Modern Greek literaturein Catalan:66 years of translations
This article reviews the reception of modern Greek literature in Catalan throughout the second half of the 20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century. Starting from the set of translated works, it analyses the rhythm of the editions, the authors incorporated, the translators who have intervened and the publishing houses that have been involved. Finally, it tries to obtain some conclusions, comparing the panorama of this reception with that which has occurred in other languages
Teaching english in the 21st century: pedagogical translanguaging with multilingual adolescents
Doctorat industrialThis thesis examines the effect of pedagogical translanguaging on the development of cognate and morphological awareness in multilingual adolescents learning English as a third language. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study also analyses participants’ beliefs on multilingualism and pedagogical translanguaging. The pedagogical intervention, implemented with 86 multilingual adolescents in the province of Valencia, is based on the activation of the students’ whole linguistic repertoire by establishing cross-linguistic similarities. The instruments used included a cognate and morphological awareness test, a beliefs questionnaire, a translanguaging questionnaire and oral interviews. The results show that pedagogical translanguaging had a positive effect on the acquisition of third language vocabulary. In addition, participants reported favourable thoughts towards the inclusion of Spanish and Catalan in the English language classroom and showed positive beliefs regarding the implementation of pedagogical translanguaging.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
Metal complexes with naphthalene-diimide and perylene-diimide-based ligands: supramolecular interactions and catalytic implications
Compendi d'articlesThis doctoral thesis delves into the design and development of new ligand precursors and organometallic complexes through the combination of two different types of rylene-diimides (RDIs), with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based ligands. The novelty and interest of the results described in this doctoral thesis can be summarized in the following three points: • We show that imide functionalization of PDI/NDIs with NHC units can be used as a way to generate redox-switchable ligands with application in homogeneous catalysis. • We describe how the catalytic properties of a simple metal complex can be reversibly modified by using tailored-designed redox-switchable rylene-decorated NHC ligands, thus offering a new and simple approach to modulate the catalytic activity and to elucidate or review reaction mechanisms. • We describe and fully characterize a new type of (chloride)lp– π interaction between the chloride ligands of the Ir(III) complex and the heterocycles of the NDI/PDI moieties combining spectroscopic/computational determination of the lp–π interaction.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
Taking advantage of zoophytophagous-induced plant defenses to improve pest management in horticultural crops
Compendi d'articlesThe growing global demand for food and the increasing challenges posed by climate change call for the development of innovative and sustainable strategies to enhance crop resilience against biotic and abiotic stressors. Harnessing natural plant defense mechanisms presents a promising alternative to conventional pest management, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. This thesis explores the role of zoophytophagous predators and herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) in strengthening plant defenses and improving pest management. We investigate Nesidiocoris tenuis, a biological control agent, and its ability to enhance constitutive resistance in tomato plants. Our findings reveal that N. tenuis feeding induces the formation of type IV glandular trichomes and acylsugar production, mediated by jasmonic acid signaling, thereby improving resistance against whiteflies. Additionally, we assess the effects of (Z)-3-hexenyl propanoate [(Z)-3-HP], a green leaf volatile, on sweet pepper plants. Our findings reveal that (Z)-3-HP exposure upregulates key defense-related genes, enhances resistance to herbivorous pests and abiotic stress, boosts antioxidant activity, and improves plant adaptability to water-deficit conditions. By integrating natural enemies and HIPVs, this research advances sustainable pest management strategies that reinforce plant resilience while reducing environmental impact.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
Neural and behavioural correlates of maladaptive emotion regulation in subclinical anxiety
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalMaladaptive emotion regulation is a major facet of anxiety disorders, contributing to their development and reinforcement of symptoms. However, we still lack understanding of how these phenomena are related to self-blaming emotions, sleep and monoaminergic neuromodulation of brain functions. The current thesis provided insights into maladaptive regulation of self-blaming emotions in subclinically anxious individuals, highlighting crucial contributions from the social semantic system in the superior anterior temporal lobes, particularly its guilt-dependent coupling with subgenual anterior cingulate cortex. The discussed frontal area additionally acted as a region connecting emotional dysregulation with poor sleep. The contributions of the monoaminergic systems were in turn present in the form of increased activity of the noradrenergic centers, and dysconnectivity of the dopaminergic areas with the fronto-parietal control network. Combined, the results of the thesis highlight the complex nature of anxiety disorders, pointing at the important interplay of semantic cognition, neuromodulatory processes and cognitive emotion regulation.
