0.009), vertical coma (P=0.02), and oblique trefoil (P=0.018). Conclusion: Analysis of the visual outcomes after Keraring ICRS implantation showed a significant postoperative corneal flattening with a subsequent increase in UCVA and CDVA. Visual, refractive, topographic and aberrometric parameters remarkably change in the 6-month period after Kerarings implantation. Kerarings in this sample have shown to provide a mild visual rehabilitation between 2 and 3 lines, particularly in more advanced cases. Furthermore, flattening of the anterior segment induced by the surgery might be beneficial for contact lens fitting.S
negativa do galego, consecuencia dunha visión centralista creada desde Castela e difundida a
A investigación realizada baséase nun amplo traballo
Estimating illegal catches in data-poor S-fisheries: Insights from multispecies shellfish poaching in galician small scale fisheries
The opaque nature of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing means that the data on catches are scarce or unreliable, making it difficult to estimate the volume of illegal fishing and the number of individuals who practice it. In this work, we develop the use of quantification methods for IUU fishing in data-poor fisheries and provide estimates for the main shellfish species exploited in S-fisheries in Galicia (NW Spain). To make the estimates, we use a model whose primary input is the Confiscations per unit of policing effort (CPUPE) index, which relates the sanctions imposed for poaching, estimated poaching, and confiscations carried out by the Enforcement Forces. The estimates for the period 2012–2020 are 660.2 t of illegal catches of different species and an average number of 1,766.2 poachers/year. These estimates provide evidence that makes it possible to analyse tendencies in illegal fishing, to establish assessment baselines and to highlight potential improvements in the fight against IUU fishing in small-scale fisheriesS
New strategies for the prevention and treatment of complications associated with diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus has emerged as one of the most prevalent
chronic diseases of the 21st century with serious
complications worsening its progression. This doctoral thesis is
divided into four chapters focused on improving the
treatment of complications associated with diabetes mellitus. In
the first chapter, the subcutaneous administration of
biopharmaceuticals is adressed as an effective and patientpreferred
alternative to intravenous infusions. In the second
chapter, supercritical foaming technology was utilised to
manufacture PLGA implants loaded with dexamethasone and
