Mood alternation with adverbs of uncertainty in Galician: a multifactorial analysis

    Get PDF
This study investigates the factors that significantly constrain mood selection in Galician within uncertainty adverb constructions, applying a logistic regression model. This analysis identified several significant factors affecting the choice between the indicative and subjunctive moods, including the temporal context of the clause, the preceding adverb, and the interaction of fictional and nonfictional registers with the verb type of the predicate and the gender of the speaker/writer. Time reference and the preceding adverb emerged as primary factors conditioning mood choice, with present and future time frames and adverbs encoding weaker epistemic values significantly predisposing toward the subjunctive mood. This study also highlighted the influence of the gender of the speaker/writer, demonstrating the preference of women toward the indicative mood in fictional texts. Verb type and register interact in complex ways that only partially align with previous findings. The results of the present study contribute to a deeper understanding of syntactic variation in Galician, adding to a growing body of quantitative research on Galician grammar.S

Search for violation of leptonic universality in semileptonic decays of strange particles in LHCb

    No full text
Theoretical studies have demonstrated that Semileptonic Hyperon Decays (SHD) can be sensitive to Beyond the Standard Model dynamics that break leptonic flavour universality (LFU). The LFU test observable defined as the ratio between muon and electron modes is sensitive to non standard scalar and tensor contributions. Moreover there is a precise SM theoretical prediction. Λ -> p μ ν was proposed as one of the most promising SHD to be studied at LHCb, due to its high acceptance efficiency and abundance in LHCb events. In addition, the electron mode has already been measured precisely and an improvement in the measurement of the BR directly translates into tighter bounds in LFU in s-u quark transitions. In this thesis is presented the blinded measurement of the branching fraction and its consequences

Ethical-environmental urgency: eco-animalist pedagogies and training of education professionals

    Get PDF
Finalmente, se reitera la necesidad de promover las pedagogías ecoanimalistas en la formación del profesorado y demás profesionales del ámbito educativoAnthropocentrism, the lack of animal ethics and the current planetary situation require the implementation of urgent measures to face the problems that attack society. It is considered that in the face of such arduous situations, education is the most effective path, and therefore, the need to implement eco-animalist pedagogies in the training of education professionals is raised, to provide a solution to these situations. The objective of this research is to analyze the presence of training in eco-animalist pedagogies in the initial and permanent training plans of teachers and other education professionals in Galicia. For this, the subjects taught in the university degrees for the training of teachers, pedagogues and social educators have been reviewed, in addition to the university master's degrees that enable secondary education teachers in the three Galician universities. The results show a total absence of content linked to eco-animalist pedagogies and a lack of training in relation to environmental education, more present in educational programs, but insufficient. Finally, the need to promote eco-animalist pedagogies in the training of teachers and other professionals in the educational field is reiteratedS

Misuse of Linear Regression Technique in Analytical Chemistry?

    Get PDF
Nowadays, frontiers among different sciences are revealed as diffuse, and as a consequence, research must necessarily be faced from an interdisciplinary approach. Similarly, teaching certain topics in Chemistry requires the consideration of developments in other sciences (Mathematics, Biology, Physics, etc.). For instance, the estimation of the parameters of calibration lines in Analytical Chemistry (via linear regression) exemplifies this mandatory interaction since the comprehension of the regression tools should also consider how estimation is regarded from a statistical perspective. This work focuses on how to overcome the contradictions that undergraduate Chemistry students may encounter between the chemists’ and statisticians’ perspectives, when they are lectured on least-squares linear regression. A mixed analytical chemistry−statistics approach is proposed to present a method to get over the discordant issues between both scientific viewpoints. This work is a consequence of the questions formulated three years ago by our undergraduate Chemistry student Ms. Lourdes Patricia Sanmiguel Vázquez, whose inspiring interest is gratefully thanked. In the context of a growing increase in the migrant population in Chile, we analyze the uneven distribution and problematic incorporation of these students in schools of Santiago, where the segregation reaches its greatest magnitude. Through a mixed methods analysis –quantitative, geographical and qualitative– we present a picture of the school concentration in “Greater Santiago” calculated through indicators of segregation, and a discursive analysis of heads of high-concentration schools (CAC) about the reasons for this concentration. Finally, we compare the results with a similar case study carried out in Spain. The results point, firstly, to very high and heterogeneous levels of segregation in the Chilean capital; secondly, to an unequal location of schools in the territory, which draws and reproduces unequal levels of school concentration by district; thirdly, there are CACs in charge of the schooling of migrant students that reproduce dynamics of institutionalized school concentration. The discussion of comparative results suggests differences in the conception of school concentration, more standardized, functional and accepted in the Chilean case, probably as a result of more deeply rooted educational market logics.Este trabajo procede de la Tesis Doctoral que recibió el Premio Enrique Fuentes Quintana de Funcas – Categoría de Ciencias Políticas, Sociología y Comunicación – Convocatoria 2020-2021. Emotional competence profile in secondary school counselors: controversy or need?

