    Assessing the Reach of Health Access Resources in Indianapolis for Populations with Low Income

    Two public health crises that the United States are contending with are diabetes and the prevalence of opioid overdoses, both of which have a significant impact on communities nationwide. Inequities in social conditions contribute to health disparities amidst these diabetes and opioid overdose public health crises nationally and locally. To address these health inequities in Indianapolis, Indiana, the the Purdue University Center for Health Excellence, Quality and Innovation (CHEQI) shaped relationships through their CHAMP (Community Health Access Model Partnerships) services with local food pantries and homeless shelters, providing Indianapolis residents pre-diabetes screening and resources and convenient access to and education on Narcan®. Our primary objective was to characterize the populations served, the geographic reach and outcomes of CHEQI’s CHAMP pre-diabetes and Narcan® services in the Indianapolis area from February 7th to March 22nd, 2024. Data collection consisted of surveys and analyses consisted of descriptive and inferential statistics. A total of 77 individuals met eligibility criteria and completed the pre-diabetes survey across CHAMP pre-diabetes events at community partner sites. Most participants identified as a non-White race (54.55%), under the age of 40 (35.06%) and female (63.6%). Services primarily reached zip codes in the Indianapolis area, and secondarily zip-codes in Lafayette, Indiana. A total of 141 individuals were surveyed across CHAMP Narcan® events. Respondents frequently reported race as Black/African American (38.06%) and being between the ages of 40-49 (27.41%) and female (50.4%). Results suggest that CHEQI serves diverse populations for both services, yet future services should attempt to engage more with those most at risk of pre-diabetes, such as older ages or most at risk of an opioid overdose, such as males

    Coded Bias in Applicant Tracking Systems

    This Tech Justice Lab project explored potential hiring discrimination against transgender and gender-nonconforming job applicants in the hiring process by evaluating the impact of including pronouns in résumés submitted to an applicant tracking system (ATS) platform. The research team began by collecting background information regarding existing discrimination against transgender job applicants and how ATS platforms can reflect and magnify existing biases in the hiring process. A “sock puppet” audit was then conducted by submitting fake user résumés to test the platform’s response. The chosen platform was Jobscan, an applicant-facing software claiming the ability to simulate a résumé review by major corporate ATS platforms. Fake example résumés were gathered from Kaggle and submitted four times each to Jobscan alongside a corresponding job posting: first with no pronouns, then with he/him, she/her, and they/them pronouns. For each submission, data was collected about Jobscan’s feedback regarding the résumé quality and its match to the job listing. One finding was that adding pronouns only had the result of having the résumé listed as too lengthy and as adding “noise” in the résumé, meaning pronouns are seen by ATS as potentially irrelevant information, which could adversely impact the ATS’s assessment of the relevancy of the résumé to the positions. Another result was a lack of evidence to support Jobscan’s claimed ability to tailor feedback to specific companies’ ATS. This was tested by adding a target company’s name to the appropriate field in the platform, which resulted in no changes to the evaluation results

    Using Content Analysis and Text Mining to Examine the Effects of Asynchronous Online Tutoring on Revision

    What do writers do with the feedback they receive? While the answer will vary depending on the writer’s experience and the rhetorical situation, understanding what writers do can provide important information for course redesign and professional development of tutors and instructors. In this first of two manuscripts, the authors examine how first-semester, first-year writing students use responses provided via asynchronous online tutoring (AOT) in revising their assignments. Our primary research question was: What was happening in—and after—those tutorials? We addressed this question by a process of narrowing and refining of data analysis toward increasingly precise inferences as we progressed from automated to coded analysis, which culminated in examining the drafts submitted for tutoring, tutor feedback, and the subsequent assignments submitted for evaluation in the students’ FYW courses. In parallel, we describe the writing analytics–informed methods used to do so in hopes that others will be compelled to replicate or extend this work in their own contexts. We found that students made corresponding revisions at both macro and microstructural levels when provided with directive or declarative feedback, and they made few revisions when tutors provided open-ended questions

