Farm Resilience, Management Practices, and Producer Sentiment: Segmenting US Farms Using Machine Learning Algorithms
Farm managers possess a broad spectrum of capabilities, ranging from tech-savvy, strategically focused managers to those grappling with operational challenges. Our study examines survey data from 403 US commercial producers in order to identify subsets of producers who differ in terms of resilience, management practices, producer sentiment, and other farm characteristics. Utilizing various supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, we uncover key farm characteristics that capture the most pronounced variations in survey responses. We then cluster the dataset using these key variables, maximizing separation between clusters and minimizing differences within clusters using Ward’s hierarchical clustering. Fisher’s exact tests are implemented to determine the statistical significance of differences in farm characteristics across the constructed clusters. Results confirm that resilience to strategic risk, managerial ability, producer sentiment, technology adoption, and demographics all vary significantly among commercial farms. In particular, we observe a trade-off among farms in regard to operators’ management abilities and their farms’ resilience. Farms with the highest resilience levels tend to show slightly lower managerial abilities. Conversely, farms with the strongest managerial abilities exhibit somewhat poorer farm resilience. The third group of farms, which encompasses 49% of our sample, displays the lowest levels of farm resilience, precision agriculture technology adoption, and managerial abilities and has the weakest growth expectations
#35 Understanding in Lao
This piece is a celebration, an interpretation, and translation of Lao words and of the Lao language as poetry. This poem dissects and discuss the differences between how the word understand is conceptualized and embodied in the Lao language versus English. Further, it shows how in Lao, there are even deeper nuances between what it means to know versus to understand in Lao
Innovative STEM Learning through Solar Oven Design: Promoting Creativity and Teamwork in STEM Education
STEM education benefits significantly from integrating design-based learning (DBL) which fosters student creativity and teamwork. This research brief examines how solar oven design projects for K-12 students that involve DBL promote students\u27 creative skills and teamwork. A literature review was done to investigate how solar oven design activities impacted student learning. Research has shown that students improve creativity and teamwork when these activities are carried out using DBL strategies
Supporting Black Math Educators: A Call to Action
Supporting Black math educators is crucial for fostering a more equitable and inclusive educational environment. Some research has shown that ongoing support from administration, various types of professional development (PD) opportunities, and mentoring equip Black math educators with the tools they need to be successful and grow with their educational pursuits (Frank et al., 2021; Moseley, 2018; Sun, 2018). This research brief will define the meaning of support for Black math educators, identify ways in which these supports can be effective, and suggest additional research necessary to continue to push the needle towards a more inclusive educational environment
Terrorists, Spies, and Diplomatic Crises: The Birth of Morocco’s Multimedia Prison Literature
This article captures the literary shift that accompanied the transformation of the nature of political imprisonment in Morocco in the last twenty years. Focusing on the new victims of state violence, who fall within two categories: prisoners accused of terrorism and those accused of heinous sexual crimes, this article argues that the emergence of these new criminal profiles has led to the establishment of a transnational “Multimedia Prison Literature” (MPL). Drawing on the cases of Ali Arras, a Belgian-Moroccan whom Spain delivered to Morocco for terrorist charges, and Mohamed Hajib, a German-Moroccan citizen whom Germany extradited to his country of origin also because of accusations of terrorism, this article reveals the changed landscape of Moroccan political imprisonment, which now includes Euro-Moroccans whose basic human rights have been violated in the process. In addition to Arras and Hajib, the article investigates the writings of Driss Radi, the father of Omar Radi, a journalist who was accused of and sentenced to jail for a sexual crime. I argue that Driss Radi, Ali Arras, and Mohamed Hajib have used social media and audiovisual platforms to mobilize empathy and reveal the truth about the different facets of their imprisonment (Arras and Hajib) or that of their relatives (Radi). Drawing on the infinite communicative and writing possibilities enabled by social, multimedia platforms, these MPL makers have successfully garnered large following and made prison writing into an interactive, transnational genre which should be studied in conjunction with the canonical prison literature that was produced about the infamous Years of Lead (1956-1999)

An Overview of Aeronautical Occurrences Related to Safety in Brazil and the United States
This essay presents a comparative analysis of the aeronautical occurrences registered in Brazil and in the United States from 2012 to 2021. The study was carried out through several segmentations of the occurrences and the aircrafts involved. Statistical data from the websites of Brazil’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents and the US National Transportation Safety Board was used for the comparative analysis. The evolution of the number of aircraft registered in each country was evaluated, and although the number of aircraft in the United States is much higher than in Brazil, the US occurrence rate is lower. Also, the occurrences in the United States have greater damage and a higher fatality rate than in Brazil. Therefore, it is suggested that a more detailed study is needed about the factors that lead to greater severity in the US occurrences than in Brazil
If the Walls Could Speak: Artwork for Representational Library Spaces
Artwork featuring diverse styles, cultures, and perspectives can promote inclusivity and representation within library spaces. Our library has partnered with a local Art Foundation to introduce artwork from local artists that reflect the diversity of our student population. Rather than a centrally located exhibition, the art has been integrated into the whole library building to be accessible and inspire reflection and recognition. This lightning talk briefly explains the collaborative project and the value of art in a library space to express diverse voices explored through visual storytelling
