La fuga de cerebros regional: cuantificación y estudio de sus causas. Una aplicación al caso de Galicia en el período 2000-2022
Este trabajo analiza la fuga de cerebros en Galicia durante el
período reciente (2000-2022). La primera aportación es el
desarrollo de una metodología para estimar tasas de
emigración internacional por región de origen y nivel de
estudios de los emigrantes. Las estimaciones permiten concluir
que la magnitud de la fuga de cerebros de Galicia difiere entre
una elevada emigración internacional (aunque decreciente) y
una reducida emigración interna (aunque creciente). La escasa
capacidad de atracción explica la presencia de marcados saldos
negativos en el caso interno y un peso demográfico decreciente
en el conjunto español. Los análisis econométricos sobre los
determinantes de la emigración muestran que la aglomeración
de actividades intensivas en conocimiento explica buena parte
de esta dinámica.2025-03-2
Application of a multi-toxin detect method to analyze mycotoxins occurrence in plant-based beverages
In recent years, plant-based beverages have gained popularity on the market due to environmental and ethical concerns, as well as milk intolerances and allergies. However, raw materials employed in the manufacture of these products are susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. For this reason, a new method based on a QuEChERS extraction procedure followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) detection was developed for the analysis of 29 mycotoxins in oat, rice, soy, and almond beverages. The method was validated in terms of linearity, detection and quantification limits, matrix effect, recoveries, accuracy and precision. Satisfactory performance characteristics were achieved, with recoveries above 70% for most mycotoxins. Several commercial samples were analyzed, aflatoxins were frequently detected in rice and almond beverages, while T-2 and HT-2 toxins were identified in oat-based products. Desarrollo del lenguaje en niños de 24 meses muy prematuros y prematuros extremos: impacto de las complicaciones biomédicas
Esta investigación determinó en niños(as) muy prematuros y
prematuros extremos (con menos de 32 semanas de gestación)
el efecto de 5 complicaciones biomédicas, además de factores
biológicos, ambientales y psicológicos sobre el desarrollo
temprano del lenguaje (léxico-sintáctico). Se aplicaron 3
instrumentos de reporte parental a una muestra de 124 niños
prematuros y 42 niños nacidos de término evaluados a los 24
meses de edad. Los resultados evidencian que los niños(as)
prematuros(as) presentan retraso de lenguaje independiente de
la cantidad de complicaciones biomédicas presentes. El Apgar
al minuto, las semanas de gestación y los días de
hospitalización tienen efecto predictor sobre el desarrollo
temprano del lenguaje, no así los ingresos familiares y el nivel
educativo de la madre al momento de la evaluación
Deciphering autism spectrum disorder genomic variation through the characterization of zebrafish and human stem cell-based models
Autism Spectrum Disorders are characterized by behavioural,
social, and communication impairments. Despite their
prevalence, the precise mechanisms underlying ASD are poorly
understood. This thesis is focused on developing suitable
models to study the impact of mutations in three genes (BTBD8,
FOSL2, and TAOK1) potentially associated with ASD. In
vitro models were generated using human iPSCs that were
differentiated into cortical neurons and human brain organoids,
that were characterized through proteomics and scRNA-seq.
Genes of interest were also studied in Danio rerio, to
evaluate the morphological and behavioural consequences of
gene dysfunction. These models will be useful for improving
our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying
ASD, but also for improving the diagnosis and treatment of the

3D printed teeth in endodontics: Why, How, Problems and Future. A new Protocol for Micro-CT studies
3D printed teeth have the potencial to establish a new standard
in endodontic ex vivo studies and endodontic training,
potentially supplanting natural teeth. This thesis aimed to
identify and try to solve problems that 3D printed teeth in
endodontics still present.
The primary aims were (1) to evaluate the impact of support
material of a commercial tooth replica, on the preparation
technique and its potential effects on the volume increase
evaluation using micro-CT scans and, (2) to develop and
validate a protocol for complete removing support material
from 3D printed teeth and assessing its efficacy by comparing
the internal anatomy of a natural tooth with 3D printed teeth
using micro-CT
Vancomycin-loaded methylcellulose aerogel scaffolds for advanced bone tissue engineering
Scaffolds grafting combined with local delivery of antibiotics at the injury site may promote bone regeneration along with prevention of infections. In this work, a processing strategy combining the 3D-printing of polysaccharide-based inks with supercritical (sc)CO2 technology was employed to manufacture drug-loaded, nanostructured, and personalized-to-patient aerogels for the first time. Methylcellulose (MC) was employed as graft matrix endowed with nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) to confer bioactivity as required in bone tissue engineering (BTE). MC-nHA aerogels were obtained through the 3D-printing of hydrogel-based scaffolds followed by scCO2 drying. Aerogels were loaded with vancomycin (VAN), an antibiotic employed in the management of bone infections. Textural properties and printing fidelity of scaffolds were studied as well as VAN release, long-term bioactivity, and pre-osteoblasts mineralization. In vitro cell studies and in vivo Artemia salina tests were carried out to evaluate the potential toxicity of the antibiotic-loaded aerogels. Aerogels efficacy in inhibiting bacterial growth was assessed by antimicrobial tests with Staphylococcus aureus. Textural stability of the aerogels after 7 months of storage was also evaluated. Enseñanza y aprendizaje de las matemáticas en una educación inclusiva: diseño de un programa de intervención para alumnado en riesgo de exclusión social
La realidad educativa actual reclama la creación de nuevos escenarios
que se adecúen a la diversidad del alumnado bajo los principios de una
educación inclusiva. En el caso particular de las matemáticas, su
enseñanza ha ido evolucionado históricamente, aunque sigue siendo
unas de las disciplinas con mayor fracaso escolar, específicamente entre
los estudiantes en situación de riesgo de exclusión social. En esta tesis
se presenta el análisis de la idoneidad didáctica de un programa de
estímulo matemático basado en actividades STEAM (Science,
Techonology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) dirigido a alumnado
en riesgo de exclusión social
Generación de un repositorio de datos de genotipado de muestras de población control española y diseño de un nuevo array para estudios de GWAS
La finalización del Proyecto Genoma Humano en 2003 y el Proyecto
Internacional HapMap en 2005, ha supuesto la generación de nuevas
herramientas de investigación que permiten analizar las contribuciones
genéticas a enfermedades complejas. Una de las posibles complicaciones
de los estudios de asociación es la existencia de estratificación,
diferencias genético-poblacionales entre casos y controles que pueden
sesgar la interpretación de los resultados. En esta tesis se ha diseñado un
array específico de población española y se ha generado un repositorio de
datos de genotipado de muestras de población control española que se
harán accesibles a la comunidad científica para sus estudios de asociación
