Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER) Annual Report from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023
In this annual report, we present readership trends and authorship metrics of the Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER) in 2023. J-PEER published two issues in volume 13 comprising 15 articles. These articles covered a variety of topics including student-focused participation, outcomes, and practices and teacher-focused instruments and professional development, among other topics. The Death of Glasnost and Perestroika
This paper covers the rise, fall, and ultimate destruction of the twin policies of Glasnost and Perestroika in Russia as they existed under the regimes of Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin. After ascending to the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev attempted to liberalize the USSR through his policies of Glasnost and Perestroika. While these policies were not always followed under Gorbachev, it is clear that they were relatively successful at creating a freer society and state. However, these policies began to whither under Yeltsin, as the state, particularly the office of President, began to amass greater power alongside a society which saw the slow encroachment of censorship. Finally, Glasnost and Perestroika would perish under Vladimir Putin with his monopoly on state power accompanied by the full return of state censorship
The Ugliness Movement: Riot Grrrl\u27s Use of Ugliness as Feminist Subversion
In the 1990s, Riot Grrrl took the punk and feminist worlds by storm. It emphasized community and represented third-wave feminism in radical form. One particular example that represents the Riot Grrrl ideology well is ugliness. Throughout the movement, artists like Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna used their musical platform to show the world their view of femininity. This involved body writing and reclaiming words used to degrade women, as well as dressing up in controversial outfits dubbed as “kinderwhore.” The aims of these women in using ugliness in their music were to subvert sexism in the punk scene and bring women’s experiences to light. This paper analyzes the ugliness movement within Riot Grrrl, what its purpose was, and different tactics used within it. Additionally, it looks at modern music by female artists to see how ugliness as a concept is still being utilized today as women continue to fight against the discrimination they face in the music industry
Princes, Patriarch, and the People: William of Tyre and Popular Legitimacy in the People’s Crusade and the Principality of Antioch, 1095-1143
This paper will focus on popular legitimacy in regard to William of Tyre’s coverage of the People’s Crusade in the 1090s and the Principality of Antioch from 1130-1143. This paper involves a discussion of Peter the Hermit, Alice of Antioch, Ralph of Domfront, and Raymond of Antioch as depicted in A History of Deeds Done Beyond the Sea. In his discussion of these political figures, William reveals his understanding of popular legitimacy, namely what makes popular action acceptable and unacceptable. The analysis focuses on how William uses popular action to tailor legitimacy in accordance with his political narrative. This work serves as a reminder that, even in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, common people were not idle in political affairs and made an impression on the minds of key thinkers at the time
Decolonizing Tutor and Writing Center Administrative Labor: An Autoethnography of a South Asian Writing Center’s Personnel
This piece informs my journey of thinking and contextualizing the validity of autoethnography as a decolonial qualitative research method in writing center scholarship. This piece provides the lilt of everyday writing center initiatives, labor, and workings using five email exchanges as data depicting my interactions with various writing center stakeholders as a transnational writing center studies student-tutor, administrator, and doctoral student from South Asia, specifically India. This piece also argues how I used my experiences as one of a writing center’s personnel as a tool of empowerment in my liminal position in my writing center and elaborates on those experiences, broadening the scope of research trajectories and mediums within writing center scholarship using counternarratives in the existing literature
Demystifying Traffic Engineering for the Rest of Us
Have you ever uttered the phrase “I’m not a traffic engineer”? When traffic engineers go off on a tangent, can it start to sound like a foreign language? This session is for you! We will break down traffic engineering concepts, such as innovative intersections, traffic analysis buzzwords and acronyms, and more. This session will be geared towards non-traffic engineers and anyone else who might explain these concepts to the traveling public
US 33 Over Blue River: ABC’s With Steel
The US 33 over the Blue River Bridge Replacement project is the first INDOT project of its kind, and a great example of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). The project used prefabricated steel beam modular super- structure units with prefabricated substructure units, approach slabs, terminal joints, and “steel-like” UHPC for the 8-inch closure pours. Correcting the substan- dard roadway superelevation added complexity to the design and detailing. Join us to learn more
Work Zone Safety Fundamentals and Best Practices
Join us for a discussion of fundamental principles and best practices of temporary traffic control (TTC) that promote work zone safety. This session will cover topics that designers should know and consider when developing TTC plans. Attendees who will most benefit from this session are designers new to TTC and experienced designers looking for a refresher
Exploration and Implementation of Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) in Indiana Roadway Maintenance Activities
INDOT reported 153 truck mounted attenuator (TMA)-related accidents between 2016 and 2021. The autonomous TMA (ATMA) removes the driver from the TMA to enhance their safety; however, the functionality and workers’ perception of ATMA must be assessed comprehensively before its implementation in INDOT. This presentation summarizes the findings from 25 closed- road tests and five weeks of field tests of ATMA under four maintenance activities
