Polymers for IOL systems
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are materials designed for use in the treatment of a problematic natural lens. Main function of intraocular lenses is correction of refractive indexes. It is important that the material that will be used in intraocular lenses should be appropriate for the natural crystalline lenses of the eye in terms of design and feasibility. IOL materials should include the homogeneity, refractive index, and transparency properties of natural eyepieces. Since intraocular lenses contain more than one component, the synthesis of polymeric materials used in their production, polymerization and hardening techniques, and optical and mechanical properties direct the success of lens treatment. In this section, polymeric materials used in terms of design strategies to ensure effective treatment management of intraocular lenses are discussed. Also, the biocompatibility, restriction, and future trends of polymeric materials used in the manufacture of IOLs are discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
The effect of Ramadan fasting on mental health and some hormonal levels in healthy males
BackgroundMillions of Muslims around the world fast during the holy month of Ramadan as a requirement of their religion Islam. Studies have reported varying effects of Ramadan fasting on mental health and various hormones. This study aimed to examine the effects of Ramadan fasting on mental health and plasma Leptin, Ghrelin, Neuropeptide Y (NPY), Growth Hormone levels in healthy individuals, and to evaluate the possible relationship between their hormone values and scale scores. Male healthcare professionals working at a university hospital without any psychiatric disease were included in the study. In the last week before Ramadan and in the first week after Ramadan, participants' blood samples were taken at 8.00 in the morning after 12 h of fasting, taking into account the release pattern and pulsatile release of these hormones in order to measure plasma Leptin, Ghrelin, NPY and Growth Hormone levels. Simultaneously, a sociodemographic data form, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Scale of Dimensions of Interpersonal Relationships were applied to participants.ResultsThe sample of the study included a total of 40 healthcare professionals. Participants' BSI interpersonal sensitivity and phobic anxiety subscales scores and their general severity and positive symptom distress index scores decreased significantly after Ramadan compared to those measured before Ramadan. (p < 0.001, p = 0.020, p = 0.042, p = 0.006 respectively). Also participants' ghrelin levels increased significantly after Ramadan compared to those measured before Ramadan (p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe effects of Ramadan fasting on mental health may be mediated by some psychoneuroendocrine mechanisms. In order to elucidate these mechanisms that mediate the effect of Ramadan fasting on mental health, there is a need for better-structured studies with larger samples and more variables
Associations of Quality of Family Communication and Well-Being with Marital Attitudes among Turkish Emerging Adults
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between Turkish emerging adults' marital attitudes, and their quality of family communication and well-being. The study participants consisted of 386 (266 female, 120 male) never-married emerging adults, selected by the method of convenience sampling. Hierarchical multiple linear regression technique was used for data analysis. The results revealed that emerging adults' quality of family communication and well-being were both predictors of marital attitudes. A higher level of well-being and quality of family communication were associated with more positive attitudes toward marriage

Evaluation of risk factors for necrotic tissue resections in elderly patients with groin hernia
Aim: To reveal the relationships between patient findings and tissue resection in elderly patients. Materials and methods: Between September 2020 and September 2022 three hundred eighty four patients over the age of 60 who were operated with the diagnosis of groin hernia were retrospectively analyzed. Gender, age, height, weight and body mass index value, groin and inguinal hernia types, hernia sides, primary or recurrent cases, hernia sac content, incarceration, tissue necrosis and resection presence, and accompanying pathologies were recorded. These findings were compared and evaluated in order to determine the relationships between patient findings and tissue resection, and the findings at risk for tissue resection. Results: Of the patients in the study, 352 (91.7%) were male and 32 (8.3%) were female. The mean age, height, weight and BMI were 67.48 +/- 5.893 years, 169.27 +/- 6.113 cm, 73.28 +/- 7.878 kg and 25,566 +/- 2.3518 kg/m2, respectively. There were 369 inguinal, 15 femoral, 285 indirect, 84 direct, 312 primary, and 72 recurrent hernias. Incarceration was present in 65 (16.9%) patients, 19 (4.9%) of these patients underwent resection due to tissue necrosis (twelve omentum and seven small intestine). Tissue resection was 3.1% in male, 25% in female, 4.3% in inguinal, 20% in femoral, 5.6% in indirect, 0% in direct, 3.5% in primary and 11.1% in recurrent hernias. Tissue resections were significantly higher in females, femoral hernias, indirect inguinal hernias and recurrent cases (p<0.05). Conclusions: We can say that female gender, femoral, indirect and recurrent hernias are important risk factors for tissue resection in elderly patients
Microfluidic Devices for Precision Nanoparticle Production
