Learning outcomes of project-based learning activities on access to functional diversity terms

    No full text
Introduction: This article presents a project-based classroom practice of transformative language teaching and learning for sustainability (TLS). Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG10) was approached paying close attention to the use of language in relation to (in)equality-related terms. This use of language is also defended as SDG18 in recent research in a debate about the importance of language use as a transversal sustainable development goal. Methodology: A task-based methodology is employed to examine students’ perception on functional diversity terms and how their understanding changed throughout the practice developed in the study. Qualitative data in this study are drawn from a group of students (n = 20) who were finishing their degree in English Studies. Students participated in a task to analyze five functional diversity terms (Special Educational Needs, disability, deaf, blind, and Asperger’s). A qualitative research questionnaire asked the participants to reflect on their learning process in this task. Results and discussion: The report of our findings shows how students developed their lexicographic and conceptual competence regarding FD terms. Results illustrate how TLS transformed students’ concepts and ideas underlying functional diversity concepts and helped promote sustainable language use

Treball Final de Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048. Ambition, understood as the desire to advance and achieve a high status, represents a relatively stable psychological trait that can serve as a driver of personal and professional growth in the workplace. However, it can also become a risk factor if not managed properly. The aim of this Final Degree Project is to analyses, through a literature review, the relationship between ambition in the workplace and the variables that influence the psychological well-being and performance of employees. A literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 model. The final sample consisted of 16 scientific articles selected for their relevance to the study of ambition in the workplace. The studies reviewed show that ambition can have positive effects, such as increased motivation, improved self-efficacy, organizational commitment and professional development. However, it can also lead to burnout, stress, job dissatisfaction and unethical behavior, especially under authoritarian or pressuring leadership. Factors that modulate ambition were identified, such as gender, the generation to which the worker belongs, and the level of organizational support. It was observed that the level of ambition is similar between men and women, but women face greater structural barriers to their professional development. Likewise, younger workers tend to show higher ambition than those with more experience. It was also highlighted that transformational leadership is the most effective in channeling ambition in a healthy way. Based on the findings, future research should include longitudinal studies to observe the evolution of ambition, delve deeper into generational differences, include more mixed-gender samples, and design interventions to help channel ambition

Multimodal approach to translanguaging practices: From translanguaging to trans-semiotising in an EMI business course

    No full text
The emergence of English Medium Instruction in Higher Education has increased the interest in translanguaging, which involves using individuals' linguistic repertoire as a pedagogical tool to scaffold content comprehension. Nevertheless, meaning-making is not solely a product of language; rather, it emerges from the interaction between language and other semiotic resources. In EMI lectures, students need to understand disciplinary content in a language other than their L1. Consequently, lecturers must look for different strategies to make such specific content more accessible and comprehensible. In order to understand how disciplinary content is conveyed by an EMI lecturer, this paper explores the role of translanguaging and other semiotic modes to revisit the functions of translanguaging so that we can redefine them as trans-semiotising practices. The data collected included two video-recorded lectures from a Business course. Following Sahan and Rose's taxonomy (2021) and from a mixed-based approach, we aim at analysing quantitatively and qualitatively the episodes where translanguaging was employed by the lecturer. We then examine the multimodal nature of those episodes using the Multimodal Discourse Analysis perspective and the GRAPE-MARS software. Results show that translanguaging has a clear pedagogical function since the lecturer employs the L1 to check students' comprehension, explain or clarify presented content, translate technical vocabulary, provide feedback, and build rapport. Moreover, depending on the aforementioned functions, the lecturer employs specific multimodal ensembles, which reinforce translanguaging practices. Hence, this practice should be redefined as trans-semiotising because it offers a more comprehensive approach to communication within the EMI classroom.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

    No full text
The concept of Public Engagement (PE) is related to progress toward responsible and open science. This article aims to analyse how to define and integrate PE into the development of ethical governance systems for research and innovation. Multistakeholder consultation on the governance of Responsible Research and Innovation was carried out internationally within the framework of the European ETHNA project, with interviews, workshops and a survey answered by 889 experts. The results include the detection of the main drivers and barriers to the implementation of PE on the design and application of an ethical system of governance. The study concludes that PE is a fundamental criterion for the design and implementation of an ethical system for the governance of science, for normative reasons and due to implementation practices. The main driving forces depend on its inclusion in the governance of institutions (culture, management support, training, incentives and resources) and its application through ethical management tools (ethical codes, committees and ethics lines).Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

Treball Final de Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048. Dating apps have influenced patterns of interaction in romantic and sexual relationships, yet there is limited literature on their use among different subgroups within the middle-aged LGBT community. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to assess the prevalence of use and the motivations for using dating apps and social media among individuals aged 30 to 50, based on gender and sexual orientation and to analyze the sociodemographic and behavioral factors that influence the use of dating apps in this population. A randomly selected subsample (n=720) from a larger project, Project SAFO, was used, consisting of Spanish men and women identifying as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual, aged between 30 and 50 years. Ad hoc instruments were used to collect sociodemographic data and information about the use and motivations for using dating apps or social media. Data analysis revealed that men reported higher usage of dating apps compared to women, and that homosexual individuals reported higher usage than their heterosexual counterparts. Regarding motivations, men reported greater use for sexual arousal, casual sex, and making friends compared to women. Homosexual and bisexual men, in particular, were significantly more likely to report these motivations than their heterosexual counterparts. Finally, logistic regression analysis found that being a man, being homosexual, having a high education level, and having a consensually non-monogamous relationship model were found to be the best significant predictors of dating app usage

