Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy as aTransdiagnostic Treatment in a Case of BorderlinePersonality Disorder and Eating Disorder

    No full text
This article presents a case study of a 31‐year‐old woman with a dual diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). Paula received a 12‐month Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) outpatient treatment. DBT is considered a transdiagnostic treatment approach to address emotion dysregulation, which shifts the therapy focus traditionally placed only on behavioral change toward including also validation and acceptance and dialectical strategies. DBT addresses eating symptomatology as a dysfunctional form of emotional regulation and has shown promising results regarding its efficacy for the treatment of BPD and EDNOS comorbidity. Given the growing evidence, a standard DBT treatment plan was developed for this case. Specifically, pretreatment and phase 1 of the DBT program are described. During pretreatment and phase 1, individual therapy aims to improve and maintain client's motivation to change and engage in treatment, as well as to establish and prioritize treatment goals. As for group therapy, the main goal of the skills training in DBT is to enhance individual's capability by increasing skillful behavior (mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills). Paula received 24 weekly skills training sessions over a year. The results after a 12‐month standard DBT treatment showed that Paula no longer met criteria for BPD, she had a significant decrease in difficulties in emotional regulation and impulsiveness and in EDNOS symptomatology. This case study may enhance learning about how to apply a transdiagnostic treatment to address BPD and EDNOS together in clinical practice

    No full text
Efforts to close the gender digital divide should be directed not only at the younger generations, where fewer differences are apparent, but at all age groups. To this end, it is necessary to have instruments that assess the level of Professional Digital Competence, as well as training adapted and aimed at developing this digital competence, both for university students, recent graduates and professional women at different stages of their professional careers. The approach is grounded in the definition of digital competence as the set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable the effective and responsible use of digital technologies to perform tasks and solve problems in increasingly digitized working environments; build meaningful professional relationships through digital collaboration; foster innovation in the workplace; facilitate lifelong continuous professional development; and enhance individuals’ employability. The aim of this study is to design and validate, based on the DigComp framework, a tool for self-assessment of Professional Digital Competence to measure this construct and to propose personalised training itineraries to train women in continuing education and professional development programmes offered by universities and corporate training centres. Investigating potential gender disparities in accessing digital competence training and opportunities would contribute to more inclusive policies. The results show a valid and usable instrument that will be of practical application, both for educational institutions and professionals, to develop personalised training programmes that accompany the development of the level of Professional Digital Competence and help to close the digital divide in the different generations of professionals in a digital society

Ten years of monitoring pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the aquatic environment nearby a solid-waste treatment plant: Historical data, trends and risk assessment

    No full text
The emission of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from wastewater treatment plants has been extensively studied; however, less attention has been paid to municipal solid waste treatment plants (MSWTPs), which can also be a potential source for CECs into surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) ecosystems. In this work, the environmental impact of a MSWTP located in the province of Castelló, Spain, was studied along a period of ten years (from 2012 to 2022). A total of 173 water samples (including SW and GW) collected from the surrounding of this plant were monitored for 93 compounds (pharmaceuticals and pesticides) by using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with triple quadrupole. This study reveals the presence of several pharmaceuticals (e.g. primidone, gabapentin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, tramadol), particularly in GW samples collected near areas related to composting and storage of biostabilized material. The presence of antibiotic residues in GW raises concerns about the potential development of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, agricultural activities in the study area emerge as potential contributor to GW pollution by pesticides, as the MSWTP is located in an important agricultural area where citrus is the predominant crop. Some compounds that are currently prohibited for agricultural use (e.g. atrazine, simazine, chlorpyrifos) were also found, which highlights the importance of continuing their monitoring to assess their long-term environmental impacts. Several pesticide and pharmaceutical compounds exceeded the threshold values established by the EU groundwater directive. Therefore, a hazard assessment for GW ecosystems and for humans drinking contaminated GW resources was conducted. Our data indicated that some organophosphate insecticides (i.e., chlorpyrifos, carbofuran, pyridaphention) may pose high risks for groundwater crustaceans, while the risks for the human population were considered to be very low.Authors acknowledge the financial support from Project PID2021-127451OB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by ERDF A way of making Europe, and from University Jaume I (project UJI-B2022-16). Practices of low value or unnecessary practices in vascular prevention

    No full text
Background: Low-value practices are avoidable interventions that provide no health benefits. The objective of this study was to conduct a narrative review of the recommendations for practices of low value-care in vascular prevention. Methods: A narrative review of all low value-care recommendations for vascular prevention published in the main European and North American scientific societies for clinical practice guidelines between 2014 and 2024 was carried out. Results: A total of 38 clinical practice guidelines and consensus documents from international organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe were reviewed, 28 of which included between 1 and 20 recommendations on practices of low value-care in vascular prevention. The total number of recommendations was 141. The American Heart Association is the society that offers the largest number of recommendations of low value-care, with 39 recommendations (27.7%) in 5 clinical practice guidelines (13.2% of the total guidelines with recommendations). The guideline for the management of arterial hypertension of the European Society of Hypertension is the guideline that concentrates the largest number of recommendations of low value-care in a single guideline, with 20 recommendations (14.2% of the total guidelines with recommendations). Conclusions: There are more and more guidelines that explicitly describe diagnostic or pharmacological activities of low value-care or Do Not Do Class III or recommendation D. Some guidelines agree, but others show clear discrepancies, which can illustrate the uncertainty of the scientific evidence and the differences in its interpretation.

