Interview: Katie Jarriel and Allyson Dinwiddie

    No full text
Dr. Katie Jarriel is a Clinical Associate Professor in the John Martinson Honors College, as well as the director of the Computing for Community Collaboratory (C3) Research Generator. Her research combines archaeology and computer modeling to better understand the histories of human– environment interaction. Project oCEANIC (Computing Environmental Adaptation and Navigation in Island Communities) applies these methodologies to a study of traditional maritime navigation in Oceania. Undergraduate student researcher Allyson Dinwiddie, who has contributed to this research, is interviewed along with Jarriel

    LEaPP Vowel Spelling Visual Chart

    Get PDF
The LEaPP Vowel Spelling Visual Chart is a spelling aid that can be used to support learners as they acquire knowledge of basic and advanced vowel spellings. This document contains basic and advanced spellings for vowel sounds in the English language. It also contains a key for educators and a template for learners to tailor to their known spelling patterns

    LEaPP Scope and Sequence

    Get PDF
The LEaPP Scope and Sequence provides a structured guide for explicit and systematic teaching of phonics, morphology, syllabification, and word study. The document is arranged in order from basic concepts (BC) to advanced concepts (AC) to strengthen orthographic mapping skills and support the development of reading and spelling skills. The Scope and Sequence outlines 88 concepts and allows educators to track skills that have been taught and mastered in reading and spelling for each learner. This document can follow the learner as they advance through levels of formal education

    Rebuilding the Spatial Visualization Test

    Get PDF
Literature demonstrates that spatial visualization skills are crucial for students entering engineering and are used as early indicators of success. Historically, studies stated that students of gender or cultural minorities in engineering scored lower than their White, male counterparts. However, recent studies critically question the research approaches used in such studies (Bartlet, 2023; Önder et. al, 2023). We investigate the possible reasons for this score discrepancy and explore the construction of an asset-based spatial visualization assessment. Our work expands the area of spatial visualization development as applied in engineering design, specifically for the scope of marginalized learner contexts. We incorporated lessons on the application of spatial visualization and prototyping, plus a preliminary application of an asset-based spatial visualization test, in conjunction with our Localized Engineering in Displacement (LED) curriculum introduced to students at a LGBTQIA+ transitional support space

Ginger: The Effect of Illustrated Storybooks on Children’s Response and Teachers’ Facilitation in STEM Education

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore children’s and teachers’ responses to the integration of illustrated storybook content into STEM activities in early childhood. The correlation between STEM content and illustrations in children\u27s storybooks conveying scientific information is a crucial aspect that can impact children\u27s learning of STEM. Studies have reported the utilization of storybooks in STEM education for young children (Abanoz & Yabaş, 2022; Pantoya et al., 2015), yet an absence of research has been noted regarding the impact of illustrated storybooks on children\u27s engagement in STEM education. There is substantial research evidence that early childhood teachers have low self-efficacy beliefs about facilitating STEM education (Abanoz & Deniz, 2021; Brenneman et al., 2019). Therefore, providing teachers with rich resources is a critical agenda for early childhood education. On the other hand, illustrated storybooks also have the potential to reflect and shape empathy and action regarding understanding difficult situations and to raise generations beware of and overcome these situations (Crawford et al., 2019)
