    A Brief Treatise for a Good Death: Confessions del savi peccadorand its Context

    A partir de la revisión del concepto artes moriendi, se propone una definición más amplia de este género, que vaya más allá de las conocidísimas CP y QS, consideradas “canónicas”. Con ello, se da entrada a otras obras del siglo XV de preparación para bien morir, que se difundieron solas o dentro de composiciones mayores. Es el caso de las Confessions del savi peccador, que Fàbrega ya incluía en su listado de artes moriendi en catalán. El estudio de sus testimonios conservados nos muestra que en algún caso la obra tuvo un proceso de “literaturización”: un personaje tiene una visión (otro de los géneros estrella) en la que ve a Jesucristo y le pide que bendiga las confesiones. Un tono de mayor realidad ofrece algún otro ejemplar que cita como protagonista de la visión a Joan Fort, cartujo valenciano con fama de santidad y autor de un Liber revelationum. Las Confessions, como obra exenta, también formó parte de volúmenes misceláneos junto con otras piezas del mismo o parecido argumento (tentaciones, pecado, confesión, muerte). Esta circunstancia explica por qué se copia en uno de esos códices un fragmento del Segon del Chrestià de Eiximenis.Abstract: Building upon a reassessment of the concept of ars moriendi, this study proposes a broader definition of the genre, extending beyond the well-known CP and QS, traditionally regarded as “canonical.” This expanded framework allows for the inclusion of other fifteenth-century works dedicated to the preparation for a good death, which circulated either independently or as part of more extensive compositions. Among these is the Confessions del savi peccador, a text that Fàbrega had already listed among the ars moriendi works in Catalan. The analysis of the preserved testimonies reveals that, in some cases, the work underwent a process of “literarization”: a character experiences a vision (another highly popular genre) in which he sees Jesus Christ and implores Him to bless the confessions. In an effort to heighten realism, certain versions introduce Joan Fort, a Carthusian from Valencia renowned for his sanctity and the author of a Liber revelationum, as the main character of the vision. As a standalone work, the Confessions was also included in miscellaneous volumes alongside other pieces dealing with similar themes (temptation, sin, confession, death). This context explains the presence of a fragment from the Segon del Chrestià by Eiximenis in one such codex

    Doctorat internacionalEsta tesis doctoral aborda la posibilidad de proporcionar una audiodescripción (AD) más inmersiva mediante la combinación de descripciones objetivas y subjetivas. Para ello, la investigación se articula en dos partes: una primera fase descriptiva y una segunda fase experimental. En la primera fase descriptiva se compila un corpus de AD para detallar qué sistemas de signos, modos o códigos de significación configuran los guiones audiodescriptivos (GAD). Según los primeros datos descriptivos, los GAD se componen de cuatro fuentes de información: el movimiento, la iconografía, los cambios espaciotemporales y los elementos gráficos. A partir de estos datos, la fase descriptiva busca también identificar si las AD del corpus son objetivas o subjetivas. Los resultados descriptivos indican que en las AD coexiste información objetiva y subjetiva. A continuación, en la fase experimental se busca, en primer lugar, analizar los patrones de atención de personas normovidentes mediante un dispositivo de seguimiento ocular o eye-tracker con el objetivo de proponer un GAD experimental alternativo. De acuerdo con los resultados, los sistemas de signos o códigos que detecta el eye-tracker son los mismos que los del corpus de AD. Sin embargo, parece existir un sesgo de atención sistemático: los cambios espaciotemporales son la fuente de información que más veces atrae la mirada de los participantes, seguida del movimiento, la iconografía, y, por último, los elementos textuales. Finalmente, la fase experimental utiliza un sensor de ritmo cardíaco con personas con deficiencias visuales para analizar la combinación de descripciones objetivas y subjetivas que resulta más inmersiva para los usuarios. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, se propone que una AD inmersiva es posible mediante la descripción objetiva de los elementos gráficos, la descripción subjetiva de los cambios espaciotemporales, y una descripción tanto objetiva como subjetiva del movimiento y la iconografía.This doctoral thesis addresses the possibility of providing a more immersive audio description (AD) by combining objective and subjective descriptions. To this end, the research is structured into two parts: a first descriptive phase and a second experimental phase. In the first descriptive phase, an AD corpus is compiled to detail what sign systems, modes, or meaning codes configurate AD scripts. According to the initial descriptive data, AD mainly relies on four sources of information: movement, iconography, spatiotemporal changes, and graphic elements. Based on this data, the descriptive phase also aims to identify whether ADs are objective or subjective in the corpus. The descriptive results indicate that objectivity and subjectivity coexist in ADs. Subsequently, in the experimental phase, the first goal is to analyze sighted participants’ attention patterns recorded using an eye-tracking device in order to propose an alternative experimental AD script. According to the results, the sign systems or meaning codes detected by the eye-tracker are the same as those identified in the AD corpus. However, there appears to be a systematic attention bias: spatiotemporal changes attract participants’ gaze most frequently, followed by movement, iconography, and lastly, textual elements on screen. Finally, the experimental phase employs a heart rate sensor on partially sighted participants to analyze which combination of objective and subjective descriptions results in a more immersive experience for users. Based on the results, it is proposed that an immersive AD is possible through the objective description of graphic elements, the subjective description of spatiotemporal changes, and a combination of both objective and subjective descriptions of movement and iconography.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci

