    Lai mi ka si (I am Lai mi): A Poetry Collection

    In this poetry collection, I combine oral history with official Burmese history to trace my family’s diasporic journey from the mountains of Myanmar to Kentwood, Michigan in 2008. To do so, I conducted interviews with my mother, father, grandmother, and grandfather over Zoom and accumulated dozens of hours of material. A rumination on refugee grief and displacement, this creative work expresses and investigates the multi-layered ritual of grief refugees conduct internally and externally—an intentional and powerful foray into the “affective.” Finally, this creative work intends to sift through the complications of transnational grief: how, when, and why do we grieve

    The Cambodian Family: Holocaust Survival, by Cathy Long, is a powerful memoir that recounts the darkest days or “Year Zero” in Cambodian history. It captures the story of how the author survived the harsh regime under the Khmer Rouge as a wife, mother and caregiver. Long’s memoir also touches on the horror, trauma, grief, family separation and the loss that occurred from 1975-1979 that was experienced by so many, shedding a light on the atrocities of the Cambodian people during this era. Through the hardships, Long instilled a pillar of hope, resilience and faith for a better future for her and her family. She still believed that Cambodia could still become a good country, and valued democracy, diversity, and equality

    The Many Afterlives of Orientalism: Translation, Reception, and Appropriation of Saidian Theory in China

    During the mass translation of Western “post-isms” since the 1990s, Saidian postcolonial theory, Orientalism in particular, was introduced to China through interpretation, reception, and appropriation in the Chinese academe, becoming an important discursive tool for the debate about China. The translated work is perceived as the “afterlife” of the original work, and Saidian theory achieves its constantly renewed and comprehensive unfolding through translation and critical reception in China. In this sense, translation contributes to the complexity and multiplicity of traveling theories, which plays an important part in the formation of Chinese literary theories. Arguably, theoretical transformation occurs through debates and dialogue that bring about new insights into the intellectual traditions of both sides. The recent decade has witnessed the rise of “Sinologism” as a critical theory, which can be perceived as a Chinese reply to Orientalism or, rather a Chinese appropriation. Thus, the traveling of Saidian theory to China exemplifies that discursive formation and transformation are characterized by constant bi-directional interaction and exchange between the appropriating and the appropriable, and emphasizes the significance of constructing a dialogic framework that values cultural pluralism

    A Machine Learning Model of Perturb-Seq Data for Use in Space Flight Gene Expression Profile Analysis

    The genetic perturbations caused by spaceflight on biological systems tend to have a system-wide effect which is often difficult to deconvolute it into individual signals with specific points of origin. Single cell multi-omic data can provide a profile of the perturbational effects, but does not necessarily indicate the initial point of interference within the network. The objective of this project is to take advantage of large scale and genome-wide perturbational datasets by using them to train a tuned machine learning model that is capable of predicting the effects of unseen perturbations in new data. Perturb-Seq datasets are large libraries of single cell multi-omics data collected from extensive typically CRISPR driven knockout models in cultured cell lines. The advantage of synthetically generated perturbational datasets is that they provide a systematic analogue for labeled training data. The advent of the most recent generation of generative Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, particularly transformers, make it an ideal time to re-assess large scale data libraries in order to grasp cell and even organism-wide genomic expression motifs. By tailoring an algorithm to target intended features centered around the catalogued perturbations, we intend to create a solution model capable of predicting the effects of multiple perturbations in combination, locating points of origin for perturbation in new datasets, predicting the effects of known perturbations in new datasets, annotation of large-scale network motifs. Experimentally determined perturbational behaviors are useful as a means of further tuning the predictive capabilities of the model. Consequently, the NASA spaceflight multi-omic datasets provide an ideal testbed in order to bolster previous findings and confirm new ones

    Mushrooom Production Without Solid Substrates

    Novel biotechnological approaches are needed to enhance renewable food production and waste recycling capabilities in resource-constrained environments. Edible mushrooms possess nutritious profiles and represent emerging opportunities to develop circular bioproduction by transforming waste organic materials into food and high-value products. However, traditional mushroom cultivation methods utilizing solid substrates have technical limitations like 1) uneven nutrient diffusion, 2) constant sterilization needs, 3) numerous intermediate steps that are energy and time-demanding, and 4) waste production from bags and jars. This work introduces an innovative hydroponic fungal cultivation system called Mycoponics™ using bioengineered ceramic materials. This liquid-nutrient-based technique optimizes fungal metabolism and facilitates precise nutrient delivery through biophysically engineered ceramic growth elements, overcoming the limitations of traditional solid substrates. To validate Mycoponics™, we have developed different geometries of the biophysical ceramic growth elements (i.e. mycoponic tubes) and formulated novel living nutrient solutions for experiments using various commercial fungal strains and growth conditions. Sporocarp (i.e. mushroom) production is achieved through different nutrient solutions engineered for the nutritional requirements of each fungal strain. Infrared imaging and microscopy demonstrated consistent, robust mycelial development compared to traditional methods, even when the nutrient solution is not sterilized likewise allowing mycelium access to circulating nutrients without substrate penetration showed longer constant production, avoiding nutrient depletion seen in conventional cakes. Synthesis of high-value products like mycoleather was explored, showing uniform, high-quality material production. By avoiding bulky substrates and exploring new growth surfaces, Mycoponics™ represents a solution for food security, sustainable biotechnology, and bioregenerative life support systems on Earth

