Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Resveratrol on the Radiotherapy-Induced Neuroinflammation
Objective: Damage in the central nervous system caused by cranial radiotherapy (RT) has been linked to neuroinflammation due to microglial activation. Evidence reveals that resveratrol (RES) exerts neuroprotective effects by inhibiting neuroinflammation. There are limited studies investigating the effects of RES on microglia-related neuroinflammation developed as a result of RT. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of RES on RT-induced microglial- related neuroinflammation. Materials and Methods: Rats were simple randomly divided into three groups. Sham (SH) group received ethanol solution on the 1st-14th days of the study. RT group was applied a single dose of total cranial 15 Gy X radiation on the 7th day of the study. RES group was administered a dose of 20 mg/kg on the 1st-14th days of the study and a single dose of total cranial 15 Gy X radiation on the 7th day of the study. The brain tissues removed at the end of the experiment were subjected to histological techniques and procedures for histological and immunohistochemical examinations. The data were evaluated statistically. Results: RT administration caused histological changes such as neuron degeneration and edema in the brain tissue. In addition, RT administration induced a significant increase in CD68 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-?) immunoreactivity. In the RES+RT group, it was observed that histological changes were alleviated, and CD68 and TNF-? immunoreactivities were decreased. In addition, a significant increase in the immunoreactivity of autophagy-related proteins was detected in this group. Conclusion: Evaluating together all the data, it was revealed that RES attenuates microglia- mediated neuroinflammation and neuronal degeneration

Basal cell skin cancers: Retrospective analysis of 67 cases
Background Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer and originates from the basal layer of the epidermis. It is most common in the head and neck region. It usually grows slowly and rarely metastasizes. The gold standard treatment is surgical excision. Aims In this study, it was aimed to discuss the demographic and medical data of patients treated with the diagnosis of BCC. Patients/Methods Sixty-seven tumors of 55 patients who were operated for BCC in our clinic between 2016 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and medical data were analyzed. Results The tumor was most commonly localized to the nose. The most common (50%) histological type was the nodular type. Recurrence occurred in one of our patients (1.5%). Surgical margin positivity was observed in six patients. Conclusions Basal cell carcinomas are most common in the head and neck region. Its frequency increases with age and is more common in men. In our patients, 98.5% of the tumors were located in the head and neck, and 89.5% were over 60 years of age. Nodular is the most common type of BCC, and the most common nodular type was detected in our study. Surgical margin positivity is observed between 9% and 37.2% after surgery, and the recurrence rate is around 5%. In our study, surgical margin positivity was 9% and recurrence was 1.5%. Evaluating the excision margins carefully in a well-lit environment and taking into account cosmetic concerns, obtaining an adequately intact surgical margin in one go may lead to the ideal treatment result
Nutritional characteristic of children with inflammatory bowel disease in the nationwide inflammatory bowel disease registry from the Mediterranean region
Background/objectives: We analyzed the nationwide pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (PIBD) registry (1998–2016), to evaluate the nutritional status at the time of diagnosis. Subjects/methods: Nine types of nutritional status by the combination of weight-for-length (2 years) and length/height-for-age with three categories (2 SD) were described. Malnutrition was defined by WHO criteria. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for malnutrition. Results: In total, 824 IBD patients (498 Ulcerative colitis (UC); 289 Crohn’s Disease (CD); 37 Indeterminate Colitis (IC); 412 male; the median age 12.5 years) were eligible. The prevalence of eutrophy, wasting/thinness, stunting, overweight, tall stature, concurrent wasting/thinness and stunting, tall stature with overweight, tall stature with wasting/thinness, and short stature with overweight were 67.4%, 14.9%, 6.6%, 3.1%, 3.2%, 3.3%, 1.1%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively. The prevalence of malnutrition was 32.7%, indicating a higher prevalence in CD (p 10 years), prepubertal stage, severe disease activity, perianal involvement, and high C reactive protein level were independently associated with malnutrition in pediatric IBD. Conclusion: We showed the frequency of nutritional impairment in PIBD. The percentage of overweight subjects was lower than the other studies. The age of onset, disease activity, CRP level, perianal involvement, and pubertal stage were associated with a higher risk for developing malnutrition. Our results also confirmed that CD patients are particularly vulnerable to nutritional impairment. Design of Robust PI Controllers for Interval Plants With Worst-Case Gain and Phase Margin Specifications in Presence of Multiple Crossover Frequencies
