A New Generalization of the Truncated Gumbel Distribution with Quantile Regression and Applications
In this article, we introduce a new model with positive support. This model is an extension of the truncated Gumbel distribution, where a shape parameter is incorporated that provides greater flexibility to the new model. The model is parameterized in terms of the p-th quantile of the distribution to perform quantile regression in this model. An extensive simulation study demonstrates the good performance of the maximum likelihood estimators in finite samples. Finally, two applications to real datasets related to the level of beta-carotene and body mass index are presented

The civic-military coup of September 11, 1973, in Chile, burst with its mantle of fear, silence, and horror into the lives of thousands of Chilean men and women who lived through prison, torture, murder, and exile. The fight to defend the human rights of the people, seriously violated in Chile, spread with the energy of a united network of wills in many countries of the world. Gabriel Reyes Arriagada was expelled from the country, under the State’s Internal Se-curity Law, without the right of return, without trial or charges, he lived his extensive exile in Mexico. Through conversations held for several months, a dialogic space of present and memory was created, which revealed the network of different organizations in solidarity with the people of Chile. Among them are Casa de Chile in Mexico and the Secretariate for Solidarity in America with the Chilean People. To collect Gabriel's testimony is to return to the past, as a necessary political task and with the conviction that history must be told by those who lived it
Reinterpreting the ecology of knowledge and intercultural translation from the pluricultural construction of knowledge
The objective of the paper is to explore the grammars of knowledge production and their projections as criteria of validity, or invisibility, for the integration of these into the cultural reservoir of the communities in which they are participants. From the analysis and discussion of the categories of 'ecology of knowledge'; 'intercultural translation' and 'recontextualization' seek to unravel the mechanics of how these knowledge structures of validated knowledge are transformed into markers of social relations. That is, the relationships established by the different elements that make up the structure of knowledge and the type of realities-knowledge that they account for. It concludes by making a critical assessment of the horizon of possibilities that the social praxis of recontextualizing knowledge allows in terms of its possibilities of valuing traditional indigenous knowledge as constitutive knowledge of the reservoir of knowledge that structures the thinking of their cultural contexts, to the extent that. For this reason, it is postulated as a sine qua non condition to implement Bernstein's 'recontextualization' or Santos's 'ecology of knowledge' in its political nature based on collective and explicit moral principles
High-intensity interval training reduces the induction of neutrophil extracellular traps in older men using live-neutrophil imaging as biosensor
Neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis) is a mechanism used by neutrophils to capture pathogens with their own DNA. However, the exacerbation of this immune response is related to serious inflammatory diseases. Aging is known to lead to an excessive increase in NETosis associated with various diseases. Under this scenario, the search for strategies that regulate the release of NETosis in older people becomes relevant. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves repeated bouts of relatively intense exercise with alternating short recovery periods. This training has shown beneficial effects on health parameters during aging and disease. However, little is known about the potential role of HIIT in the regulation of NETosis in healthy older people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the induction of NETosis by serum from healthy young and older men, before and after 12 weeks of HIIT using healthy neutrophils as a biosensor. HIIT was performed 3 times per week for 12 weeks in young (YOUNG; 21 +/- 1 years, BMI 26.01 +/- 2.64 kg center dot m(-2), n = 10) and older men (OLDER; 66 +/- 5 years, BMI 27.43 +/- 3.11 kg center dot m(-2), n = 10). Serum samples were taken before and after the HIIT program and NETosis was measured with live cell imaging in donated neutrophils cultured with serum from the participants for 30 h. Our results showed that serum from older men at baseline induced greater baseline NETosis than younger men (p = 0.8), and 12 weeks of HIIT significantly reduced (Interaction Effect, p < 0.05; effect size, 0.134) the induction of NETosis in older men. In conclusion, HIIT is a feasible non-invasive training strategy modulating NETosis induction. Additionally, the use of neutrophils as a biosensor is an effective method for the quantification of NETosis induction in real time
Pain neuroscience education for patients with chronic pain: A scoping review from teaching-learning strategies, educational level, and cultural perspective
Objective: (1) To identify the characteristics of PNE programs in terms of teaching-learning strategies, session modality, content delivery format, number of sessions, total minutes and instructional support material used in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, (2) to describe PNE adaptations for patients with different educational levels or cultural backgrounds, and (3) to describe the influence of the patient's educational level or cultural background on the effects of PNE. Methods: The PRISMA guideline for scoping reviews was followed. Nine databases were systematically searched up to July 8, 2023. Articles that examined clinical or psychosocial variables in adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain who received PNE were included. Results: Seventy-one articles were included. Studies found benefits of PNE through passive/active teachinglearning strategies with group/individual sessions. However, PNE programs presented great heterogeneity and adaptations to PNE were poorly reported. Most studies did not consider educational level and culture in the effects of PNE. Conclusions: Despite the large number of studies on PNE and increased interest in this intervention, the educational level and culture are poorly reported in the studies. Practical implications: It is recommended to use passive and/or active teaching-learning strategies provided in individual and/or group formats considering the patient's educational level and culture
Persistence and pathway of glyphosate degradation in the coastal wetland soil of central Delaware
Glyphosate is a globally dominant herbicide. Here, we studied the degradation and microbial response to glyphosate application in a wetland soil in central Delaware for controlling invasive species (Phragmites australis). We applied a two-step solid-phase extraction method using molecularly imprinted polymers designed for the separation and enrichment of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) from soils before their analysis by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and Q Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry methods. Our results showed that approximately 90 % of glyphosate degraded over 100 d after application, with AMPA being a minor (<10 %) product. Analysis of glyphosate-specific microbial genes to identify microbial response and function revealed that the expression of the phnJ gene, which codes C-P lyase enzyme, was consistently dominant over the gox gene, which codes glyphosate oxidoreductase enzyme, after glyphosate application. Both gene and concentration data independently suggested that C-P bond cleavage-which forms sarcosine or glycine-was the dominant degradation pathway. This is significant because AMPA, a more toxic product, is reported to be the preferred pathway of glyphosate degradation in other soil and natural environments. The degradation through a safer pathway is encouraging for minimizing the detrimental impacts of glyphosate on the environment
Militarismo, racismo e sensibilidades bárbaras: sociogênese do autoritarismo do controle social e punitivo no Cone Sul
Collaborative writing of argumentative texts in English using Google Drive
The objective of this research was twofold: to measure the effect of collaborative writing in the performance of students of English for writing argumentative texts in English as L2 by means of an online collaborative writing tool (Google Drive) for a period of 12 sessions in a b-Learning environment, and to compare these results with those of a control group working individually. The quasi experimental study involved pre-test, immediate post-test, and two delayed post-tests for both groups, in a mixed model for repeated measures. Results allow for hypothesis validation, namely, that b-Learning collaborative writing supported by technological tools improves, facilitates and encourages student gains in writing in English as L2 in an instructional environment for academic purposes