MOSS-6: a multi-label dataset and deep learning model for detecting diverse social support-seeking behaviours in online mental health communities

    No full text
Peer-based social support has proven to be an effective approach for enhancing recovery and coping mechanisms among individuals with mental disorders. Early intervention is crucial in treating mental disorders, as delays can lead to chronic conditions requiring sustained management. However, social stigma and limited public funding for mental health services in Korea have severely restricted access, creating a significant gap between the demand for therapeutic interventions and the available resources. The rapid growth of online platforms offers new opportunities to address this gap by providing tailored support through digital communities. Despite the potential of online social support, existing research has primarily focussed on face-to-face interactions or a narrow range of support types, leaving a significant gap in understanding the full spectrum of support-seeking behaviours in digital environments. To address this issue, we present the MOSS-6 dataset, the first Korean dataset specifically developed to comprehensively identify and classify six distinct types of social support-seeking behaviours in online mental health communities. The dataset was meticulously curated and annotated by mental health professionals/clinicians. Additionally, we developed a deep-learning model to accurately classify these support types. This research not only contributes to the understanding of diverse mental health needs within digital platforms but also lays the groundwork for more effective and personalized online mental health support systems. The MOSS-6 dataset is publicly accessible at https://github.com/dxlabskku/MOSS-6

Incidental nanoparticle characterisation in industrial settings to support risk assessment modelling

    No full text
Research on nanoparticle (NP) release and potential exposure can be assessed through experimental field campaigns, laboratory simulations, and prediction models. However, risk assessment models are typically designed for manufactured NP (MNP) and have not been adapted for incidental NP (INP) properties. A notable research gap is identifying NP sources and their chemical, physical, and toxicological properties, especially in real-world settings. This work aims to provide insights into the release and physico-chemical properties of INP while contributing to improving models for INP release. INP release was evaluated through a case study in a ceramic tile firing facility, where aerosol (10 nm - 10 μm) properties were determined. The Control Banding (CB) Nanotool model was applied to test outputs based on provided input parameters. Results: demonstrate the constant generation and release of INP during tile firing, with NP concentrations up to 68711/cm³ and mean diameters of 37 nm, with 95% smaller than 100 nm. Particle morphology was mostly spherical, suggesting nucleation from precursor gases as the main formation mechanism. INP chemical composition was driven by primary ceramic components, while trace elements like Ni and Ti exhibited size-dependent patterns. In vitro cell viability tests indicated low to medium cytotoxicity of PM2 aerosols, decreasing human alveolar epithelial cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner. Applying the risk model with varying input parameters revealed that the risk level (RL) based on severity scores decreased when aerosol size distribution data were used, illustrating the model's sensitivity to input variables. We conclude on the need for comprehensive experimental datasets to support risk assessment models and achieve effective risk management strategies in real-world scenarios

The Verbal Irony Questionnaire: An Initial Approach to the Conceptualization and Measurement of Verbal Irony in High Intellectual Ability

    No full text
Figurative language is a complex construct related to intelligence. Psychology and psycholinguistics are trying to understand it from an interdisciplinary perspective, but studies are still scarce, methodologies are heterogeneous, and results are difficult to integrate. Some studies suggest that understanding the cognitive processes underlying figurative language and its forms could provide a new approach to understanding intellectual differences, such as high intellectual ability (HIA), and new instruments to assess it. The language of HIA children develops earlier and includes the use of irony, which involves metalinguistic skills. In this context, the present study aims to offer an instrument, called the verbal irony questionnaire (or VIrQ), to test the comprehension of verbal irony in students with HIA. A convenience sample of n = 169 students with HIA, aged between 7 and 15 years, responded to the VIrQ. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The results revealed that 33 items were retained and categorized into four factors. F1, ironic dissociation (14 items); F2, ironic attitude (8 items); F3, ironic constructions (7 items); and F4, reinforced irony echo (4 items). All factors have adequate reliability indices above 0.70 and below 0.95. Finally, new perspectives are also discussed

In 1976, in thecontext of theJornades Catalanes de la Dona, the theatre collective Nyakaperformed an act that is openly known in Spanish feminist historiography. Thus, the following research will focus on the origins of Nyaka, and then concentrate on the action that took place during the feminist conference. Understanding the action as a feminist toolthat questioned the feminist imaginary marked by Franco’s National Catholicism, the aim will beto show the dialogue it generated in the space in which it was carried out, for which thefocus will rely on the emotional and corporal dimension of the act
