Structural applicability of plastic incorporated concrete
Modulus of elasticity of concrete indicates the resistance of the material to deflection. The elastic modulus depends on the components of the concrete. When new replacement materials are introduced into the concrete, it is important to evaluate the modulus of elasticity of that concrete as it is used in structural applications. Nowadays plastic waste is used in pavement construction. Incorporation of plastic bottle waste in concrete as a replacement for aggregates is gaining attention. The application of this concrete in structures need to be studied. Evaluation of elastic modulus of plastic aggregate concrete is a first step towards its structural applicability. As an initial step to this study, two grades of normal concrete are prepared and its elastic modulus is evaluated. The result shows similar relation of compressive strength and elastic modulus as per standard code value.

Evaluation of four anaesthetics in freshwater baitfish (Cheirodon interruptus) (Ostariophysi: Characidae)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of eugenol, propofol, isoflurane and lidocaine on physiological and anaesthesiologic variables of Cheirodon interruptus, the most widely used baitfish in Argentina. Six groups were formed: 25 mg/l eugenol, 50 mg/l eugenol, 300 mg/l lidocaine, 0.2 mg/l isoflurane, 0.4 mg/l isoflurane, and 5 mg/l propofol. The tests are carried out with water at a temperature of 18.03±2.1 °C, pH 6.87±0.18, dissolved oxygen 6.73±0.05 mg l-1 and conductivity 3.74±0.04 μS cm-. The initial weight (1.6±0.4 g) and total length (5.1±0.4 cm) were statistically similar between groups. The results indicate that eugenol and isoflurane meet the requirements that a good anaesthetic for use in fish should meet. For propofol and lidocaine, it is considered necessary to review the dosage to adapt its use in C. interruptus due to the long recovery time. The fish treated with isoflurane (0.4 mg/l) and propofol had a significant decrease (p<0.001 and p<0.05, respectively) between baseline respiratory rate and during anesthesia. None of the drugs used caused fish deaths
Microbial Community Composition in Take-All Suppressive Soils
Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) is the main soilborne factor that affects wheat production around the world. Recently we reported the occurrence of six suppressive soils in monoculture areas from indigenous "Mapuche" communities, and evidenced that the suppression relied on the biotic component of those soils. Here, we compare the rhizosphere and endosphere microbial community structure (total bacteria, actinomycetes, total fungi, and ascomycetes) of wheat plants grown in suppressive and conducive soils. Our results suggested that Ggt suppression could be mediated mostly by bacterial endophytes, rather than rhizosphere microorganisms, since the community structure was similar in all suppressive soils as compared with conducive. Interestingly, we found that despite the lower incidence of take-all disease in suppressive soils, the Ggt concentration in roots was not significantly reduced in all suppressive soils compared to those growing in conducive soil. Therefore, the disease suppression is not always related to a reduction of the pathogen biomass. Furthermore, we isolated endophytic bacteria from wheat roots growing in suppressive soils. Among them we identified Serratia spp. and Enterobacter spp. able to inhibit Ggt growth in vitro. Since the disease, but not always pathogen amount, was reduced in the suppressive soils, we propose that take all disease suppressiveness is not only related to direct antagonism to the pathogen
Mathematical Identity and Transition in Higher Education in Virtual Contexts
This study, in the form of a short narrative, analyzes the experiences, in a mathematics course, of four engineering students who began their university studies during the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The notions of identitarian work and mathematical identity underlay an examination of the processes of the identitarian reconstruction of the students in the contexts of virtual education. The results show that this identitarian work is closely linked to the nature of the activity of mathematics and the context in which it occurs. The transition to a mathematical education in a university represents an opportunity for the positive reconstruction of mathematical identities and the professional choices of the students
Physiological and agronomical traits effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in seedlings of <i>Solanum lycopersicum</i> L
Background Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been reported to have contrasting effects on plant physiology, while their effects on sugar, protein, and amino acid metabolism are poorly understood. In this work, we evaluated the effects of TiO2 NPs on physiological and agronomical traits of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings. Tomato seeds were treated with TiO2 NPs (1000 and 2000 mg L- 1), TiO2 microparticles (mu Ps, 2000 mg L- 1) as the size control, and ultrapure water as negative control. Results The dry matter of stems (DMs), leaves (DMl) and total dry matter (DMt) decreased as particle concentration increased. This trend was also observed in the maximum quantum yield of light-adapted photosystem II (PSII) (Fv'/Fm'), the effective quantum yield of PSII (phi PSII), and net photosynthesis (P-n). The concentrations of sugars, total soluble proteins, and total free amino acids were unaffected, but there were differences in the daily dynamics of these compounds among the treatments. Conclusion Our results suggest that treating tomato seeds with TiO2 might affect PSII performance, net photosynthesis and decrease biomass production, associated with a concentration- and size-related effect of TiO2 particles
Pregnancy by surrogacy : brazilian legal system and comparative law in the face of financial support for pregnant women
Surrogacy pregnancy took on proportions from the 1980s onwards, with the popularization of in vitro fertilization techniques. In Brazil, however, there is no legal norm regulating the procedure, only a Resolution issued by the Federal Council of Medicine, which brings uncertainty regarding the rights and guarantees of those involved. Still, advances in technology have brought concerns about the value of human dignity, built over time, which has been threatened by the possibility of “commodification” of human beings. The objective of the research was to explain the treatment of the subject in the Brazilian legal system compared to other legal systems, as well as to analyze the feasibility of regulation, notably in terms of support for surrogate mothers. Thus, initially, it was necessary to discuss the legal nature of pregnancy by substitution and possible risks of “commodification” of the human being. In the same way, it was necessary to explain the treatment given to pregnancy by substitution at the international level. Also, the surrogate pregnancy was analyzed in the Brazilian legal system, in order to verify the eventual viability of regulating surrogacy in terms of financial support for the pregnant woman for the expenses experienced.
