Dietary calcifediol reduces mesenteric adiposity to the benefit of carcass growth independently of circulating vitamin D hormone in juvenile Atlantic salmon
Dietary vitamin D is required by cultivated fish for optimal growth, feed utilisation and bone health. The in vivo conversion of cholecalciferol (D3) to active vitamin D hormone (1,25-OH-D3) may be impaired in farm-raised fish fed modern feed formulations. Requiring fewer metabolic steps for its conversion, the use of dietary calcifediol (25-OH-D3) may mitigate against deficits in vitamin D metabolism. A 90-day experimental feeding trial was undertaken in juvenile (23 g) Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to test the efficacy of 25-OH-D3 added to a standard diet containing recommended levels of D3 (5640 IU). Test diets contained 100, 200 or 400 mu g/kg added 25-OH-D3 against a no additive control diet. Effects on zootechnical performance, indices of adiposity, bone mineralisation, and circulating vitamin D metabolites were tested. Dietary 25-OH-D3 significantly reduced feed conversion ratio (FCR) and resulted in numerical increases in growth performance. 25-OH-D3 also significantly reduced mesenteric adiposity with concurrent increases in carcass weight. Levels of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and manganese were not modulated in the vertebrae of fish receiving 25-OH-D3. Circulating 25-OH-D3 remained below detection limits and 1,25-OH-D3 was not significantly modulated by the dietary manipulations. The significant reduction of mesenteric adiposity to the benefit of carcass weight shows that dietary 25-OH-D3 improves the utilisation of lipids. The vitamin D requirement for bone mineralisation was met by the basal diet. Segmented regression estimates a dietary 25-OH-D3 supplementation of 143 to 180 mu g/kg for improved feed conversion and reduced mesenteric adiposity. The lack of correlation between circulating vitamin D hormone and mesenteric adiposity indicates that lipid metabolism is regulated by localised tissue activation of vitamin D, rather than the endocrine functions of circulating 1,25-OH-D3

Analysis of Iberoamerican legislation on the labor market integration of people with disabilities from a gender perspective
El objetivo del presente estudio es determinar si en la legislación iberoamericana sobre inclusión laboral de personas con discapacidad existen fuentes de discriminación de género, o si se establecen medidas para la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres. Con dicha finalidad, se analiza la legislación de rango legal en veintiún países iberoamericanos. Los resultados evidenciaron fuentes de discriminación indirecta en la legislación de los veintiún países examinados y disposiciones orientadas a la igualdad de género únicamente en la legislación de Ecuador y Paraguay.This study aims to determine whether there are sources of gender discrimination in the Iberoamerican legislation on the labor market integration of people with disabilities, or whether there are measures for equality between men and women with disabilities. For this purpose, is analyzed the legislation of legal status in twenty-one Iberoamerican countries. The results revealed sources of indirect discrimination in the legislation of the twenty-one countries examined and provisions aimed at gender equality only in the legislation of Ecuador and Paraguay

Religious beliefs in public administration and behaviour surrounding abortion decriminalisation in COVID-19 era
In the context of reproductive health, policies focused on decriminalising abortion that resulted in religious beliefs, attitudes and behaviours being affected. The main purpose of this article was to identify the religious beliefs of abortion in the emergency situations such as COVID-19. Although there is no general consensus regarding abortion, there is almost 'general opposition to causing harm to life' in most religions. In the current study, 28 indicators and four factors (seven for each factor) related to pregnancy termination were explored through an exploratory factor structure. The study was therefore non-experimental, cross-sectional and exploratory, with 100 students selected in a non-probabilistic way
Maximizing Bioethanol Production from Eucalyptus globulus Using Steam Explosion Pretreatment: A Multifactorial Design and Fermenter Development for High Solid Loads
Steam explosion pretreatment is suitable for bioethanol production from Eucalyptus globulus wood. Multifactorial experiment designs were used to find the optimal temperature and residence time required to obtain the best glucose yield from the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated materials. The chemical composition, crystallinity index, morphology and polymerization degree of the pretreated materials were correlated with enzymatic accessibility. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) using a fed-batch strategy was applied to three different laboratory-scale fermenters. The optimization of the pretreatment was obtained at 208 degrees C and 11 min. However, the enzymatic hydrolysis performance did not show significant differences from the material obtained at 196 degrees C and 9.5 min, which was determined to be the real optimum, owing to its lower energy requirement. The vertical fermenter with type 'G' blades and the horizontal fermenter with helical blades were both highly efficient for reaching ethanol yields close to 90% based on dry wood, and ethanol concentrations close to 9.0% v/v

