    Processing and optimization of laser-activated Cu and Ni inks for ceramic tile inkjet printing

    This study presents a technique for the metallization of ceramic surfaces under ambient conditions, using metallic inks activated through direct laser writing. This process represents a significant advancement in surface processing technology in the ceramic tile industry. The method involves crystallizing metallic coatings directly onto the ceramic surface, using a Cu or Ni polymer coordination complex. A uniform and vitrified metallic coating is formed on the ceramic when exposed to pulsed laser irradiation at 1064 nm. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis confirm the formation of face-centered cubic phases of Cu and Ni. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis reveals spherical grains embedded in the matrix with diameters smaller than 150 nm. TEM analysis confirms the presence of crystals with an average size smaller than 20 nm, which induce Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) effects. The absorption effect observed at 450 and 350 nm, indicated by UV–Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effects of Cu and Ni particles on the glass coating. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirms the laser-induced redox transformation of Cu(II) and Ni(II) precursor complexes into reduced Cu(0) and Ni(0) nanoparticles, while also confirming the formation of a thin oxide coating of CuO and NiO on the surface. This approach holds great potential for digital ceramic decoration due to the scalable nature of this technique.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

    Proteomic evaluation of borosilicate hybrid sol-gel coatings with osteogenic, immunomodulatory and antibacterial properties

    Silica hybrid sol-gel coatings represent an interesting approach to bioactivate dental implants. Boron is known for its osteogenic, angiogenic and antibacterial functions in biomedical applications. This study describes the synthesis of a novel borosilicate hybrid sol-gel coating using a mixture of methyltrimethoxysilane, tetraethyl orthosilicate and trimethyl borate (TMB). Coatings with different amounts of boron were obtained, and their physiochemical properties were examined; in vitro tests with human osteoblasts and macrophages (THP-1) were carried out. The effects of these materials on bacteria viability were evaluated using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The human serum proteins adsorbed onto the coatings were analysed employing proteomic techniques. To synthesise the new materials, the appropriate sol-gel reactions were developed; boron was integrated into the silica network, and well-adhering coatings were obtained. These borosilicate coatings were non-cytotoxic, displayed osteogenic potential, and upregulated adsorption of proteins related to bone regeneration (IGF2, ALS and APOE). Boron upregulated the expression of TNF-α, INFg and TGF-β and increased the TNF-α and TGF-β cytokine production in THP-1. Moreover, the addition of boron caused downregulation of NOX2 expression. Proteomic analysis revealed that boron-doping reduced the adsorption of immunoglobulins and complement system proteins. It also caused an increase in the levels of apolipoproteins, antioxidant proteins and serum amyloid A proteins, which was in agreement with in vitro results. The coatings with 10 and 20 % TMB displayed antibacterial effect against S. aureus. The results of this study will enhance our comprehension of interactions between boron-containing biomaterials and biological systems.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

    Initial Teacher Training of Novice Faculty in the Spanish Higher Education System

    Educational reforms in European Higher Education have brought about substantial changes in educational policy, being necessary to address the initial training of university teachers. This study aims to analyse the training proposals for teacher induction of novice faculty in Spanish universities. The research followed an exploratory–descriptive methodology. Most Spanish universities offer ongoing teacher training for teaching and research staff, yet only about half offer specific induction training for novice faculty. This finding indicates a potential area for improvement in the initial support provided to novice faculty. The results reveal a weak structuring and systematisation of initial teacher training, notable discrepancies in training characteristics and an apparent gap in programme assessment. The induction strategy should be contextualised by matching the opportunities offered by the institution with the personal demands of the novices. Also, it should be based on a previous diagnosis and set of minimum criteria for designing induction to guarantee equal professional preparation.     Electrolyte influence on light-assisted electrooxidation of an herbicide employing an Sb-SnO2 electrode coated with a Bi2WO6 photocatalyst

    In this work, a series of photoelectrooxidation experiments of the herbicide bentazon (BTZ) under three different electrolytes (Na2SO4, NaCl, and a mixture of both) and using ceramic anodes of Sb-SnO2 coated with a photocatalyst (Bi2WO6) were carried out. Using Na2SO4 as an electrolyte, 74.6 % of BTZ was degraded and 48.5 % was mineralized at 50 mA⋅cm− 2 without light. Under light application, mineralization increased at this current density by a 31.6 %. This increase was partly due to the activation of persulfates towards the formation of high oxidative SO4 •− radicals. Using NaCl, up to 85.1 % of BTZ was degraded and 57.2 % was mineralized. Light noticeably fastened the degradation and increased its final value by 8.9 %, otherwise this effect was not as intense in the mineralization. Observed differences between degradation and mineralization under light application were attributed to the formation of photogenerated reactive chlorine species (RCS), which were proven to transform the BTZ faster into different chlorinated molecules, degrading but not mineralizing it. The mixed electrolyte achieved 85.1 % degradation and 54.5 % mineralization at 50 mA⋅cm− 2 in absence of light. Under light application, degradation was enhanced by a final 6.8 % but the effect was lower than with pure NaCl, due to its lower concentration of the salt and therefore, lesser formation of derivative RCS. Mineralization was also enhanced by a 14.5 % under light application. The mixed electrolyte showed trends in between both pure electrolytes. Scavenging tests for • OHfree using tert-butanol, showed an inhibition of up to 11 % in the presence of light, meaning an important role of this species in the oxidation process. Detection of short-stringed carbon molecules such as formate and acetate confirmed proper oxidation of BTZ, and the detection of chlorate confirmed the formation of RCS. In general, Mineralization Current Efficiency (MCE), energy consumption, and extent of electrochemical combustion (Φ) showed improvements with light application, aligning with what was observed during the photoelectrooxidations. These results confirm that these photoanodes are quite sensitive to light, and are capable of oxidizing complex organic molecules, opening to future possibilities in the advanced environmental treatment