Quality of life, level of physical activity and functional tests in actively working adults and older people
Background: The population of actively working older people is growing rapidly. The relationship between quality of life, levels of physical activity and functionality in this population is not entirely clear. Aim: To determine the association between quality of life, levels of physical activity and functional tests in actively working adults and older people. Material and Methods: Cross sectional assessment of 138 adults aged 40 to 50 years (53% women) and 119 older people aged 60 to 75 years (53% women) who were actively working in two public services. Quality of life was measured with the SF-36 questionnaire and usual physical activity was assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-short). Handgrip strength, the timed up and go (TUG) and chair stand test (CST) were used as functional tests. Results: Compared to older people, adults had better physical functional tests (P < 0.01). Older people had better scores in the mental health component (MHC) of quality of life (p < 0.05). In adults, the physical health component of quality of life (CSF) had a positive association with physical activity (Spearman Rho (r(s))= 0.270; p = 0.01), grip strength (r(s) = 0.330; p < 0.01) and the TUG (r(s) = -0.229; p < 0.01). In older patients, CSM and CST were positively correlated (r (s) = 0.201; P = 0.029). In both groups, a correlation was observed between CSM, grip strength (adults r(s) = 0.283; p < 0.01; older people r(s) = 0.211; P = 0.02) and with TUG (adults r(s) = -0.197; P = 0.021; older people r(s) = - 0.212; p = 0.02). Conclusions: There is a positive correlation between quality of life and level of physical activity in working adults, which is not observed in older people. Adequate performance in physical functional tests is positively correlated with better quality of life (CSF and CSM) in adults and only with the mental health component in older people
Intertwining memories of women in peripheral territories about the Civic-Military Coup in Chile
The memories of women in peripheral territories are essential to understanding the political -social impact of the Coup d'etat in Chile, contributing to making visible the subalternate processes by historiography focused on the socio-political dynamics of large cities. This article is a process of inquiry and rescue of memory through the testimonies of women in the Biobio, La Araucania, Los Rios, and Los Lagos regions. With this purpose, we seek to intertwine the invisible testimonies through the study of memory, highlighting the role of women in the political, historical, and social aspects that underlie the Coup d'etat and that describe the experiences in peripheral territories. The research is qualitative and is approached as a multiple case study through fieldwork in which group and in-depth interviews were carried out. The data analysis was based on an open coding process to develop categories inductively. Through the articulation of the narratives, the results show four categories: (1) democratic breakdown and repercussions in daily life; (2) experiences of violence; (3) fear and trauma, and (4) family protection and collective care. The findings allowed us to uncover the ways of life that the populations adopted after the 1973 institutional breakdown, as well as the forms of resistance and care dynamics among women in the peripheral territories of southern Chile
Overvaluation of weight and shape in obesity: a comparative study between people with and without binge eating disorder
Introduction The overvaluation of weight and shape is a diagnostic criterion in eating disorders, except in binge eating disorder (BED), where it has received less attention. This aspect is also not usually analyzed in people with overweight or obesity without an eating disorder. This research aims to identify the indicators of symptomatology, as well as those of self-construction and cognitive structure, that are associated with overvaluation in obesity, either alone or in conjunction with BED.Method A sample of 102 overweight or obese participants was accessed. The sample was divided into four groups: one without overvaluation or BED (n = 33); a second with overvaluation and without BED (n = 21); a third with BED, but without overvaluation (n = 15), and a fourth with BED and overvaluation (n = 33). The groups completed instruments regarding eating symptomatology, anxiety, depression, and stress. In addition, they were administered the Repertory Grid Technique, a semi-structured interview to evaluate the cognitive structure involved in the construal of the self and others. Results The factors of overvaluation and the presence of BED independently explained eating symptomatology, and the latter also showed a tendency to influence anxiety, depression, and stress. In terms of cognitive structure, weight polarization was explained by overvaluation, while BED was associated with a high presence of cognitive conflicts. In self-construction, BED was the factor that explained the differences, particularly in Self-Ideal discrepancy.Discussion The results highlight the importance of overvaluation in obesity, even in the absence of BED. Its evaluation and treatment are recommended. Furthermore, in the case of BED, it is also advisable to evaluate the overvaluation of weight and shape since it can be a severity specifier