This doctoral research analyzes how Spanish-speaking students at the Scuola Italiana di Montevideo engage with Latin American literature translated into Italian. Using a case study approach, it examines the factors influencing this reception, such as the author’s origin, teachers’ decisions, and the institutional framework. The study explores school anthologies, teaching approaches employed (such as CLIL and pedagogical translation), and teachers’ trajectories. The dissertation introduces the concept of “reinsertion translated literature,” an original category for considering texts that, through translation, return to the context in which they were produced, via a study language. The findings show that students value texts more when they are connected to their interests and experiences, and that the author’s nationality carries less weight. Although the regulatory framework supports the use of translated literature, its didactic integration is not always made explicit. The research combines documentary analysis, interviews, and student surveys.
This doctoral thesis addresses the possibility of providing a more immersive audio description (AD) by combining objective and subjective descriptions. To this end, the research is structured into two parts: a first descriptive phase and a second experimental phase. In the first descriptive phase, an AD corpus is compiled to detail what sign systems, modes, or meaning codes configurate AD scripts. According to the initial descriptive data, AD mainly relies on four sources of information: movement, iconography, spatiotemporal changes, and graphic elements. Based on this data, the descriptive phase also aims to identify whether ADs are objective or subjective in the corpus. The descriptive results indicate that objectivity and subjectivity coexist in ADs. Subsequently, in the experimental phase, the first goal is to analyze sighted participants’ attention patterns recorded using an eye-tracking device in order to propose an alternative experimental AD script. According to the results, the sign systems or meaning codes detected by the eye-tracker are the same as those identified in the AD corpus. However, there appears to be a systematic attention bias: spatiotemporal changes attract participants’ gaze most frequently, followed by movement, iconography, and lastly, textual elements on screen. Finally, the experimental phase employs a heart rate sensor on partially sighted participants to analyze which combination of objective and subjective descriptions results in a more immersive experience for users. Based on the results, it is proposed that an immersive AD is possible through the objective description of graphic elements, the subjective description of spatiotemporal changes, and a combination of both objective and subjective descriptions of movement and iconography.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
Redistribution through inflation: A multi-sector approach to income dynamics
This paper examines how inflation affects income redistribution within the economy – considering household heterogeneity in terms of income sources, debt levels and consumption preferences – by employing an agent-based stock-flow consistent (AB-SFC) macroeconomic model. In particular, we investigate the consequences of an increase in firms’ intermediate costs on income inequality and key macroeconomic and financial variables. Four channels through which an increase in price affects functional and inter-personal distribution are explored: (i) the inflation inequality channel, (ii) the profit–wage channel, (iii) the macroeconomic activity channel, and (iv) the indebtedness channel. Rising inflation dampens overall economic performance, resulting in increased unemployment, higher prices, and higher income inequality. Our analysis also indicates that rising household debt, driven by the indebtedness channel and resulting from efforts to maintain consumption, poses risks to financial stability. Furthermore, we find that, in the context of market concentration, the markup of systemically significant sectors serves as a primary conduit for redistribution in response to inflationary pressures. This ultimately influences the extent of unemployment, the persistence of inflationary trends, and the magnitude of redistribution
Analysis of the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America: The impact of built parkland in richness and abundance of birds
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalUrban expansion creates new bird habitats, prompting studies on how city elements affect these species. However, the influence of buildings remains under-investigated. This thesis analyzes the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America, assessing bird richness and abundance across scales and environmental variables, including buildings. The methodology combined local transect data with regional and international citizen science, analyzed using Excel and R. Findings show birds prefer historical buildings for nesting, and mid-rise buildings (two to four levels) correlate with greater bird richness and abundance. In conclusion, the study emphasizes integrating biodiversity into urban planning, highlighting the ecological value of historical buildings and the need for biodiversity-friendly measures to mitigate habitat loss. The combination of building height and impervious cover better predicts bird diversity than either alone. This work advances landscape ecology by incorporating vertical urban structure into biodiversity models.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material