    Collaborative Publishing and Multivalent Research: Writing Center Journal Scholarship from 2001 to 2020

    This work examines articles published in the Writing Center Journal between 2001 and 2020 in order to understand more about the publishing, scholarship, and research practices of the field of writing center studies. Through analyzing articles published in the Writing Center Journal between 2001 and 2020, this work makes three contributions to the field. The first contribution of this work is an overview of the shift from scholarship to research in the field of writing center studies. The second contribution of this work is to highlight the growth of collaborative scholarship and research during this time. As is demonstrated in the article, co-authoring is increasingly the norm in the field; there are also many benefits of collaboration and co-authoring in scholarship and research. The third contribution is to show the benefits of multivalent research—research that includes participants at multiple institutions—as well as the growth of multivalent research between 2001 and 2020. Multivalent research can make arguments about the field that research conducted at individual institutions cannot. This work challenges the way research is thought of in the field and provides avenues for strengthening research in the field of writing center studies in the future

    Writing Centers & Racial Justice seeks to answer the question many writing center directors seeking to enact antiracism have: “But how do we DO it?” This edited collection is not a how-to guide but offers strategies, suggestions, and even curriculum for writing center administration. It is broken down into five parts, each tackling a different component of writing center work, such as hiring and retention practices as well as tutor education. It calls on readers to look outside the writing center and begin to expand this work through their institutions and communities, as well as directly calling out professional organizations such as IWCA for their failure to adequately prioritize racial justice. This book is a must-read for any director seeking to move beyond antiracist theory and into antiracist action

    Impacts of Autonomous Truck-Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) on INDOT Work Zone Safety, Mobility, and Worker Productivity

    Work zone safety has been a major concern for many stakeholders including the state Departments of Transportation (DOTs). To prevent DOT workers, especially truck mounted attenuator (TMA) drivers from injuries, the Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) technology is developed. To understand the current testing and deployment status of ATMA, we began with interviews with project managers and researchers in four state DOTs who have experience with the ATMA system. Then, we systematically reviewed, tested, and evaluated the ATMA system in both simulation and real-world environments under various operating scenarios, traffic conditions, and mobile work zone operations. Furthermore, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) workers’ perception of using the ATMA system was also collected. Results from this study suggest that the ATMA system can be successfully implemented in most of the selected INDOT road maintenance activities with good performance. INDOT workers are comfortable to operate the ATMA system after training and welcome this new technology. They believe ATMA can improve both safety and productivity. Longer exposure to the ATMA system is a key factor impacting workers\u27 behavior and evaluation toward ATMA. While the ATMA system has demonstrated significant benefits in saving transportation workers\u27 lives and reducing their risk of injuries, one limitation is that the cost of the system is relatively high at the current stage based on a cost-benefit analysis

    Digitizing Delphi: Educating Audiences Through Virtual Reconstruction

    Implementing a 3D model into a virtual space allows the general public to engage critically with archaeological processes. There are many unseen decisions that go into reconstructing an ancient temple. Analysis of available materials and techniques, predictions of how objects were used, decisions of what sources to reference, puzzle piecing broken remains together, and even educated guesses used to fill gaps in information often go unobserved by the public. This work will educate users about those choices by allowing the side-by-side comparison of conflicting theories on the reconstruction of the Tholos at Delphi, which is an ideal site because of its unique shape, history, and presence of missing information. Data used in the reconstruction includes images taken on site, original archaeological renderings and measurements, and existing theories of the temple’s construction. The final virtual model will allow for side-by-side comparison of these differences. Furthermore, previous 3D representations are generally made for professional audiences and are rarely interactive. This model is also designed to elevate the current archaeological process from static representations into a format as dynamic as the process of reconstruction itself. The next step for this project is to fully integrate and experiment with how users engage with the model in an interactive application. Using modern technology to explore ancient artifacts creates new and exciting processes that show looking back to history can be just as powerful as envisioning the future