    Autonomous Roadside Mower testing and Evaluation in Digital Twin Environments

    Modern day roadside mowing operations in Indiana are performed by contractors operating tractors that pull flex-wing mowers. These mowing operations span over 11,000 miles of road across the state and create serious risk for human operators. Autonomous mowers can provide a safer alternative, but a replacement system must demonstrate an acceptable level of trust before large-scale deployment. A high-fidelity digital-twin environment can facilitate the capability to rapidly test and evaluate platforms in their desired application, while enabling zero real-world risk, a wide range of test variables, and repeatability of a test setup. The simulation environment must be at a level of fidelity that can generate representative results and model behaviors of the autonomous platforms in the real-world, while also providing detailed information to assess the safety and performance of the vehicles proposed. The tool proposed can provide information for the decision making of autonomy integration and provide insight on platform capabilities to developers

    Librarians and Teachers Co-designing for IL: Creating Informed Learners in the Classroom

    Academic librarians possess the necessary expertise to teach students disciplinary information practices, but typically have limited access to students in the classroom. To leverage librarian expertise and bring information literacy into the disciplinary classroom, academic libraries have created development programs that prepare classroom teachers to teach about information literacy (Hammonds, 2022; Wishkoski, Lundstrom, & Davis, 2018). The Creating Informed Learners in the Classroom program takes this idea a step further by bringing librarians and teachers together as partners to co-design information-rich student projects. An educational design model called ‘informed learning design’ (Maybee, Bruce, Lupton, and Pang, 2019) guided the collaborative design work. Grounded in an approach to information literacy called informed learning (Bruce, 2008), informed learning design guides the creation of learning activities that enable students to use information while simultaneously learning about disciplinary content. Participant materials created during the program were analyzed to examine the capability of informed learning design in supporting librarian and teacher partners in a co-design process. Partially funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS), the program was implemented at three research universities in the United States. Of the 15 librarians and 16 teachers who joined the program, 8 librarians and 9 teachers (8 teams) completed the ethics forms consenting to participate in the study. In late 2020, four Zoom sessions were conducted in which the teams applied informed learning design to create student projects in which students engage with information within a disciplinary learning context. Examples of student projects created by the participating teams include creating local public health campaigns to share COVID-related health information, analyzing forensic data, and extracting information from scholarly articles in chemistry.Data were analyzed by thematic analysis. Data included: 1) worksheets completed during the program, 2) a report summarizing student achievement and experiences completing the projects, and 3) reflections from the librarians. Initial findings suggest that librarians perceive that informed learning design provides a useful structure and shared language with which to discuss how students use information in disciplinary settings. While challenging to learn, the librarians conveyed that this created a more equitable environment for both librarians and teachers to participate because neither were drawing solely from their own backgrounds.The findings also show that using the informed learning design model made teachers more aware of how students may struggle to use information. Librarians indicated that they felt empowered by applying their expertise to impact important, but often implicit, student learning goals related to using information. The findings from the study will inform attendees interested in creating educational development opportunities for integrating information literacy into disciplinary learning at their institutions

    Major challenges have altered the status quo of tourism in Europe in the last years: COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, geopolitical instability, the energy crisis, and widespread inflation. Concurrently, significant societal changes in work-life, movement, and recreational patterns are also affecting tourism dynamics and trends. The current tourism landscape is thus profoundly different than it was until 2019, and it is in strong need of finding new solutions and pathways to radically innovate while keeping local communities and the environment at the core of its strategies. Destination Management is the systematic management approach capable of guaranteeing a shared vision of long-lasting development for which integrating tourism international sustainability standards and approaches is essential. However, tourism lacks specific interdisciplinary and governance skills that generally refer to Sustainable Tourism Destination Management, while educational institutes lack curricula that foster the ability of students and professionals to lead the change towards sustainable tourism. Therefore, WeNaTour project, co-founded by the Erasmus+ Programme by the European Union, was developed with the aim to increase the capacity of educational institutes and businesses to integrate research results, innovative practices, and digitalisation into a first-class educational offer to foster sustainable tourism while supporting the creation of new products and services in emerging markets. It will do so by assessing innovation and market potential of novel niches; designing new services in two GSTC-certified Destinations; delivering high-quality multidisciplinary training embedding GSTC-certification; creating an international Alliance on Sustainable Tourism to replicate and exploit results and lead to tourism transformation and long-lasting impacts
