    A political-philosophical reading on justification, recognition and redistribution

    En los debates actuales de la teoría crítica, en particular los que tratan sobre reconocimiento y justicia, se deja constancia de varios problemas de envergadura de las sociedades liberales, expuestos en las tesis que opusieron hace dos décadas a Nancy Fraser y Axel Honneth. La formulación de la cuestión de la justicia a partir de sus respectivas perspectivas, influye en el debate actual en comentarios y objeciones que aparecen en Forst y en Renault. El trabajo expone el debate de cara a los problemas políticos actuales y el lugar de los movimientos sociales en contra de la desigualdad. La proyección actual de este debate, la encontramos en la tercera vía (First Things First) propuesta por Forst en vistas a resolver las principales dificultades que se plantearían en una visión bidimensional o monista, y que ayuda a replantear la teoría crítica de la justicia, permitiendo dar cuenta de complejos procesos económicos, culturales y políticos de las sociedades capitalistas actuales en tiempos globales.In the current debates of critical theory, in particular those that deal with recognition and justice, several serious problems of liberal societies are recorded, exposed in the theses that two decades ago opposed Nancy Fraser and Axel Honneth. The formulation of the question of justice from their respective perspectives influences the current debate in comments and objections that appear in Forst and Renault. The work exposes the debate in the face of current political problems and the place of social movements against inequality. The current projection of this debate is found in the third way (First Things First) proposed by Forst with a view to resolving the main difficulties that would arise in a two-dimensional or monistic vision, and which helps to rethink the critical theory of justice, allowing to account for complex economic, cultural and political processes of current capitalist societies in global times

    Effect of intermolecular interactions on the glass transition temperature of chemically modified alternating polyketones

    Thermal properties of polymers depend on the chemical structure of the polymer chain and intermolecular forces arising from hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking. Here we analyzed the effect of increasing the amount of supramolecular interactions on the glass transition temperature of polyketones by chemically modifying the same polymer backbone with five amine derivatives, namely (1-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole, 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid, 6-aminohexanoic acid, benzylamine or hexylamine, at various molar concentrations. The grafting was performed via the Paal-Knorr reaction and the interactions between the pyrrole backbone and different grafted functional groups were elucidated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry and computational modeling. The modification of polyketone with 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid and 6-aminohexanoic acid, allowed for new possibilities of hydrogen bonding and led to a significant increase in the glass transition temperature as compared to the neat polymer and pyrrole-containing polymers that did not bear reactive side groups. In contrast, modification with the imidazole derivative was found to introduce new and more robust CHMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS pi interactions between imidazole groups and the pi-system of the pyrrole backbone chain, based on electrostatic effects. Both types of supramolecular interactions affect the mobility of the backbone chains and this systematic study demonstrates how the combined effect of pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding to carboxylate moieties can be used to tune the molecular mobility and phase transition temperature of these chemically modified polyketones

    The Role of Performance in Smart Meter's Acceptance: A Survey in Joinville, Brazil

    The incorporation of renewable energy sources necessitates the upgrade of the electrical grid to a smart grid, which involves the implementation of smart meters. Although smart meters provide benefits to users, many smart meter implementation projects have failed to be accepted by users. This article assesses the factors influencing the acceptance of household smart meters in Joinville, a city in the south of Brazil. Based on the Unified and Extended Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2), a structural equation model was estimated using data from a sample of 136 respondents in the city of Joinville. The results indicate that Performance Expectancy, Hedonic Motivation, and Social Influence constructs have a more substantial effect on the Intention to Use smart meters. The results provide evidence for planning the upgrade of the electrical grid by implementing smart meters in southern Brazil

    Scale Mixture of Exponential Distribution with an Application

    This article presents an extended distribution that builds upon the exponential distribution. This extension is based on a scale mixture between the exponential and beta distributions. By utilizing this approach, we obtain a distribution that offers increased flexibility in terms of the kurtosis coefficient. We explore the general density, properties, moments, asymmetry, and kurtosis coefficients of this distribution. Statistical inference is performed using both the moments and maximum likelihood methods. To show the performance of this new model, it is applied to a real dataset with atypical observations. The results indicate that the new model outperforms two other extensions of the exponential distribution

    Beyond the lognormal distribution with properties and applications

    In this paper, a new family of continuous random variables with positive support is introduced. Its density function has the capacity to incorporate features of unimodality and bimodality. Special attention is paid to the lognormal distribution which is included as a particular case. Its density function is given in closed-form, allowing probabilities, moments and other related measures such as skewness and kurtosis coefficients to be computed easily. In addition, a stochastic representation of the family that enables us to generate random variates of this model is also presented. Some properties related with the right tail and actuarial aspects of the distribution are also shown. This new family of distributions is numerically illustrated with data taken from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), conducted by the US Agency of Health Research and Quality and with a well-known data set which has been studied widely in the actuarial literature

