Evaluating the performance of carbon-based adsorbents fabricated from renewable biomass precursors for post-combustion CO2 capture

    Get PDF
The significant increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration originated mainly from fossil fuels combustion has encouraged the development and improvement of CO2 separation operations to reduce emissions and control climate change and global warming. Therefore, this work is focused on the separation of CO2 from N2 in flue gas streams under post-combustion conditions by developing low-cost adsorbents. Six carbons were fabricated from biomass resources (olive stones and almond shells) to assess their influence on CO2 adsorption capacity: One carbonized and two KOH-activated carbons with carbon/KOH ratio of 1:2 and 1:4 (w/w) for each precursor. The carbons were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis, nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption–desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and point of zero charge determination. In addition, the equilibrium adsorption data of pure components for all adsorbents were measured at 0, 25 and 50 °C between 0 and 760 mmHg and CO2/N2 selectivity was determined. Activated carbons were found to have higher CO2 adsorption capacity but with a reduction in apparent selectivity. Dynamic binary adsorption simulations performed in a fixed-bed column demonstrated that the activated carbon produced from olive stones with a carbon/KOH ratio of 1:4 (w/w) can separate a mixture of 14 % CO2 and 86 % N2 at 25 and 50 °C with the highest selectivity, CO2 adsorption capacity, CO2 purity and N2 recovery factor. Reducing flow rate, the breakthrough time increased. Moreover, the breakthrough time was reduced by increasing the temperature from 25 to 50 °C owing to the exothermic nature of adsorption process. This work is part of I+D+i project Reference PID2021-122923NB-I00 financed by MCIN/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, UE. Goodness-of-fit test for point processes first-order intensity

    Get PDF
Modelling the first-order intensity function is one of the main aims in point process theory. An appropriate model describes the first-order intensity as a nonparametric function of spatial covariates. A formal testing procedure is presented to assess the goodness-of-fit of this model, assuming an inhomogeneous Poisson point process. The test is based on a quadratic distance between two kernel intensity estimators. The asymptotic normality of the test statistic is proved and a bootstrap procedure to approximate its distribution is suggested. The proposal is illustrated with two applications to real data sets, and an extensive simulation study to evaluate its finite-sample performance. The authors are grateful for the very constructive comments from the three anonymous reviewers and Associate Editor which helped to improve this manuscript. Exploring soccer transfers in Spanish League– The hidden role of strategic differences among teams

    Get PDF
Transfers in the football world have become a hot topic in academic studies in recent years. Spanish league (La Liga) is one of the men’s professional football leagues that have driven some of the most notorious transfers. In this way, we test determinants for the transfer relationships of football players in the Spanish League in the most expensive seasons with records (2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons). Furthermore, we identify determinants for the values of the observed transfers. The empirical analysis shows relevant findings. We recognize two implications. First, Spanish soccer transfers are not random and this evidence reflects the environment of imperfect competition characterizing La Liga. Second, the nonrandomness of the transfer process can be associated with an increasing inequality among teams and with a threat to the competitive balance in professional sports. The author(s) received no specific funding for this work. The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.S

    Get PDF

Topology of the space of conormal distributions

Given a closed manifold MM and a closed regular submanifold LL, consider the corresponding locally convex space I=I(M,L)I=I(M,L) of conormal distributions, with its natural topology, and the strong dual I=I(M,L)=I(M,L;Ω)I'=I'(M,L)=I(M,L;\Omega)' of the space of conormal densities. It is shown that II is a barreled, ultrabornological, webbed, Montel, acyclic LF-space, and II' is a complete Montel space, which is a projective limit of bornological barreled spaces. In the case of codimension one, similar properties and additional descriptions are proved for the subspace KIK\subset I of conormal distributions supported in LL and for its strong dual KK'. We construct a locally convex Hausdoff space JJ and a continuous linear map IJI\to J such that the sequence 0KIJ00\to K\to I\to J\to 0 as well as the transpose sequence 0JIK00\to J'\to I'\to K'\to 0 are short exact sequences in the category of continuous linear maps between locally convex spaces. Finally, it is shown that II=C(M)I\cap I'=C^\infty(M) in the space of distributions. In another publication, these results are applied to prove a Lefschetz trace formula for a simple foliated flow ϕ={ϕt}\phi=\{\phi^t\} on a compact foliated manifold (M,F)(M,\mathcal F). It describes a Lefschetz distribution Ldis(ϕ)L_{\text{\rm dis}}(\phi) defined by the induced action ϕ={ϕt}\phi^*=\{\phi^{t\,*}\} on the reduced cohomologies HˉI(F)\bar H^\bullet I(\mathcal F) and HˉI(F)\bar H^\bullet I'(\mathcal F) of the complexes of leafwise currents that are conormal and dual-conormal at the leaves preserved by ϕ\phi.AEI/FEDER, e Xunta de Galicia/FEDER.S

Licensing of a new technology by an outside and uninformed licensor

    Get PDF
We examine the licensing decision of a non-producer innovator with a new technology that enables the manufacture of a saleable product. The technology is licensed and each user privately knows its innovation-related production cost, whereas the licensor only knows, with a certain probability, that this cost may be low (the user is efficient) or high (the user is inefficient). When a single licence is granted through separating contracts, only the contract intended for the inefficient user involves a per-unit royalty, but when two licences are granted through separating contracts, the contracts intended for the inefficient and efficient users both feature a per-unit royalty. However, screening is less likely as the number of licences increases, to the point that the licensor does not screen users when granting three licences. Additionally, whereas the diffusion of the innovation is socially insufficient under symmetric information, with asymmetric information it may be socially optimal. Finally, when licensing with contracts involving an ad-valorem royalty is also feasible the licensor finds it less attractive than licensing with a per-unit royaltyOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.

    Get PDF

Assessing conflict of interest reporting and quality of clinical trials on infant formula: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Objectives: This study aims to assess the quality, risk of bias, and conflicts of interest (COIs) of clinical trials conducted on the effects of fortified infant formula. Study Design and Settting: Systematic review including all randomized clinical trials targeting healthy children and using three arms: fortified infant formula; standard formula; and breastfeeding. We performed a descriptive analysis of the studies reviewed, assessed their quality using the “Risk of Bias 2- RoB 2” tool, and identified COIs. Results: A total of 40 studies were included. All showed a high overall risk of bias, with this being especially noteworthy in the “deviations from intention to treat” and “missing outcome data” domains. Of the total included studies, 29 reported conclusions in favor of the fortified formula; 15 studies reported multiple conclusions that were either contradictory or not in line with the results. COIs with industry were identified in 33 studies, and in 17 studies, these conflicts were not declared in the appropriate section. Conclusion: From a methodological perspective, studies on fortified infant formula display low quality, made evident by the high risk of bias. Additionally, there are frequent COIs. These aspects must be considered by health professionals and the population when drawing up recommendations for the use of this productS

    Get PDF