    Enhancing a Kernel Method for Shape Analysis in Kendall Space

    In learning methods defined on a manifold, it is often important to embed the manifold into a Hilbert space to apply kernel methods, as it enables the utilization of linear techniques in the transformed space, thereby facilitating complex data analysis and classification tasks with nonlinear structures [10]. In [6], the authors define an embedding of the m-dimensional Kendall shape space into an RN space, from which kernel methods are introduced in the Kendall shape space. In this paper, we significantly simplify this result by achieving an embedding of the Kendall shape space into a Euclidean space Rn of much lower dimension n than N, greatly simplifying calculations and computational costs of applications. Additionally, we characterize the image of the Kendall shape space in Rn, allowing us to define a new extrinsic mean of shapes in the Kendall shape space.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

    Barreras y Estrategias en el acceso de la juventud a la vivienda: Revisión sistemática. (2025)

Curs acadèmic: 2024/2025El acceso a la vivienda por parte de la población joven se ha consolidado como un problema estructural tanto en España como en el conjunto de la Unión Europea. A pesar de ciertos avances económicos y de políticas orientadas a la mejora del mercado laboral, la emancipación juvenil sigue enfrentando múltiples barreras de carácter económico, social e institucional. Esta situación ha despertado una creciente preocupación en los ámbitos académico, político y social, ya que disponer de una vivienda digna es un factor clave para la autonomía personal, el bienestar psicosocial y el desarrollo vital de la juventud. Con el objetivo de comprender las causas y los factores que agravan esta problemática, se ha llevado a cabo una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica reciente. El propósito principal de este trabajo es analizar los estudios que abordan el acceso de la juventud a la vivienda, prestando especial atención a las principales barreras identificadas, así como a las estrategias y políticas públicas implementadas en distintos contextos europeos. La búsqueda bibliográfica se realizó en las bases de datos Web of Science y Scopus, focalizada en publicaciones en inglés comprendidas entre los años 2018 y 2024. La estrategia de búsqueda se estructuró combinando dos bloques de términos clave: uno relativo al acceso a la vivienda juvenil ("youth housing", "access to housing") y otro vinculado a modelos internacionales de referencia, como el caso de Viena ("Vienna"), utilizando operadores booleanos. Se siguieron las directrices del protocolo PRISMA para garantizar la transparencia y la calidad metodológica del proceso de selección. Tras aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión establecidos, se seleccionaron finalmente 10 estudios de un total inicial de 200. El 45 % de los estudios revisados se centraron exclusivamente en las barreras de acceso, tales como la mercantilización de la vivienda, la falta de regulación efectiva, la precariedad en el mercado del alquiler o el retraso en los procesos de emancipación. El 36 % abordó exclusivamente estrategias facilitadoras, como el papel de la familia como red de apoyo, la mejora del entorno urbano o la implementación de subvenciones públicas. El 19 % restante combinó ambas perspectivas, integrando tanto las barreras como las respuestas activas de la juventud. Los resultados evidencian que las principales dificultades para el acceso juvenil a la vivienda están relacionadas con la inestabilidad laboral, los ingresos insuficientes, el encarecimiento del mercado inmobiliario, la limitada efectividad de las políticas públicas y las restricciones para acceder al crédito o a un alquiler asequible.Access to housing for the young population has become a structural issue both in Spain and across the European Union. Despite certain economic improvements and policies aimed at enhancing the labor market, youth emancipation continues to face multiple economic, social, and institutional barriers. This situation has sparked growing concern within academic, political, and social spheres, as having access to decent housing is a key factor for personal autonomy, psychosocial well-being, and the life development of young people. In order to understand the causes and factors that exacerbate this problem, a systematic review of recent scientific literature was conducted. The primary aim of this study is to analyze research addressing youth access to housing, with special attention to the main identified barriers as well as the strategies and public policies implemented in various European contexts. The bibliographic search was performed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, focusing on publications in English from 2018 to 2024. The search strategy combined two blocks of key terms: one related to youth housing access ("youth housing," "access to housing") and another linked to international reference models, such as the case of Vienna ("Vienna"), using Boolean operators. The PRISMA protocol guidelines were followed to ensure transparency and methodological rigor in the selection process. After applying the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 studies were ultimately selected from an initial total of 200. Forty-five percent of the reviewed studies focused exclusively on access barriers, such as the commodification of housing, lack of effective regulation, precarious rental markets, and delays in emancipation processes. Thirty-six percent dealt exclusively with facilitating strategies, including the role of family as a support network, improvements to urban environments, and the implementation of public subsidies. The remaining 19% combined both perspectives, integrating barriers with active youth responses. The results demonstrate that the main difficulties for youth access to housing are related to job instability, insufficient income, rising real estate costs, limited effectiveness of public policies, and restrictions in accessing credit or affordable rental housin