This article deals with the computation of robustly performing Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers for interval plants, where the performance measures are represented by the worst-case Gain Margin (GM) and Phase Margin (PM) specifications, in the event of multiple Phase Crossover Frequencies (PCFs) and/or Gain Crossover Frequencies (GCFs). The multiplicity of PCFs and GCFs poses a considerable complication in frequency-domain control design methods. The paper is a continuation of the authors' previous work that applied the robust PI controller design approach to a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). This preceding application represented the system with a single PCF and a single GCF, but the current article focuses on a case of multiple PCFs and GCFs. The determination of a robust performance region in the P-I plane is based on the stability/performance boundary locus method and the sixteen plant theorem. In the illustrative example, a robust performance region is obtained for an experimental oblique wing aircraft that is mathematically modeled as the unstable interval plant. The direct application of the method results in the (pseudo-)GM and (pseudo-)PM regions that illogically protrude from the stability region. Consequently, a deeper analysis of the selected points in the P-I plane shows that the calculated GM and PM boundary loci are related to the numerically correct values, but that the results may be misleading, especially for the loci outside the stability region, due to the multiplicity of the PCFs and GCFs. Nevertheless, the example eventually shows that the important parts of the GM and PM regions, i.e., the parts that have an impact on the final robust performance region, are valid. Thus, the method is applicable even to unstable interval plants and to the control loops with multiple PCFs and GCFs
The effect of nursing care satisfaction on pain and anxiety levels of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery in the early postoperative period
In our study, we aimed to examine the effect of nursing care satisfaction on the pain and anxiety levels of patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of patients who underwent surgery in the orthopedic clinic of a training and research hospital, and they were in the early postoperative period. Patient information form, Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used in data collection. In this study, we found that 41.2% of the orthopedic patients were between the ages of 36 and 50, and 60.4% of them were women. Both nursing care satisfaction and anxiety levels were found to be higher in women than men (p<0.05). The highest satisfaction rate was found among patients aged 18-35 years old, and the highest anxiety level was found in patients over the age of 66. In our study, we found that higher anxiety levels increased pain intensity, and a high level of nursing care satisfaction could be seen in various pain and anxiety levels. Our study showed that nursing care satisfaction was affected by pain and anxiety in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. In addition, it showed that pain and anxiety trigger each other. Clinicians should be aware of the negative effects of pain and anxiety on postoperative recovery. Strategies to increase nursing care satisfaction should be developed
Religious Rituals Performed by Muslim Palliative Caregivers in Turkey During the Grieving Process: An Exploratory Study
This study identifies the religious and cultural mourning rituals used by family members who provided care for palliative care patients. The study was conducted between January and February 2021. The research population was composed of family and community caregivers for patients in a palliative care unit at a hospital. The sample size was 245 people. An examination of the food rituals of caregivers during the mourning period showed that 47.3% thought it was appropriate to cook at the deceased patient's residence for 7 days during the mourning period, 59.6% read Mawleed (prayer ritual) on the 3rd day after death and 56.3% offered halwa (food ritual) on the 3rd day. An examination of the religious rituals of the caregivers during the mourning period revealed that 97.6% prayed on the first day, 59.6% recited prayers for the lost one on the first 'Eid after a death, and 83.3% read the Qur'an on the anniversary of the death. The study revealed that the majority of caregivers carried out religious and cultural rituals

The palladium-based complexes bearing 1,3-dibenzylbenzimidazolium with morpholine, triphenylphosphine, and pyridine derivate ligands: synthesis, characterization, structure and enzyme inhibitions
The palladium-based complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand have long attracted attention as active catalysts for many catalytic reactions. Recently, the biological activities of these complexes, which are stable to air and moisture, have also been wondered. With the aim, we report the synthesis of a series of (NHC) Pd(Br2)(L) complexes (NHC: 1,3-dibenzylbenzimidazolium, L: morpholine, triphenylphosphine, pyridine, 3-chloropyridine, and 2-aminopyridine). All complexes were characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), FTIR spectroscopic and elemental analysis techniques. In addition, the single crystal structures of the complex 3, 4, and 6 were determined through single crystal x-ray crystallographic method. Furthermore, the carbonic anhydrase I and II isoenzymes (hCAs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition effects of these palladium-based complexes bearing NHC ligand were investigated. They showed highly potent inhibition effect with Ki values are between 10.06 +/- 1.49-68.56 +/- 11.53 nM for hCA I isoenzyme, 7.74 +/- 0.66 to 49.39 +/- 6.50 nM for hCA II isoenzyme and 22.83 +/- 3.21 to 64.09 +/- 9.05 nM for AChE enzyme.Dokuz Eylul University for the use of the Oxford Rigaku Xcalibur Eos Diffractometer [2010.KB.FEN.13]This work was supported by the Dokuz Eylul University for the use of the Oxford Rigaku Xcalibur Eos Diffractometer (purchased under University Research Grant No: 2010.KB.FEN.13)
