BMAL1-TRIM28 represses transposable elements independently of CLOCK in pluripotent cells

    No full text
Circadian oscillations of gene transcripts rely on a negative feedback loop executed by the activating BMAL1-CLOCK heterodimer and its negative regulators PER and CRY. Although circadian rhythms and CLOCK protein are mostly absent during embryogenesis, the lack of BMAL1 during prenatal development causes an early aging phenotype during adulthood, suggesting that BMAL1 performs an unknown non-circadian function during organism development that is fundamental for healthy adult life. Here, we show that BMAL1 interacts with TRIM28 and facilitates H3K9me3-mediated repression of transposable elements in naïve pluripotent cells, and that the loss of BMAL1 function induces a widespread transcriptional activation of MERVL elements, 3D genome reorganization and the acquisition of totipotency-associated molecular and cellular features. We propose that during embryogenesis, BMAL1 is redeployed as a transcriptional repressor of transposons in a CLOCK-independent way, and the activity of BMAL1-TRIM28 during prenatal life might protect mammalian organisms from premature aging during adulthood

What faculty already do: Universal Design for Learning strategies to support autistic students at university

    No full text
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is increasingly being considered in the different educational stages to embrace student diversity. However, more research is needed on how this paradigm can support the participation and learning of autistic students, integrating the perspectives of both faculty and these students. Conducted at University Jaume I in Spain, the research adopted a phenomenological framework, holding focus groups with 15 faculty members and individual interviews with 12 autistic students. Data analysis, guided by a phenomenographic approach, revealed that faculty members implement UDL principles, such as offering choice in content exploration and using seminars to clarify concepts, although unconsciously. The study concluded the importance of raising awareness on the strategies being developed within the UDL framework, as well as proving its benefits from the students' voice, aiming at providing a more constructive view that encourages faculty to continue innovating their practice from a more inclusive perspective.

Raising Awareness of Gender-Based Violence Through Messages Based on Ethical Witnessing: A Spain-Based Study

    No full text
This study takes the perspective of the theory of ethical witnessing. We analyse whether there is a difference in a discourse transmitted in a frame of reference based on ethical witnessing versus a discourse transmitted in the frame of hegemonic discourse based on the hierarchical testimony. This study tests the hypothesis that discourses diverging from the communication hierarchy and, consequently, from the interpretation frame established about gender-based violence, transform the elaboration, comprehension, and structure of questioning the victim’s suffering. The sample comprised 300 individuals, 85 identifying as male and 215 identifying as female. This study adopted a two-factorial (2 × 2) design comparing the testimony of gender-based violence (ethical witnessing vs. hierarchical testimony) and familiarity with the victim’s testimony (Yes vs. No). The results show that communications based on the ethical witnessing format are more effective in transforming the perception of gender-based violence than those using a hierarchical format. This study adopts the framework of ethical witnessing to examine whether discourse differs when conveyed through this lens, compared to discourse shaped by a hegemonic, hierarchical testimony. We test the hypothesis that narratives which deviate from traditional communication hierarchies—and thus from dominant interpretative frameworks surrounding gender-based violence—significantly influence how the victim’s suffering is processed, understood, and questioned. The global resonance of the #MeToo movement exemplifies the transformative potential of ethical testimony, as it amplified the voices of survivors while challenging traditional hierarchies of credibility and authority in public discourse

Citar para engañar: citas falsas y deslegitimación política en las campañas de desinformación de base de la extrema derecha española

    No full text
This paper focuses on the deliberate fabrication of quotations attributed to rival politicians by Spanish far right activists and their dissemination on social media (particularly Twitter/X). It argues that such practices can be viewed as attempts to undermine the credibility and legitimacy of political adversaries. The data were obtained from Al Descubierto (http://aldescubierto.org), an organization specializing in tracking disinformation spread in Spain by the far right. This study examines a collection of anti-government disinformation, specifically focusing on the content of fake quotes attributed to government officials or other left-leaning politicians. The analysis uncovers a calculated attempt to portray left-wing politicians as incompetent leaders, thereby undermining their legitimacy to govern the nation. Specifically, it shows that fake quotes can help present politicians as immoral and their policies as irrational. In short, these fabricated quotes are used to erode trust in governing institutions and delegitimize politicians and policy initiatives.

Association Between Physical Activity Level and Training Volume in Adolescent Athletes

    No full text
Organized sports are assumed to boost overall physical activity, but evidence suggests structured training does not always increase general activity outside formal sessions. This study explores the link between physical activity levels and weekly training hours in adolescent athletes across sports and competition levels. A total of 10,196 participants aged 11 to 19 were included in the analyses. Participants were classified into seven groups: inactive, somewhat active, non-competitive athletes, and athletes competing at the local, regional, national, or international level. They completed the Spanish version of the Physical Activity Questionnaire and answered questions regarding their performance level, training volume, and socioeconomic status. Girls exhibited lower physical activity levels than boys, even at higher competition levels where both sexes had comparable training hours. Competitive athletes reported the highest physical activity levels. In competitive athletes, physical activity levels decreased with age despite a substantial increase in weekly training hours. They were similar across athletes competing in different sports and at different levels, despite significant differences in training hours. Many athletes, including those at the national and international levels, displayed low physical activity levels, and no clear relationship was found between physical activity level and weekly training hours. The current study provides valuable insights into adolescent physical activity patterns by sex, age, sport, and competition level. Girls showed lower physical activity than boys, even with similar training hours. Physical activity levels declined with age despite increasing training volumes, and no strong association was observed between physical activity and weekly training hours. These results reveal a discrepancy between structured training and overall activity levels, challenging assumptions about the impact of sports participation on daily physical activit

Integrating Low-Cost Eye-Trackers to Enhance Design Education: A Case Study in University Course

    No full text
The integration of technology in the classroom should be based on low-cost devices and affordable solutions, allowing educators to fully explore their potential benefits. Product design education is undergoing a profound transformation in response to these changes. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the integration of low-cost eye-tracking (ET) technology within a product design process. This research presents a practical case involving a group of design students who incorporated an ET device, as well as an alternative tracking method (AT) that simulates eye movement, to develop a product following a custom design methodology. The impact of both the methodology and the low-cost technology was evaluated through surveys administered to forty-seven students. The evaluation focused primarily on “utility, novelty, and relevance” as key aspects. The results showed consistently high approval ratings for both technologies. However, ET received significantly higher and more favorable evaluations. A detailed analysis of the evaluated elements indicated a strong preference for ET in terms of utility, novelty, and relevance. Furthermore, a correlational analysis revealed that students associated the integration of low-cost technology with usefulness and a positive experience. The findings of this case study highlight that low-cost devices and innovative methodologies are effective tools for enhancing teaching and learning experiences for students, educators, and researchers