    Tuning CO2 Capture and Conversion with Metal–Organic Frameworks Crystallized in Aqueous Graphene Oxide Suspensions

    We present a green procedure for the synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) (having Zn, Ni, or Co) in graphene oxide aqueous suspensions (obtained with graphitized or nongraphitized carbon nanofibers) avoiding organic solvents and high temperatures. The materials were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N2/CO2-physisorption, Raman and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies. The results demonstrate that the nature of the metal (electronegativity) and graphene oxide (defects of oxygen-containing groups) are key in the size, porosity, and defectivity (free noncoordinated linkers and open metal sites) of the MOF and significantly affect their CO2 adsorption energy (up to 6 kJ·mol–1 increase), uptake (up to 5·mmolCO2·g–1 increase), and catalytic activity (up to 35% rate increase) with respect to bulk MOFs in the solvent-free, ambient pressure CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides.F.G.C. and N.M. acknowledge the “Ramon y Cajal” contract with code RYC2020-028681-I and RYC2021-033167-I, respectively, funded MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ESF investing in your future”, “European Union Next GenerationEU/PRTR”.     The relation between perfectionism and music performance anxiety: a HE RELATION BETWEEN PERFECTIONISM AND MUSIC PERFORMANCE ANXIETY: A NARRATIVE REVISION

Departament de Psicologia Bàsica, Clínica i PsicobiologiaMusic Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a prevalent phenomenon that occurs among musicians, caused by high achievement expectations and fear of negative evaluation. The following narrative review explores the relationship between perfectionism and MPA screening ten studies published in the last ten years. Findings showed a consistent strong correlation between maladaptive perfectionism and higher levels of MPA. Other cognitive variables have been also found such as self-efficacy and fear of negative evaluation, while adaptive perfectionism did not report a clear protective role. Variables such as gender and experience also influence MPA expression as well as cultural differences, coping strategies like meditation or substance use. In spite of varied conceptualizations and assessment tools maladaptive perfectionism is indeed a psychological risk factor for MPA emphasizing the need for further research and an integrative approach in musicians’ education and their mental health.La Ansiedad Escénica en músicos (MPA, por sus siglas en inglés) es un fenómeno prevalente entre músicos, generalmente desencadenado por altas expectativas de éxito y miedo a la evaluación negativa. La siguiente revisión narrativa analiza la relación entre el perfeccionismo y MPA mediante el análisis de diez estudios publicados en los últimos diez años. Los hallazgos muestran una correlación constante y significativa entre el perfeccionismo desadaptativo y altos niveles de MPA. También se identificaron otras variables cognitivas como la autoeficacia y el miedo a la evaluación negativa, mientras que el perfeccionismo adaptativo no mostró un claro efecto protector. Factores como el género, la experiencia, las diferencias culturales o las estrategias de afrontamiento como la meditación o el consumo de sustancias, también influyen en la expresión de MPA. Pese a las diferencias en las conceptualizaciones y herramientas de evaluación utilizadas, el perfeccionismo desadaptativo se confirma como un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de MPA lo que nos enfatiza la necesidad de mayor investigación y un enfoque integrador en la formación musical y el cuidado de la salud mental de los músicos y músicas

    The effect of remittances on income inequality: Empirical evidence

Curs acadèmic: 2024/2025International remittances have been a key factor in many countries’ economies, but their impact on income inequality is still debated. This study seeks to analyse how remittances affect income inequality, assessing whether they reduce or exacerbate economic disparities. Using the System GMM estimation method, the relationship is examined in a sample of 24 developing countries from Latin America and Asia. The hypothesis tested is that remittances inflows contribute to reduce inequality; however, the findings indicate the opposite impact. Additionally, it is examined the regional impact of remittances in Latin America and Asia, separately. The expected results are that they have negative sign, thus inequality is reduced. While, in Asia this hypothesis is confirmed, it is not supported in the case of Latin America. These outcome highlights the importance of economic factors that vary in each region and the governments’ ability to make policies to maximize the benefits of remittances
