Conceptual design, operation and scale-up of photocatalytic processes integrating magnetic nanocomposites for the removal of micropollutants in wastewater
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have demonstrated
being one of the most efficient processes for micropollutants
abatement from water and soil systems. Although these
processes have been implemented at full scale, fundamentally
ozone and UV radiation, it is needed to reduce the energy
consumption linked to ozone production and light sources to
ensure the economic viability of technologies. The aim of this
thesis is the development and optimization of an innovative
technology based on advanced oxidation systems that employ
nanoparticles for the removal of micropollutants in wastewater.
In this regard, several reactor con igurations and operational
conditions have been studied under different types of light

New supramolecular concepts for the development of functional systems in cells and protocells
In this manuscript, we have approached the development of
new functional supramolecular systems from a chemical
perspective and with the objective to modify or replicate
cellular functions. The main driving force and link between the
systems developed during this PhD work is the dynamic
character of stimuli-responsiveness, which is crucial for their
specific functional behaviour. The novel functional systems
development focused on a protofilament cytoskeleton-mimetic
system, a new ratiometric fluorescent SNARF probe with pH
range sensitivity optimized and a pH sensitive antitumoral
analogue of a natural venom.2025-01-1
Combined DFT and Kinetic Monte Carlo Study of UiO-66 Catalysts for γ-Valerolactone Production
Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent heterogeneous porous catalysts due to their thermal stability. Their tunability via node and linker modifications makes them amenable for theoretical studies on catalyst design. However, detailed benchmarks on MOF-based reaction mechanisms combined with kinetics analysis are still scarce. Thus, we here evaluate different computational models and density functional theory (DFT) methods followed by kinetic Monte Carlo studies for a case reaction relevant in biomass upgrading, i.e., the conversion of methyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone catalyzed by UiO-66. We show the impact of cluster versus periodic models, the importance of the DF of choice, and the direct comparison to experimental data via simulated kinetics data. Cálculo preoperatorio del volumen de injerto necesario en cirugía de elevación de seno maxilar
En aquellos casos en los que la disponibilidad ósea se
encuentra limitada a nivel de los sectores posteriores del
maxilar superior, la utilización de las diferentes técnicas de
elevación de seno maxilar nos permite lograr un volumen óseo
adecuado para la posterior rehabilitación mediante implantes
osteointegrados.
En el presente trabajo de investigación, mediante el empleo de
imágenes CBCT y el software ITK-SNAP, hemos estudiado el
volumen total de los senos maxilares, así como el cálculo
preoperatorio del volumen de injerto necesario para la
realización de una cirugía de elevación de seno maxilar y la
posterior rehabilitación mediante la inserción de implantes
dentales osteointegrados de 12 mm de longitud.

Oleogels for the ocular delivery of epalrestat: formulation, in vitro, in ovo, ex vivo and in vivo evaluation
The ocular administration of lipophilic and labile drugs such as epalrestat, an aldose reductase inhibitor with potential for diabetic retinopathy treatment, demands the development of topical delivery systems capable of providing sufficient ocular bioavailability. The aim of this work was to develop non-aqueous oleogels based on soybean oil and gelators from natural and sustainable sources (ethyl cellulose, beeswax and cocoa butter) and to assess their reproducibility, safety and efficiency in epalrestat release and permeation both ex vivo and in vivo. Binary combinations of gelators at 10% w/w resulted in solid oleogels (oleorods), while single gelator oleogels at 5% w/w remained liquid at room temperature, with most of the oleogels displaying shear thinning behavior. The oleorods released up to 4 µg epalrestat per mg of oleorod in a sustained or burst pattern depending on the gelator (approx. 10% dose in 24 h). The HET-CAM assay indicated that oleogel formulations did not induce ocular irritation and were safe for topical ocular administration. Corneal and scleral ex vivo assays evidenced the permeation of epalrestat from the oleorods up to 4 and 2.5 µg/cm2 after six hours, respectively. Finally, the capacity of the developed oleogels to sustain release and provide significant amounts of epalrestat to the ocular tissues was demonstrated in vivo against aqueous-based niosomes and micelles formulations loaded with the same drug concentration. Overall, the gathered information provides valuable insights into the development of oleogels for ocular drug delivery, emphasizing their safety and controlled release capabilities, which have implications for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and other ocular conditions.This research was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (grant agreement-No 813440). Object oriented inference methods
Object oriented data analysis (OODA) can be defined as the
statistical analysis of complex objects. This term comprises any
situation where classical inferential techniques are not directly
applicable, either because the population of study is supported
on a manifold different from the Euclidean space, or because its
characteristic of interest has an overly complex structure that
usual statistic techniques cannot manage. This doctoral thesis
addresses three problems included in the OODA framework:
assessing the number of modes of a circular variable,
estimating high density regions for data on manifolds, and
developing locally optimal inference techniques for noisy
directional data

En diciembre de 2019 el Comité Intergubernamental para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, reunido en Bogotá, materializó un proyecto que había comenzado siete años antes. Desde ese momento, los procesos artesanales de la cerámica de Talavera de la Reina y El Puente del Arzobispo, situados al oeste de la provincia de Toledo (España), fueron incluidos en la Lista Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad. La UNESCO localizaba, sin embargo, la cerámica de Talavera, en un mapa mundial, a ambos lados del Atlántico y, junto a estos dos centros productivos en Europa, también aparecían los estados de Tlaxcala y Puebla, en el altiplano mexicano. Una técnica artesanal alcanzaba así, el máximo reconocimiento internacional a través de su proyección sobre cuatro territorios diferenciados, pero con una historia entreverada. El presente texto pretende mapear, en perspectiva antropológica, el decurso histórico de la cerámica de Talavera hasta alcanzar la meta de engrosar la lista del patrimonio que ha de ser salvaguardado para el futuro.In December 2019, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, meeting in Bogota, materialized a project that had begun seven years earlier. From that moment on, the ceramic craft processes of Talavera de la Reina and El Puente del Arzobispo, located in Western Toledo (Spain), were included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO, however, located Talavera ceramics on a world map on both sides of the Atlantic and, together with these two production centers in Europe, the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla, in the Mexican highlands, also appeared. A craft technique thus achieved maximum international recognition through its ramifications over four different territories but with an interwoven history. The present text intends to map, from an anthropological perspective, the historical course of Talavera ceramics until it reaches the goal of adding it to the list of heritage to be safeguarded for the future.S
Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccination Recommendations for Adults Aged 60 Years and Older: The NeumoExperts Prevention Group Position Paper
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of respiratory tract infections in adults, particularly older adults and those with underlying medical conditions. Vaccination has emerged as a potential key strategy to prevent RSV-related morbidity and mortality. This Neumoexperts Prevention (NEP) Group scientific paper aims to provide an evidence-based positioning and RSV vaccination recommendations for adult patients. We review the current literature on RSV burden and vaccine development and availability, emphasising the importance of vaccination in the adult population. According to our interpretation of the data, RSV vaccines should be part of the adult immunisation programme, and an age-based strategy should be preferred over targeting high-risk groups. The effectiveness and efficiency of this practice will depend on the duration of protection and the need for annual or more spaced doses.
