Tunnel/Layer Composite Na0.44MnO2 Cathode Material with Enhanced Structural Stability via Cobalt Doping for Sodium-Ion Batteries
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are the most promising alternativeto lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their low cost and environmentalfriendliness; therefore, enhancing the performance of SIBs'components is crucial. Although most of the studies have focused onsingle-phase cathode electrodes, these materials have difficulty inmeeting the requirements in practice. At this point, composite materialsshow superior performance due to balancing different structures andare offered as an alternative to single-phase cathodes. In this study,we synthesized a Na0.44MnO2/Na0.7MnO2.05 composite material in a single step with cobaltsubstitution. Changes in the crystal structure and the physical andelectrochemical properties of the composite and bare structures werestudied. We report that even if the initial capacity is slightly lower, the rate and cyclic performance of the 1% Co-substituted compositesample (CO10) are superior to the undoped Na0.44MnO2 (NMO) and 5% Co-substituted (CO50) samples after 100 cycles. The results show that with the composite cathode phase transformationsare suppressed, structural degradation is prevented, and better batteryperformance is achieved.Inonu University Scientific Research Project Unit (IUBAP) [FDK-2017/678]; Ankara University Institute of Accelerator Technologies (TARLA) [:2006K-12047]; Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) Research Institute; Horizon 2020 pilot NFFA.EU project [ID-568, PIF-2013-21]; Istanbul Medeniyet University [F-GAP-2019-1498]E.O. and S.A. would like to thank the Inonu University Scientific Research Project Unit (IUBAP) (project no: FDK-2017/678) for financial support. Whole-Cell Postbiotics: an Innovative Approach for Extending the Shelf Life and Controlling Major Foodborne Pathogens in Chicken Breast Fillets
The current research was designed to compare the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of cell-free supernatant (CFS) and whole-cell postbiotic (WCP) and reveal the efficacy of WCP in combination with chitosan and thymol for extending the shelf life and inhibiting emerging foodborne pathogens in chicken breast fillets during storage at 4 degrees C. For this purpose, pH, organic acids, titratable acidity, antioxidant capacity assays (FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH), free amino acids (FAA), free fatty acids (FFA), total phenolic content, individual phenolics, color properties, and volatiles of CFS and WCP were compared. The levels of some organic acids, FAA, titratable acidity, and total phenolic content (TPC) of WCP were higher than CFS (P < 0.05). Almost similar inhibition zones (7.82 to 10.43 mm) were recorded between the CFS and WCP against some pathogenic bacteria including S. Typhimurium, E. coli O157:H7, and L. monocytogenes. In chicken breast fillets, the total viable count of the control group reached the upper limit (7.0 log(10)) on the 6th day, while WCP (50%) + thymol (0.5%) + chitosan (0.5%) treatment provided a shelf life extension of 9 days (P < 0.05). Additionally, this treatment provided 2.35, 2.35, and 1.96 log(10) CFU/g reductions in S. Typhimurium, E. coli O157:H7, and L. monocytogenes counts on the initial day, respectively (P < 0.05). The result of this study revealed that WCPs can be easily prepared without any changes in antibacterial efficacy and used in food matrices to control major foodborne pathogens and extended the shelf life by retarding microbial and chemical deteriorations
Birth outcomes in pregnant women with epilepsy: A Nationwide multicenter study from Turkiye
ObjectiveThe present study was aimed at investigating the effects of anti-seizure medications (ASMs), patient demographic characteristics, and the seizure type and frequency on the development of congenital malformations (CMs) in the infants of pregnant women with epilepsy (PWWE).MethodsPWWE followed up at the neurology outpatient clinic of 21 centers between 2014 and 2019 were included in this prospective study. The follow-up of PWWE was conducted using structured, general pregnant follow-up forms prepared by the Pregnancy and Epilepsy Study Committee. The newborns were examined by a neonatologist after delivery and at 1 and 3 months postpartum.ResultsOf the infants of 759 PWWE, 7.2% had CMs, with 5.6% having major CMs. Polytherapy, monotherapy, and no medications were received by 168 (22.1%), 548 (72.2 %), and 43 (5.7 %) patients, respectively. CMs were detected at an incidence of 2.3% in infants of PWWE who did not receive medication, 5.7% in