In this article we contend that, given the aesthetic fact of human imperfection, it is possible to imagine that rationality emanates from the value of solidarity. We identify an evolution of the principle of good faith towards the principle of solidarity. Thus, dignity, the foundation of all rights, reaches its highest expression.Este trabajo argumenta que a partir del hecho estético de la imperfección humana es posible imaginar que el objeto de la racionalidad brota del valor de la solidar-idad. Occurrence of Soil Fungi in Antarctic Pristine Environments
The presence of fungi in pristine Antarctic soils is of particular interest because of the diversity of this microbial group. However, the extreme conditions that coexist in Antarctica produce a strong selective pressure that could lead to the evolution of novel mechanisms for stress tolerance by indigenous microorganisms. For this reason, in recent years, research on cold-adapted microorganisms has increased, driven by their potential value for applications in biotechnology. Cold-adapted fungi, in particular, have become important sources for the discovery of novel bioactive secondary metabolites and enzymes. In this study, we studied the fungal community structure of 12 soil samples from Antarctic sites, including King George Island (including Collins Glacier), Deception Island and Robert Island. Culturable fungi were isolated and described according to their morphological and phenotypical characteristics, and the richness index was compared with soil chemical properties to describe the fungal community and associated environmental parameters. We isolated 54 fungal strains belonging to the following 19 genera: Penicillium, Pseudogymnoascus, Lambertella, Cadophora, Candida, Mortierella, Oxygenales, Geomyces, Vishniacozyma, Talaromyces, Rhizopus, Antarctomyces, Cosmospora, Tetracladium, Leptosphaeria, Lecanicillium, Thelebolus, Bjerkandera and an uncultured Zygomycete. The isolated fungi were comprised of 70% Ascomycota, 10% Zygomycota, 10% Basidiomycota, 5% Deuteromycota and 5% Mucoromycota, highlighting that most strains were associated with similar genera grown in cold environments. Among the culturable strains, 55% were psychrotrophic and 45% were psychrophilic, and most were Ascomycetes occurring in their teleomorph forms. Soils from the Collins Glacier showed less species richness and greater species dominance compared with the rest of the sites, whereas samples 4, 7, and 10 (from Fildes Bay, Coppermine Peninsula and Arctowski Station, respectively) showed greater species richness and less species dominance. Species richness was related to the C/N ratio, whereas species dominance was inversely related to C and N content. Thus, the structure of the fungal community was mainly related to soil chemical parameters more than sample location and altitude
Interplay of phytohormone signaling with aluminum and drought-stress resistance mechanisms: An integrated perspective amidst climate change
In recent years, the combined stress of drought and aluminum (Al) has received considerable attention due to the widespread distribution of acidic soils worldwide, exacerbated by climate change. The responses of plants to drought and Al stress are intricately governed by phytohormones, which serve as key regulators for a range of resistance mechanisms. However, the role of combined drought-Al stress remains largely unexplored. Therefore, it is important to critically examine the most recent advances in plant resistance mechanisms to combined drought and Al stress, with a specific focus on the potential involvement of phytohormonal mechanisms. It is postulated that phytohormones such as abscisic acid, auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, and jasmonates are also involved in triggering the activation of resistance mechanisms against combined drought-Al stress, such as induction of stomatal closure, increased exudation of organic acids, and increased antioxidant activity. This review aims to deepen our understanding of the intricate interplay between phytohormonal signaling, combined Al-drought stress, and the implications of climate change. By shedding light on the underlying mechanisms that govern how plants respond to these combined stresses, we aim to pave the way for targeted strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on plant performance
“We are an example of library”: The case of a successful school library
Este artículo es de acceso abierto bajo la modalidad Bronze Open Access.Se presenta un estudio de caso cuyo objetivo principal es indagar en el funcionamiento de una biblioteca escolar validada como exitosa en su respectivo contexto socio-educativo. La investigación se desarrolla en una escuela pública de la ciudad de Barcelona, y los procedimientos de recogida de datos han sido la observación participante, entrevistas semiestructuradas con tres maestras de la escuela, y una encuesta de hábitos lectores para alumnos y ex alumnos. Los resultados muestran la gran diversidad de prácticas pedagógicas desarrolladas, la visión compartida que el equipo docente tiene de la biblioteca y la influencia de la intervención escolar en los hábitos lectores del alumnado. Se concluye subrayando el interés que presenta el conocimiento de casos exitosos de biblioteca escolar para la elaboración de políticas de desarrollo en este ámbito.This article presents a case study with the main objective of gathering research regarding the operation of a school library ranked as successful within its particular socio-educational context. The research was carried out in a Barcelona public school with the following methods of data collection: participant observation, semistructured interviews with three school teachers, and a student and alumni survey on reading habits. The results demonstrate the high diversity in the educational practices developed, a shared vision regarding the library among teaching staff, and the influence of school intervention on student reading habits. It can be concluded that knowledge of cases demonstrating the success of school libraries has the potential to inspire new community policies in the field