    Get PDF
It is out of doubt that little attention is paid to the emotional competences of secondary school counselors in research activity, as well as in their initial and ongoing training. It seems that emotional well-being is still a pending issue that may even generate some controversy, even though, today, it is defined as a clear strategy in mental health plans. Undoubtedly, we are facing a content that facilitates the contrast of points of view and social commitment as an inherent part of the democratic process. Therefore, it was decided to carry out a study, of enormous relevance, with the purpose of knowing the perceptions of secondary school counselors within the Autonomous Community of Galicia regarding emotional competences for an ideal counseling practice in complex times and moments with great challenges in the field of educational equity. Specifically, an evaluation study was carried out on the level of training received by school counselors in emotional competences and thus be able to have a diagnosis, identifying possible strengths and weaknesses. A study with a quantitative based methodology which uses the questionnaire for data collection as a main research technique. The findings obtained suggest that the quality of the teaching and learning processes in secondary schools would be substantially improved if the emotional competence profile of the counselors was considered. In particular, the interest that emotional competences arouse in counselors is confirmed, at the same time, they recognize that they can help them properly to manage the relationship processes and, the personal balance. This research, one of the first carried out in Galicia on emotional competences in secondary school counselors, provides empirical data of great interest for future training plans that are more in line with social and professional expectations, since it provides an x-ray unique, revealing, valid and real statement of the state of the matter.S

Water and waste management strategies as drivers of the financial performance of food companies

    Get PDF
Environmental degradation and resource overuse can affect business operations. Sustainable development is therefore a global economic priority. Food companies must develop strategies to ensure food security and seek business models to provide economic, social, and environmental benefits. This paper presents the combinations of water and waste management practices (water efficiency targets, water consumption ratio, water intensity ratio, waste recycling ratio, and waste intensity ratio) that lead to an overvaluation of food companies in the stock market (Tobin's Q > 1). These combinations of practices were identified using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) of a global sample of 61 listed companies from the food production sector. No necessary conditions were found for the outcome of a Tobin's Q >1. In contrast, the sufficiency analysis revealed five sufficient configurations for overvaluation. The presence of significant recycling and waste reuse performance and the absence of a strong intensity of water withdrawal and waste production are key conditions to achieve the presence of the outcome. The findings provide useful insights for managers, who can focus their business strategies on sustainable and efficient water and waste management to support high financial performance. The findings can also help investors in their decision making.S

Adaptation and Validation of the Hooked on Nicotine Checklist (HONC) with Spanish Adolescents

    Get PDF
Introduction The expansion of new tobacco consumption formats and electronic vapor products threatens to reverse the trend of declining smoking rates that had been observed among younger people in recent decades. Early detection in the health sector requires screening tools that have been adapted and validated in our context. This study aims to translate, culturally adapt, pilot and empirically validate the Hooked on Nicotine Checklist (HONC) with Spanish adolescents. Methods The process of translation and cultural adaptation included the following stages: direct translation, synthesis of translations, back translation, consolidation with a committee of experts and pre-test, along with a cognitive interview, which served as pilot testing. Empirical validation was conducted with a sample of 1027 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 (M = 15.40; SD = 1.638). Results The results obtained confirm that the HONC is a brief, clear and easy-to-understand tool, with appropriate psychometric properties. A Cronbach's alpha value of 0.90 was obtained. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV indices reached values of 0.56, 0.94, 0.79 and 0.83, respectively. Cut-off point 1 is the one reaching the best balance between the two values. CFA showed a model good overall fit. Conclusion This study makes the Spanish version of the HONC available to researchers and clinicians, so that it can be used with sufficient psychometric guarantees.S