Evolving solar cell manufacturing: the promising outlook of open-air perovskite printing

    No full text
Perovskite-based solar cells stand out as promising candidates due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties and cost-effective processing methods. These advanced materials have garnered considerable research interest owing to their rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies. Additionally, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can be flexible, lightweight, and semi-transparent, expanding their applicability. While conventional spin-coating techniques have achieved record power conversion efficiencies for PSCs, scalability remains a challenge. Furthermore, these materials face two significant hurdles: instability when exposed to open air and concerns regarding chemical toxicity, primarily from lead (Pb) and solvent use. Recent advancements have focused on open-air printing techniques, which offer scalability and adaptability for large-scale production. However, the lack of standardized fabrication protocols and the need to mitigate chemical toxicity remain ongoing challenges. In this comprehensive review, we thoroughly examine the latest developments in perovskite solar cell technology, with a particular emphasis on open-air printing processes. We explore the strategies employed to enhance stability, efficiency, and scalability, highlighting the critical role of open-air printing in achieving these objectives. Furthermore, this review addresses the challenges and opportunities associated with open-air printing, including material synthesis, and device architecture. We analyze recent breakthroughs in materials and interface, and solvent engineering, as well as device fabrication techniques, driving advancements in the field towards simplified, large-area fabrication protocols for PSCs

Hate speech: a study on emotions, gender, and dissemination

    No full text
Treball Final de Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048. The impact of hate speech has intensified with the use of social media, promoting an overexposure to multiple types of content and facilitating the formation of more superficial and unfounded opinions. According to the UN (2019), hate speech is considered any form of communication that attacks or discriminates against people based on their belonging to certain social groups, whether for reasons of religion, ethnicity, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation. From the perspective of Social Identity Theory (SIT), such messages are understood to reinforce the ingroup’s identity through the disqualification of the outgroup, promoting social polarization and the consolidation of stereotypes. This study analyzes three aspects: the emotion generated by a message (emotional valence), the intensity of that emotion, and the willingness of individuals to share the content. For this purpose, a quantitative exploratory approach was used, with the participation of 75 individuals. Each participant was presented with four tweets containing both disqualifying and constructive messages about feminism and immigration. The results show that disqualifying messages generate a greater negative emotional load. However, contrary to expectations, constructive messages showed a higher tendency to be shared and were considered more appropriate for dissemination. Additionally, although women exhibited more intense negative emotional reactions than men to disqualifying messages, this difference was not statistically significant. Therefore, although hate speech reinforces group identities, this study suggests that group cohesion may be linked to more constructive forms of communication within the context of social media

Host plant switching and viral infections reshape the microbiome of the aphid vector Aphis gossypii

    No full text
Insect-associated microbiomes constitute a crucial component of the insect physiological fitness, with potential implications for the performance of pest vectors, and consequently, for crop health. However, the effects of the transition between host plants and feeding on virus-infected plants remain unclear. In this study, we examined the bacterial community structure and composition of the cotton-melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, in response to feeding on different cucurbit species and on melon-infected plants with either persistent (Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus, CABYV), non-persistent (Watermelon mosaic virus, WMV), or mixed viral infections. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, we found that bacterial diversity was higher in aphids feeding on melon compared to cucumber, and was re-established when returned to melon. This microbiome structure alteration was mainly due to shifts in the relative abundance of facultative symbionts, such as Arsenophonus and Sphingomonas. Furthermore, viral infections significantly reduced microbiome diversity compared to that in healthy plants, with the lowest diversity observed in aphids feeding on plants co-infected with CABYV and WMV. Notably, a strong negative correlation between Buchnera and Arsenophonus abundance was identified and validated by qPCR in those viruliferous aphids, suggesting a compensatory mechanism, possibly modulated by viral infections. This study underlines shifts in the aphid microbiome, which could provide insights for further investigation of microbial resource-based solutions to control aphid pests and associated viral diseases in agriculture

This work was created with the aim of recovering and preserving the traditional remedies used in Suera during the 20th century. This was a particularly significant period for the municipality, marked by a sharp decline in population, the lack of a local pharmacy, and the difficulties in accessing medicines, aggravated by the effects of the Civil War and the post-war period. Faced with this reality, the population was forced to seek alternatives based on home remedies and the medicinal plants they had at their disposal. The work analyzes the health and social situation of Suera during those years, identifies the main ailments of the population, and documents the natural remedies used. It also studies the environment of the Espadà range, its landscape, climate, vegetation, history, etc. And includes a catalog of the most relevant medicinal plants traditionally used. In addition, it offers a reflection on the connection between nature and health and on the people's capacity to adapt to find solutions with scarce resources. All the work is developed with an academic, historical, and health perspective, also thanks to the collaboration of professional people. But, above all, it is based on oral sources and the wisdom transmitted from generation to generation, which constitute the authentic living nucleus of this final degree project
