Treating self-harm behaviors in prisons: implementation of the STEPPS program
BACKGROUND: Improving mental health within correctional facilities, specifically to address self-harm behaviors, is a crucial endeavor. However, significant challenges arise when implementing evidence-based programs within this complex setting. Despite these hurdles, the Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) program has garnered recognition, notably in the United States, for its efficacy in tackling such issues. This study aimed to examine inmate profiles in prisons located in Catalonia, Spain, and to investigate the STEPPS program's effectiveness and implementation process. METHOD: Forty-one inmates participated in the study and completed measures covering self-harm behaviors, emotion regulation, impulsivity, mental health symptoms, and satisfaction with the intervention. Twenty-four professionals who implemented the STEPPS program completed satisfaction, normalization process, burnout, acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility measures. RESULTS: The results suggest that the STEPPS program significantly reduced symptoms of emotional dysregulation, motor impulsivity, and compulsive symptomatology among inmates. The intervention was well-received by professionals, and perceived as appropriate and feasible. The perception of feasibility decreased after implementation, likely due to contextual factors such as inmate and organization characteristics. Additionally, professionals remained committed to the implementation, dedicating time and effort to the process and engaging in thorough evaluations, without increasing their levels of burnout. CONCLUSIONS: These findings deepen the understanding of self-harm behaviors in prisons, highlighting the program STEPPS as promising approach for addressing self-harm. However, improvements in the STEPPS program are still necessary to enhance its implementation in this setting.R.L.-C. is holder of PhD grant from “Consellería de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital, Generalitat Valencia (Spain). Functions of Translanguaging in Primary School CLIL and EFL Settings
This study investigates the functions of the translingual practices performed by young learners and their teacher in primary school CLIL and EFL contexts. We also aimed at exploring if differences in translanguaging purposes existed between both educational programmes. 22 7-year-old students from the 2nd year of primary education and their EFL and CLIL science teacher took part in the study. Participants belonged to a public school from the city of Alcora, in the Valencian Community (Spain), which offers three teaching languages (Catalan, Spanish and English). Classroom observations and video-audio recordings were conducted in 8 EFL (6 hours) and 8 CLIL lessons (6 hours). Data was transcribed and analysed employing two taxonomies that we have adapted, being Sampson’s (2012) and Sahan and Rose’s (2021) classifications of language use. Qualitative data was examined through deductive and inductive analytical approaches. Quantitative data was analysed using the SPSS programme. Findings indicate that translanguaging was employed by participants in both contexts to accomplish particular teaching, learning and communicative functions. However, translanguaging episodes were more frequent in EFL than in CLIL. Results from several Pearson’s chi-square tests and post hoc Bonferroni adjustments demonstrated differences in specific subfunctions of translanguaging between CLIL and EFL settings, dealing with certain aspects of students’ metalanguage and teacher’s content transmission and classroom management. This study suggests the adoption of a more multilingual approach in early language and content learning, as well as the need for teacher training on the use of effective translanguaging strategies

Mapping and characterization of the surface structure and electronic properties of -Ag MoO from DFT thermodynamic calculations
The physical and chemical properties of metal oxides are closely related to their surface termination, the presence of defects, and structural disorder, making the assignment of surface-morphology-property relationship difficult. The identification of specific descriptors that govern the surface properties is crucial to design new materials with customized compositions and structures. In this study, we investigated the relative stability and electronic properties of sixteen terminations of -AgMoO (110), (111), and (011) surfaces, based on the calculated surface Gibbs free energies, by employing DFT calculations to obtain the Ag–Mo–O surface phase diagrams. We underscored how the local electronic structure has a profound influence on the work function and structural stability of surface terminations as function of thermodynamic equilibrium conditions, thus providing a critical factor for regulating the functional properties of this semiconductor. The values of the work function are very dependent of the surface terminations; thus the corresponding photocatalytic activity can be modulated by achieving thermodynamically favored surface terminations under appropriate conditions. Based on the analysis mentioned above, our results will help us know which surface terminations are stable under the thermodynamic equilibrium growth conditions and better understand their surfaces’ intrinsic properties. This study provides a solid foundation for engineering the intrinsic structural and electronic characteristics of future -AgMoO-based materials
