Vulnerability to anergia in rodents: individual differences, genetic dopamine depletion and the role of the cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalMotivated behavior is characterized by a high degree of activity, vigor, or persistence. Nucleus Accumbens (NAcb) dopamine (DA) plays an important role in behavioral activation and effort-related decision-making. Anergia, fatigue, psychomotor slowing and effort-related choices is a dysfunctional motivational set of symptoms that appears in patients with major depressive disorders, Parkinson’s disease and other neuropsychiatric disorders. The study of individual differences in vulnerability to these symptoms is of key importance to establish therapeutic procedures and preventive strategies, as well as to study the role of the cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) as a marker of neuroprotection in behavioral and effort-related decision making. We have employed different animal models, and different behavioral paradigms of effort-related decision-making with translational potential to characterize these symptoms. In conclusion, as a translational outcome of the current thesis is that could help to understand the vulnerability to surfer anergia or fatigue in different types of subjects.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi

Taking advantage of zoophytophagous-induced plant defenses to improve pest management in horticultural crops

    No full text
Compendi d'articlesThe growing global demand for food and the increasing challenges posed by climate change call for the development of innovative and sustainable strategies to enhance crop resilience against biotic and abiotic stressors. Harnessing natural plant defense mechanisms presents a promising alternative to conventional pest management, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. This thesis explores the role of zoophytophagous predators and herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) in strengthening plant defenses and improving pest management. We investigate Nesidiocoris tenuis, a biological control agent, and its ability to enhance constitutive resistance in tomato plants. Our findings reveal that N. tenuis feeding induces the formation of type IV glandular trichomes and acylsugar production, mediated by jasmonic acid signaling, thereby improving resistance against whiteflies. Additionally, we assess the effects of (Z)-3-hexenyl propanoate [(Z)-3-HP], a green leaf volatile, on sweet pepper plants. Our findings reveal that (Z)-3-HP exposure upregulates key defense-related genes, enhances resistance to herbivorous pests and abiotic stress, boosts antioxidant activity, and improves plant adaptability to water-deficit conditions. By integrating natural enemies and HIPVs, this research advances sustainable pest management strategies that reinforce plant resilience while reducing environmental impact.

    No full text
This doctoral thesis aims to shed light on the challenges faced in the practice of Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH). The main hypothesis is that the UNE 153010:2012 standard does not fully address real-world issues, particularly regarding subtitle positioning, character identification, sound effects, and linguistic considerations in contexts of language coexistence, such as Valencian and Spanish. Through a descriptive and experimental approach, the study explores potential expansions to the standard, including the use of colours to identify characters in programs with multiple speakers, the representation of silences and the management of language changes in bilingual regions. Additionally, it examines whether problem-solving strategies differ between professionals and students in training, aiming to improve the standard and promote more inclusive and contextually adapted subtitling in multilingual settings.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci

Multimodal Uses of YouTube Videos in English for Medicine

    No full text
The internet facilitates free access to video platforms that address specialized topics in a way that is accessible to a non-expert audience. However, little research has focused on the pedagogical use of videos for English language learning. This study therefore aimed to examine: (1) the multimodal characteristics of an instructional YouTube video, and second, (2) how an ESP teacher used a video to explain opinion or persuasive essays to students taking a bachelor's degree in medicine. A multimodal discourse analysis of the YouTube instructional video was conducted with the aid of the GRAPE-MARS software. In addition, a guided interview with the teacher unveiled the criteria for video selection and how he integrated the audio-visual material into his class. Results demonstrated that the teacher's role is essential in raising students' awareness of multimodal resources. Furthermore, the use and combination of modes could serve as effective criteria for selecting materials

    No full text
The object of the thesis is the link between communication for social change (CCS) and instrumental rationality (IR) in both the practical and epistemological spheres. In practice, the link is revealed in the strategic communication dilemmas of some of the social movements active in Spain between 2013 and 2019, such as the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca, PAH). Although the CCS, after the global protests of 2011, including those of the 15M in Spain, opened up to new actors who communicate strategically in the central public sphere, some of its approaches, such as cultural efficacy, contest IR from inherited epistemological assumptions. In the new scenario, it is necessary to rethink IR without renouncing the critical-dialogical legacy. To this end, an epistemological program for the CCS is outlined based on the distinction between its hermeneutical, nomological and technical moments.Programa de Doctorat en Estudis Internacionals de Pau, Conflictes i Desenvolupamen

Physical Interaction and Viewpoint Optimization in Active Video Games: A User Experience and f-Divergence-Based Approach

    No full text
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThe incorporation of active technologies into video games has fostered the development of new forms of physical interaction, particularly in controlled environments such as treadmills. This thesis analyzes and proposes improvements to the user experience in running applications through exergames, without requiring additional hardware. First, different running applications that combine playful and athletic elements are compared, revealing that video games with narrative structures and interactive incentives elicit higher levels of immersion, competence, and flow than traditional simulators. Subsequently, the gameplay experience is evaluated when using the same exergame on the floor and on a treadmill. The results indicate that treadmill use increases the level of challenge and concentration while maintaining a positive experience in both conditions. Finally, an automatic model for viewpoint selection in three-dimensional environments is introduced, based on divergences from information theory. This approach enhances scene visibility and composition by dynamically and adaptively highlighting key elements. The results of this research contribute new strategies for optimizing both interaction and visualization in active video games, with potential applications in health, physical training, and extended reality.Programa de Doctorat en Informàtic

    No full text
Los resultados son preocupantes, se evidencia la necesidad de consolidar el cuidado mediante indicadores y estandarizaciónCare management in Chile, recognized since 1997, gave nurses a strategic role in the hospital structure, especially after the Health Reform of 2000. This thesis analyzed its influence through four studies. The first one evaluated the trend of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, showing an annual increase of 2%. The second examined bloodstream infections linked to central venous catheters, identifying a significant increasing trend at the national level. The third studied the prevalence of pressure ulcers, finding a year-on-year increase of 11.33%. Finally, the fourth, of a qualitative nature, explored the perceptions of nurse managers, highlighting challenges, risks and the need for standardization. Overall, the findings show a sustained increase in nursing-sensitive indicators, which demonstrates the importance of consolidating tools that strengthen the professional role and give greater visibility to care management in the hospital structure.

Under the Sign of Trauma: An Analysis of William Faulkner’s 1929-1932 Novels

    No full text
Doctorat internacionalThis dissertation explores the dimensions of trauma in William Faulkner’s most experimental body of work written between 1929 and 1932. Interrogating trauma as a thematic concern and a formal strategy, I devise a tripartite structure to synchronically analyze its psychological, social, and aesthetic manifestations in the novelist's major novels. Specifically, this interdisciplinary analysis foregrounds the psychological expressions of suffering in Faulkner’s protagonists; situates individual distress within institutional frameworks; and locates the novelist’s strategies close to the formal mechanisms structuring traumatization. In its conclusions, this project identifies a poetics of trauma in Faulkner’s fiction. My reading brings into focus the author’s psychological intuition and considers new motivations behind his formal experimentation. Ultimately, by approaching trauma as both a clinical and formal entity, I establish a continuum between polarized views of trauma as either a biological reality or an aesthetic construct.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