In recent years, the field of drug delivery has seen a significant shift towards the exploration and utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) as versatile carriers for therapeutic agents. With its ability to provide exact control over NPs’ characteristics, microfluidics has emerged as a potent platform for the efficient and controlled synthesis of NPs. Microfluidic devices designed for precise fluid manipulation at the micro-scale offer a unique platform for tailoring NP properties, enabling enhanced control over NP properties such as size, morphology, and size distribution while ensuring high batch-to-batch reproducibility. Microfluidics can be used to produce liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, polymer-based NPs, and lipid-polymer hybrid NPs, as well as a variety of inorganic NPs such as silica, metal, metal oxide, quantum dots, and carbon-based NPs, offering precise control over composition and surface properties. Its unique precision in tailoring NP properties holds great promise for advancing NP-based drug delivery systems in both clinical and industrial settings. Although challenges with large-scale production still remain, microfluidics offers a transformative approach to NP synthesis. In this review, starting from the historical development of microfluidic systems, the materials used to create the systems, microfabrication methods, and system components will be discussed in order to provide the reader with an overview of microfluidic systems. In the following, studies on the fabrication of nanoparticles such as lipid NPs, polymeric NPs, and inorganic NPs in microfluidic devices are included. © 2023 by the authors
Four-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography and fragmented QRS in detection of early left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism
Background: Thyroid disorders are associated with many cardiovascular risk factors. The importance of thyroid hormones in the pathophysiology of heart failure is underlined by the European guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology. However, the role of subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) in subclinical left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is not entirely clear. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 56 SCH patients and 40 healthy volunteers. The 56 SCH group was divided into two subgroups depending on the presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS). In both groups, left ventricular global area strain (LV-GAS), global radial strain (GRS), global longitudinal strain (GLS), and global circumferential strain (GCS) were obtained with four-dimensional (4D) echocardiography. Results: GAS, GRS, GLS, and GCS values were significantly different in SCH patients and in healthy volunteers. GLS and GAS values were lower in the fQRS+ than in the fQRS- group (-17.06 +/- 1.00 vs. -19.08 +/- 1.71, p < .001, and -26.61 +/- 2.38 vs. -30.61 +/- 2.57, p < .001, respectively). ProBNP was positively correlated with LV-GLS (r = 0.278, p = .006) and LV-GAS (r = 0.357, p < .001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that fQRS was an independent predictor of LV-GAS. Conclusions: 4D strain echocardiography may be helpful for the prediction of early cardiac dysfunction in patients with SCH. The presence of fQRS may be an indicator of subclinical LV dysfunction in SCH

Effect of septoplasty on left ventricular functions, systemic immune inflammatory index and electrocardiographic parameters as arrhythmia predictors
Anahtar Kelimeler:4B Ekokardiyografi, Frontal QRS-T Açısı, Nasal Septal Deviasyon,Septoplasti,Strain,Introduction: The deformities that occur in different forms in the bone and cartilage septum that divides the nasal cavity are called nasal septum deviation. Nasal septal deviation is one of the common causes of upper airway obstruction, and its relationship with some electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and laboratory parameters has been investigated in previous studies. Obstructive respiratory events have been shown to cause intermittent hypoxemia, increased ventricular load, and impaired sympathovagal balance. The frontal plane QRS-T angle is the difference between the QRS axis and T axis values in the standard 12-lead ECG. This difference, which indicates the deviation in the direction of depolarization and repolarization in the ventricle, has been shown to be associated with arrhythmias. In this study, we investigated whether there was a difference before and after septoplasty, especially in terms of arrhythmia and subclinical left ventricular functions in patients who underwent septoplasty for NSD. Method: The study included 70 patients with NSD who were candidates for septoplasty, aged 18-65 years, who were eligible for inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the data of this group at the 3rd month follow-up after septoplasty. Preoperative and postoperative socio-demographic characteristics, laboratory data, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic evaluations of the group were examined. In conventional echocardiographic examination, right and left ventricular systolic and diastolic diameters, estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure measurements were evaluated.Left ventricular diastolic and systolic volumes, left ventricular ejection fraction, stroke volume and cardiac output were evaluated with 4-dimensional echocardiography. In addition, left ventricular strains were evaluated with 4D Strain echocardiography. Results: In the study, significant dilatation was observed in the biventricular and biatrial diameters of the patients after septoplasty in conventional echocardiography. Left ventricular ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume, stroke volume and cardiac vii output values evaluated by 4D echocardiography increased after septoplasty. A statistically significant increase was observed in the left ventricular strain values(Global Area, Radial, Circumferential, Longitudinal strain) after septoplasty compared to the values before septoplasty. In our study in addition to conventional echocardiographic parameters, we showed improvement in LV 4B strain values, which is an indicator of subclinical cardiac dysfunction, after septoplasty in patients with NSD.In addition, it was observed in the study that the fQRS-T angle decreased after septoplasty. In the analyzes performed, a significant correlation was observed between Left ventricular Global Field Strain change and Frontal QRS-T angle change. Conclusion: We determined that the frontal plane QRS-T angle can be used as an early indicator of myocardial dysfunction in patients with NSD. We think that our study will contribute to the literature as it evaluates the changes in cardiac functions in patients with NSD and correlates them with easily accessible ECG parameters.