The article proposes that Jaime E. Rodríguez, with a transnational perspective, shifted the study of the Ibero-American independence from a traditional nationalist historiography to the Constitution of Cadiz and the new institutions that it created because they were the meeting point of the interactions between the Peninsula, America and the Philippines. Rodríguez emphasized the reciprocal influences between the Ibero-American insurgent demands and the elaboration of the Cadiz charter and studied Hispanic political culture and the different forms of representation that made the Constitution of Cadiz possible and its projection on the Mexican constitution of 1824 and Mexican nationalism. Likewise, this text recovers the responses that Rodríguez gave to the historiographical resistances that aroused his transnational perspective
Electrochemical Response of Cold-Sintered Cathode-Hybrid Electrolyte Bilayers: Deep Insights into the Determining Kinetic Mechanisms via Operando Electrochemical Impedance Characterization
This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of solid-state bilayers using LiFePO₄ (LFP) cathodes and Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP)-based Composite Solid Electrolytes (CSEs) via Cold Sintering Process (CSP). By optimizing the sintering pressure, it is achieved an intimate contact between the cathode and the solid electrolyte, leading to an enhanced electrochemical performance. Bilayers cold sintered at 300 MPa and a low-sintering temperature of 150 °C exhibit high ionic conductivities (0.5 mS cm−1) and stable specific capacities at room temperature (160.1 mAh g−1LFP at C/10 and 75.8 mAh g−1LFP at 1 C). Moreover, an operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique is employed to identify limiting factors of the bilayer kinetics and to anticipate the overall electrochemical behavior. Results suggest that capacity fading can occur in samples prepared with high sintering pressures due to a volume reduction in the LFP crystalline cell. This work demonstrates the potential of CSP to produce straightforward high-performance bilayers and introduces a valuable non-destructive instrument for understanding and avoiding degradation in solid-state lithium-based batteries
This work takes a journey through the history of the Gypsy People from the general aspects –Spain– to the particular –Castellón de la plana–. The history of the gypsies in Castellón has happened parallel to the rest of the territory: pilgrimage, settlement, control and chase were consubstantial to the region. This thesis investigates the causes of persistent repulse and discrimination, protected from a legal point of view but with a social and economic background that has fed stereotypes and negative image of gypsy ethnic group: wandering, cheaters, lazy… which still remain today. The Gypsies history in Spain can be summed up saying that they were accepted as pilgrims, rejected as neighbours and discriminated like a Spaniards. The campaigns started in the 21st century by Gypsy Organisation has emphasized understanding their culture. These are new times and new perspectives, to which we hope to contribute through our study.Programa de Doctorat en Història i Estudis Contemporani

Valorization of transgenic Tomaffron-based products enriched in saffron apocarotenoids
Saffron spice (Crocus sativus L.) is highly valued for its bioactive apocarotenoids, including crocins, picrocrocin, and safranal, but its commercial production is limited due to labor-intensive cultivation. In this study, Tomaffron, a transgenic tomato-based platform enriched with saffron apocarotenoids, has been processed into different tomato products to assess their suitability as carriers of these valuable apocarotenoids. Their composition, antioxidant capacity, and sensory attributes were analyzed, with particular attention paid to saffron apocarotenoid stability during processing and storage. Tomaffron-processed products retained or increased the levels of saffron apocarotenoids, with crocin accumulation remaining stable during storage. Picrocrocin and safranal levels remained stable or increased, and sensory tests confirmed that these products replicated the saffron-like flavor. This work highlights the potential of Tomaffron for delivering saffron apocarotenoids in stable, ready-to-consume food matrices. These findings support the feasibility of developing functional food prototypes enriched in valuable plant secondary metabolites using metabolic engineering
Taking advantage of zoophytophagous-induced plant defenses to improve pest management in horticultural crops
Compendi d'articlesThe growing global demand for food and the increasing challenges posed by climate change call for the development of innovative and sustainable strategies to enhance crop resilience against biotic and abiotic stressors. Harnessing natural plant defense mechanisms presents a promising alternative to conventional pest management, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. This thesis explores the role of zoophytophagous predators and herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) in strengthening plant defenses and improving pest management. We investigate Nesidiocoris tenuis, a biological control agent, and its ability to enhance constitutive resistance in tomato plants. Our findings reveal that N. tenuis feeding induces the formation of type IV glandular trichomes and acylsugar production, mediated by jasmonic acid signaling, thereby improving resistance against whiteflies. Additionally, we assess the effects of (Z)-3-hexenyl propanoate [(Z)-3-HP], a green leaf volatile, on sweet pepper plants. Our findings reveal that (Z)-3-HP exposure upregulates key defense-related genes, enhances resistance to herbivorous pests and abiotic stress, boosts antioxidant activity, and improves plant adaptability to water-deficit conditions. By integrating natural enemies and HIPVs, this research advances sustainable pest management strategies that reinforce plant resilience while reducing environmental impact.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