    Association between Metabolic Syndrome and Risk of Hearing Loss: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Introduction: Various studies have linked lifestyle and metabolic diseases to hearing loss. Research on metabolic syndrome has reported a higher prevalence of hearing loss in individuals with it than those without it. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis summarizing the risk of hearing loss in people diagnosed with metabolic syndrome or diseases versus those without metabolic syndrome. Methods. Following the PRISMA recommendations for systematic review and meta-analysis, searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and SciELO. Only cross-sectional studies associate hearing loss with obesity, hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and Hyperglycemia. The odds ratios (OR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the studies were pooled in a random effects model using the Mantel-Haenszel method. Using Rev Manager 5.1, OR heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 and Q statistics. Results. Twenty-eight observational studies were included in the quantitative analysis. The OR for prevalent hearing loss was 1.27 (95% CI 1.07, 1.51) in obesity, 1.97 (95% CI 1.51, 2.57) in diabetes, 1.53 (95% CI 1.31, 1.79) in hypertension, and 4.22 (95% CI 1.74, 10.20) for metabolic syndrome. Conclusions. The findings suggest that both metabolic syndrome and some diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, could be associated with the risk of hearing loss, and control of these diseases could reduce this risk

    Virtuality from COVID-19 has acquired a preponderant role for the development of teaching in Higher Education and together with the internationalization strategies of education centers, give new paradigms to the intercultural, international and global dimensions that are going linked to the different educational processes. This article raises the importance of incorporating International Collaboration Online Courses (COIL) methodologies in the undergraduate training programs of the Catholic Uni-versity of Temuco and presents a proposal for a methodological guide elaborate for this university for this type of collaborative course.     Effects of Modified Invasion Games on Motor Competence and Self-Assessed Physical Condition in Elementary School Students in the Physical Education Classroom

    Modified invasion games promote the development of real and perceived motor competence. Children with higher motor competence are more likely to participate in physical activity practice and to remain in it, both in adolescence and adulthood. (1) Background: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of modified invasion games on the real motor competence and self-assessment of the physical condition fifth-grade students from a private school in Vina del Mar, Chile. (2) Methods: 40 girls and boys with an average age of 11.47 years (SD = 0.554) participated in this study during a 12-week intervention. The MOBAK 5-6 battery was used to assess actual motor competence, the SEMOK questionnaire was used to determine perceived motor competence, the International Fitness Scale (IFIS) self-assessment questionnaire was used to assess perceived physical fitness, and the weight/size ratio was used to determine BMI. A Friedman's nonparametric ANOVA analysis was applied to determine the effect of the intervention, in addition to an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to identify the influence of the covariates on motor competence. (3) Results: No statistically significant differences were established between weight, BMI, and waist circumference. There was a statistically significant difference after the intervention in the actual motor competence of object control (p = 0.005) and perceived motor competence of object control (p <= 0.001) (4) Conclusions: An intervention based on modified invasion games is effective for the improvement of actual and perceived motor competence of object control. It was not possible to identify a positive effect on the self-assessment of muscle strength after the intervention

    Research Thesis for Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the Digitalization Era: Learning Strategies and Responsible Research Conduct Road to a University Education 4.0 Paradigm

    Many university students have doubts about how or where to start writing their undergraduate thesis work; it is common not to be clear how to identify a research problem or even towards which topic their research is oriented, and there are doubts about how to process and systematize so much information available in the era of digitalization. This article presents learning strategies to formulate a research thesis for engineering undergraduate programs, with an emphasis on the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) toward a University Education 4.0 paradigm. The main themes and issues discussed in this article, carried out through learning strategies for students based on the scientific method, are the following: (i) Recommendations for choosing a research topic, (ii) Guidelines for problem identification and question research, (iii) Suggestions for choosing a thesis advisor, (iv) Instructions for finding suitable sources of information, (v) Structure of the table of contents for writing the thesis manuscript, and (vi) Indications for preparing an oral defense of thesis research. This article highlights recommendations and precautions directed towards professors and students with the use of the chatbot-type artificial intelligence (AI) tool called ChatGPT for the formulation of the thesis under a responsible conduct approach in research. This article concludes that the application of tutoring/guidance strategies between professors and students requires an adequate ethical use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) during the development of a research thesis to generate a comprehensive educational environment that encourages research and develops a sustainable learning process in the context of the University Education 4.0 paradigm

    Más allá de Habermas sin olvidar a Habermas: de la necesidad de pensar críticamente los universalismos

    En este trabajo, inmersos en dos de las tradiciones que dan cuerpo al pensamiento crítico (la Escuela de Frankfurt y el pensamiento crítico intercul-tural), nos proponemos desarrollar algunos lineamientos para seguir pensando en un necesario y renovado universalismo. Para desarrollar este objetivo, inda-garemos en algunas categorías centrales del pensamiento de Habermas al igual que en algunas de las críticas recibidas. Habermas es un buen punto de partida, ya que además de superar la visión pesimista y catastrófica de la primera gene-ración de la Escuela de Frankfurt sobre el futuro de la humanidad, yendo más allá de las razones instrumental y estratégica, con la emergencia de la acción comunicativa, instala una racionalidad trasformadora, universal, en la que el vínculo entre actores y hablantes va a desempeñar un papel fundamental. La meta no es sustituir su universalismo, ni tampoco negarlo, sino complejizarlo.In this paper, immersed in two of the traditions that give body to critical thinking (the Frankfurt School and intercultural critical thinking), we propose to develop some guidelines to continue pondering on a necessary and renewed universalism. To develop this objective, we will delve into some of Habermas’ central categories of thought as well as some of the criticism they received. Habermas is a good starting point, since in addition to overcoming the pessimistic and catastrophic vision of the first generation of the Frankfurt School on the future of humanity, going beyond instrumental and strategic reasons, with the emergence of communicative action, he installs a transformative, universal rationality, in which the link between actors and speakers will play a fundamental role. The goal is not to replace his universalism, nor to deny it, but to make it more complex