infants of PWWE who received monotherapy, and 13.7% in infants of PWWE who received polytherapy. The risk of malformation was 2.31-fold (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.48-4.61, p < .001) higher in infants of PWWE who received polytherapy. Levetiracetam was the most frequently used seizure medication as monotherapy, with the highest incidence of CMs occurring with valproic acid (VPA) use (8.5%) and the lowest with lamotrigine use (2.1%). The incidence of CMs was 5% at a carbamazepine dose <700 mg, 10% at a carbamazepine dose & GE;700 mg, 5.5% at a VPA dose <750 mg, and 14.8% at a VPA dose =750 mg. Thus the risk of malformation increased 2.33 times (p = .041) in infants of PWWE receiving high-dose ASMs.SignificanceBirth outcomes of PWWE receiving and not receiving ASMs were evaluated. The risk of CMs occurrence was higher, particularly in infants of PWWE using VPA and receiving polytherapy. The incidence of CMs was found to be lower in infants of PWWE receiving lamotrigine
An overview of FOPID controller design in v-domain: design methodologies and robust controller performance
The complex v-plane is an emerging design domain for fractional order control system design. Recently, several works demonstrated the advantages of tuning FOPID controllers in v-plane. These approaches essentially perform the minimum angle pole placement to a target angle within the stability region of the v-plane and facilitate fractional order control system design tasks because of inherently guaranteed stabilisation of fractional order transfer functions. Accordingly, the optimal FOPID controller tuning problem can be simplified to placement of minimum angle system pole to a target point within the stability region of the v-plane. After reviewing previous v-domain design works, authors investigate prominent target points that can result in improved FOPID control performance for the v-domain design task. The consideration of target points in polar coordinates can provide two design parameters (angle and magnitude), which can convey essential system knowledge associated with the stability and control performance of FOPID control systems. In this perspective, effects of minimum angle pole positions on control performance indices are investigated in detail, and some prominent target points to manage FOPID design in v-domain have been reported. The v-domain design examples are illustrated to reveal the effects of the sampled pole positions on the robust control performance
Vitamin D polymorphism in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Tüm katılımcılardan alınan venöz kan örneklerinden önce DNA izolasyonu yapıldı, ardından polimeraz zincir reaksiyonu ile Fok I ve Taq I genotipleri belirlendi. Anahtar Kelimeler: Karpal tünel sendromu, polimorfizm, tek nükleotid, vitamin d reseptörüObjective: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with CTS, and vitamin D supplementation may improve symptoms and electrophysiological findings in CTS patients. Vitamin D shows its effects through VDR. Common polymorphisms in the VDR gene have been identified that can modify vitamin D metabolism and have been shown to be associated with many diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between CTS and VDR gene polymorphisms, Fok I and Taq I. Materials and Method: This study was carried out on 70 CTS patients and 70 healthy controls. The severity of CTS was determined by EMG and the patients were divided into 3 groups as mild, moderate and severe CTS. DNA isolation was performed from venous blood samples taken from all participants, then Fok I and Taq I genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction. The Fok I and Taq I genotypes and allele frequencies of the participants were first compared between the CTS and control groups. Then, the relationship between polymorphisms and disease severity in the CTS group was examined. Results: The mean age was 47.39 ± 10.3 in the CTS group and 29.76 ± 8.36 years in the control group. In the CTS group, 81.4% were women, 18.6% were men, and in the control group, 44.3% were women and 55.7% were men. There was a statistically significant difference in favor of CTS in terms of age and female gender (p0.05). Conclusions: There is no relationship between CTS and VDR gene Fok I and Taq I polymorphisms in the Turkish population. Comparison of thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy and ultrasonography results
