Enhancing high sensitive hydrogen detection of Bi2O3 nanoparticle decorated TiO2 nanotubes

    No full text
An electrochemical anodization technique was used to create a hydrogen gas sensor based on TiO2 nanotubes decorated with bismuth oxide (Bi2O3). Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate (Bi(NO3)3 center dot 5H2O) was employed as the source material for Bi2O3. The resulting nanotubes were annealed at 500 degrees C, revealing an amorphous structure with a mixed phase of rutile and anatase. Platinum (Pt) electrodes, with a thickness of 100 nm, were coated onto the Bi2O3@TiO2/Ti and TiO2/Ti structures for sensor testing. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to examine the structural, morphological, and surface properties of the Bi2O3@TiO2 and TiO2 nanotubes. The hydrogen sensing properties of the Pt/Bi2O3@TiO2/Ti and Pt/TiO2/Ti devices were evaluated at room temperature, with hydrogen concentrations ranging from 1000 ppm to 10 %. The I-V characterization of the sensor devices under 1 % H2 exhibited typical Schottky-type behavior. Remarkably, the Pt/Bi2O3@TiO2/Ti structure demonstrated a sensor response 1 x 107 times higher than that of in a dry air environment when the same voltage was applied under up to 1 % H2 conditions. The uniform dispersion of Bi2O3 nanoparticles throughout the structure contributed to the enhanced sensor response in the presence of H2.Malatya Turgut Ozal University Scientific Research Unit of Turkey (BAP) [2022/06]This study was funded by Malatya Turgut Ozal University Scientific Research Unit of Turkey (BAP, Project Number: 2022/06)

Expert opinion on screening, diagnosis and management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a multidisciplinary approach

    No full text
The proposed expert opinion aimed to address the current knowledge on conceptual, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and to provide a guidance document to assist clinicians for the best practice in DPN care. The participating experts consider the suspicion of the disease by clinicians as a key factor in early recognition and diagnosis, emphasizing an improved awareness of the disease by the first-admission or referring physicians. The proposed screening and diagnostic algorithm involves the consideration of DPN in a patient with prediabetes or diabetes who presents with neuropathic symptoms and/or signs of neuropathy in the presence of DPN risk factors, with careful consideration of laboratory testing to rule out other causes of distal symmetric peripheral neuropathy and referral for a detailed neurological work-up for a confirmative test of either small or large nerve fiber dysfunction in atypical cases. Although, the first-line interventions for DPN are currently represented by optimized glycemic control (mainly for type 1 diabetes) and multifactorial intervention (mainly for type 2 diabetes), there is a need for individualized pathogenesis-directed treatment approaches for DPN. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) seems to be an important first-line pathogenesis-directed agent, given that it is a direct and indirect antioxidant that works with a strategy targeted directly against reactive oxygen species and indirectly in favor of endogenous antioxidant capacity for improving DPN conditions. There is still a gap in existing research in the field, necessitating well-designed, robust, multicenter clinical trials with sensitive endpoints and standardized protocols to facilitate the diagnosis of DPN via a simple and effective algorithm and to track progression of disease and treatment response. Identification of biomarkers/predictors that would allow an individualized approach from a potentially disease-modifying perspective may provide opportunities for novel treatments that would be efficacious in early stages of DPN, and may modify the natural course of the disease. This expert opinion document is expected to increase awareness among physicians about conceptual, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of DPN and to assist them in timely recognition of DPN and translating this information into their clinical practice for best practice in the management of patients with DPN.Abdi Ibrahim Pharmaceuticals TurkeyThe author(s) declare financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. Anahtar Kelimeler: Kemik iliği nakil, Hematolojik hastalık, 4B Ekokardiyografi Strain, transtorasik ekokardiyografiIntroduction and Objective: In this study, we aimed to measure pulmonary artery stiffness (PAS) before and after BMT and to evaluate the right ventricle with advanced echocardiographic methods to detect subclinical/clinical right ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary vascular changes that may develop after BMT. Method: 45 allogeneic or autologous bone marrow transplantation (BMT) patients between the ages of 18-65 and 45 healthy control groups were included in the study, and the 1st month data of the patients who underwent BMT were also evaluated. Socio-demographic characteristics, laboratory data and echocardiographic evaluations of both groups were analyzed. In conventional echocardiography, right and left ventricular systolic and diastolic diameters and right myocardial performance index (MPI), right ventricular diastolic function, estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary artery stiffness (PAS) measurements were evaluated. With 4- dimensional echocardiography, right ventricular diastolic and systolic volumes, right ventricular ejection fraction, and right ventricular fractional area change were evaluated. In addition, right ventricular strain was evaluated by Strain echocardiography. Results: In our study, right ventricular global (SaV GS) (-19.242±8.713 vs.- 22.33±1.638 p = 0.022) and free wall strain (SaV FWS) (-25.956±2.836 vs.- 28.211±2.103 p <0.001) in the post-BMT group were significantly lower than the control group. In the BMT group, compared to the control group, right ventricular ejection fraction (RAV EF)(52.311±2.465 VS 56.601±5.548 p<0.001), right ventricular fractional area change (RAV FAC) (46.27±2.57 vs 51.42± 4.56 p<0.001) values were lower. Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated that right heart systolic and diastolic functions and pulmonary artery stiffness may be affected in patients undergoing BMT. In this respect, we believe that patients at risk of developing cardiotoxicity associated with BMT treatment and preparation regimen should be evaluated with advanced echocardiographic techniques to initiate preventive and therapeutic approaches. Deep phenotyping of miRNAs in exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis

    No full text
Cardiac hypertrophy (CH) is an adaptational enlargement of the myocardium, in exposure to altered stress conditions or in case of injury which can lead to heart failure and death. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that play a significant role in modulating gene expression. Here, we aimed to identify new miRNAs effective in an experimental CH model and to find an epigenetic biomarker that could demonstrate therapeutic targets responsible for the pathology of heart tissue and serum. In this study, Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into the training group (TG, n=9) and the control group (CG, n=6). Systolic and diastolic dimensions of the left ventricle and myocardial wall thickness were measured by echocardiography to assess CH. After the exercise program of the rats, miRNA expression measurements and histological analyses were performed. The 25,000 genes in the rat genome were searched using microarray analysis. A total of 128 miRNAs were selected according to the fold change rates, and nine miRNAs were validated for expression analysis. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick (TUNEL) method was used to detect apoptotic cells. Cell proliferation was evaluated by the proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) method. Necrosis, bleeding, and intercellular edema were detected in TG. The mean histopathological score was higher in TG (p=0.03). There were rarely positive cells for apoptosis of both groups in cardiomyocytes. In the receiver characteristic curve analysis (ROC), the heart tissue rno-miR-290 had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.920 with 100% sensitivity and 89.90% specificity (p=0.045), rno-miR-194-5p had AUC of 0.940 with 83.33% sensitivity and 100% specificity (p=0.003), and the serum rno-miR-132-3p AUC was 0.880 with 66.67% sensitivity and 100% specificity (p=0.004) in TG. miR-194-5p was used as a therapeutic target for remodeling the cardiac process. While miR-290 contributes to CH as a negative regulator, miR-132 in serum is effective in the pathological and physiological cardiac remodeling process and is a candidate biomarker.Scientific Research Projects Unit of Istanbul University [48783]This work was supported by the Scientific Research Projects Unit of Istanbul University (Project No.: 48783)

Hepatoprotective effects of N-acetylcysteine on liver injury by irisin upregulation and oxidative stress reduction in diabetic rats

    No full text
BackgroundThe current study aimed to investigate the oxidative stress in rat liver with diabetes mellitus (DM) as well as the protective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on irisin expression.MethodsTwenty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into four groups, 7 rats in each group, and 30-day regimens of experimental or control groups. NAC-treated group is as follows: 100 mg/kg once daily was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.). Diabetes-induced group is as follows: single-dose intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg) was used to induce DM in overnight fasting Wistar rats. By determining blood glucose concentration in STZ-induced rats 72 h after injection of STZ, DM was assessed. DM + NAC group is as follows: STZ-induced DM plus NAC is described previously. On the 30th day of the experiment, liver samples were collected after fasting and anesthesia. Biochemical analyses were performed to measure total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Each liver sample was weighed and then prepared for histopathologic evaluation by light microscopy.ResultsThere was a statistically significant decrease in TAS levels and an increase in TOS and MDA levels in the DM group compared to the control group. In contrast, TOS and MDA levels were found significantly decreased, and TAS levels increased in the serum and liver tissues of the DM + NAC group compared to the DM group. Liver samples were also used for histopathological examination using hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining. STZ-induced liver damage was detected as oxidative stress, increased irisin immunoreactivity, sinusoidal dilatation, and hepatocyte degeneration. In the DM + NAC group, it was observed that NAC significantly reduced the aforementioned histopathological changes due to STZ.ConclusionIn the early period of diabetes, due to the antioxidant properties of irisin related to the sudden response of liver tissue to oxidative stress, it is thought that the immunoreactivity in the tissue increases in the early period. As a result, NAC in diabetic rat liver tissue was found to suppress oxidative damage and irisin immunoreactivity

Can myocardial dysfunction be detected in patients with rheumatoid arthritis with no cardiac symptoms?

    No full text
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate the role of tissue Dop-pler and Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) in evaluating cardiac involvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with no cardi-ac symptoms, to determine whether these mea-surements differ between healthy controls and RA patients, and whether they can be used to determine the risk of cardiovascular disease and predict prognosis.PATIENTS AND METHODS: 50 RA patients fulfilling the 2010 American College of Rheuma-tology/European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) RA criteria and 50 healthy volun-teering controls were included in the study. All patients and controls were assessed using elec-trocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, con-ventional Doppler echocardiography and tissue Doppler echocardiography. MPI values were cal-culated. In addition, RA patients were compared after being divided into two subgroups: sero-positive and seronegative RA. Disease activi-ty levels of the patients were determined based on Disease Activity Score in 28 Joints (DAS28).RESULTS: The control group and RA group were compared in terms of PR interval, left atrial diameter, E/A, E/e', and MPI values. Comparisons between the groups yielded statistically signifi-cant differences in left atrial diameter, E/A, E/e', and MPI values and no significant difference in PR intervals. These parameters were also com-pared between seropositive and seronegative pa-tients. Left atrial diameter was significantly high-er in seronegative patients than in seropositive patients. There was no significant difference in the other values. DAS28 scores had no correla-tion with cardiac parameters.CONCLUSIONS: Early detection of ventricu-lar dysfunction in RA may be useful in clinical practice when predicting prognosis and optimiz-ing treatment. The present study found that RA patients had impaired tissue Doppler measure-ments and MPI results compared to controls. MPI and tissue Doppler may be useful in early detection of ventricular dysfunction