Thyroid nodules are one of the most common health problems in the community. Although most of the nodules are benign, Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is requested due to malignancy concerns. In this research, the aim was to make a comparison of the results of thyroid ultrasonography (USG) and FNAB for thyroid nodules. This study was conducted retrospectively on the data of 532 patients. Detail Edu ultrasonographic assessment was conducted before the FNAB procedure and FNAB was performed by an endocrinology specialist. FNAB results and Thyroid USG features were compared, and thyroid FNAB results were graded using the classification of World Health Organization Bethesda-2017. The average age of the individuals included in the research was 49.99 & PLUSMN; 13.65 (min = 18-max = 97). According to the 2017 Bethesda classification, 74.6% of FNAB results were benign, 16% follicular lesion of undated mined significance or A type of undated mined significance, 0.9% were malignant, and 1.1% were suspicious for malignancy. When USG findings were compared according to FNAB results, it was found that malignant lesions were significantly higher in single nodules (non- cystic and non- mixed lesions). Lesions with a single nodule on USG were found to be 3.6 times more likely to be malignant (OR 95% CI: 1.172-11.352). The gold standard method for the diagnosis the presence of thyroid nodules is thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy with ultrasound guidance. Taking samples from the correct nodule and component increases its value. The presence of a single nodule from the thyroid USG features was found to be an important predictor of malignancy according to the biopsy results
Evaluation of the Association of VDR rs2228570 Polymorphism with Elite Track and Field Athletes' Competitive Performance
The present study aimed to examine the vitamin D receptor (VDR), rs2228570 polymorphism, and its effect on elite athletes' performance. A total of 60 elite athletes (31 sprint/power and 29 endurance) and 20 control/ physically inactive, aged 18-35, voluntarily participated in the study. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) score scale was used to determine the performance levels of the athletes' personal best (PB). Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed by the genomic DNA isolated from the peripheral blood of the participants. Sports type, sex, and competitive performance were chosen as the parameters to compare within and between the groups by linear regression models. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the CC, TC, and TT genotypes within and between the groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, our results underlined that there were no statistically significant differences for the association of rs2228570 polymorphism with PBs within the groups of the (p > 0.05) athletes. The genetic profile in the selected gene was similar in elite endurance, sprint athletes, and in controls, suggesting that rs2228570 polymorphism does not determine competitive performance in the analyzed athlete cohort.Gazi University Rectorate (Scientific Research Projects Coordination's Unit) [TCD-2021-7116]This research received no external funding
The diagnostic value of electroencephalography in pediatric patients presenting with syncope
Aim: In the investigation of the diagnosis of pediatric syncope, it was aimed to evaluate the rate of abnormal EEG findings and the diagnostic yield of the EEG in the electroen- cephalography (EEG) taken following their neurological examination. Materials and Methods: EEG records of 332 patients younger than 18 years of age who presented to the pediatric neurology outpatient clinic with syncope were retrospectively analyzed. The EEG results were classified as normal and abnormal. Based on the abnor- mal EEG results, four subgroups were formed as focal epileptiform discharge, generalized epileptiform discharge, focal slowing and generalized slowing. Abnormal EEG results were categorized according to age and gender. Results: Of the cases included in the study, 195 (58.7%) were female and 137 (41.3%) were male. The mean age of the patients was calculated as 12.67±3.21 years. Analysis of the EEG results revealed that 92.5% were normal and 7.53% were abnormal. The most common abnormal EEG finding was focal slowing, which was detected in 12 (3.6%) patients, followed by focal epileptiform discharge which was detected in eight (2.4%) and generalized epileptiform discharge which was detected in five (1.5%) patients. Conclusion: EEG should not be routinely performed to evaluate the diagnosis of pedi- atric syncope. Therefore, EEG should be performed only on patients to be selected based on their medical history and the results of their neurological examination. In this way, it will be possible to derive more benefits out of EEG and to reduce the associated medical costs