    Unexpected Hydricity of a Bis-Carbene Iridium Complex Provides Insight into Electronic Structure Impacts on Hydride Donor Ability

    The hydricity (ΔG°H–), or hydride donor ability, of a transition metal complex is a thermodynamic parameter which can aid in the design and interpretation of various catalytic reactions that involve hydride transfer as a key step. In an attempt to generate a strong hydride donor, the bis-carbene ligand 3,3′-methylenebis(1-methyl-imidazol-2-ylidene) (“bis-mim”) was installed in an iridium hydride complex, [Cp*Ir(bis-mim)H]+. Experimental and computational studies show that [Cp*Ir(bis-mim)H]+ is actually a relatively weak hydride donor, however. To understand why the complex is an unexpectedly weak hydride donor, experimental and computational studies probing the steric and electronic effects on hydricity were conducted. Steric factors had a minimal impact on thermodynamic hydricity but dampened kinetic hydricity. The poor thermodynamic hydride donor ability can be attributed to an electronic structure that results in relatively long Cp*−Ir bonds, an unusually high Ir–H BDFE and pKa values that have an outsized influence on thermochemical cycles for hydricity

    Multifactorial stress combination as a driving force in the decline of uni- and multicellular organisms

    Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis doctoral thesis investigates how plants respond to multifactorial environmental stress conditions (MFSC) caused by climate change, focusing on both the crop Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Physiological, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses revealed that stress complexity leads to declining photosynthetic performance, increased oxidative damage, and metabolic reprogramming in tomato. Jasmonic acid was shown to be crucial for mitigating oxidative stress. In C. reinhardtii, MFSC impaired growth and chlorophyll content, with the ROS-deficient mutant rbo1 showing reduced extracellular H₂O₂ and increased cell aggregation. Transcriptomic profiling identified conserved stress-responsive genes across species, suggesting a shared molecular signature. Proteomic and metabolomic data indicated adaptations prioritizing redox balance and osmoprotection. Overall, this work highlights conserved stress response pathways in unicellular and multicellular systems, offering targets for enhancing crop resilience.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie

    Las emisiones odoríferas de las estaciones depuradoras de aguas residuales (EDARs) constituyen un importante desafío ambiental debido a su impacto en la calidad de vida de las comunidades cercanas. Estas emisiones, originadas principalmente en fuentes pasivas superficiales como tanques abiertos, incluyen compuestos como el sulfuro de hidrógeno y amoníaco, los cuales son detectables incluso a bajas concentraciones. El presente estudio aborda el modelado de la dispersión de contaminantes mediante Dinámica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD), empleando el software OpenFOAM. Se modelan las fuentes pasivas mediante la analogía con cavidades bidimensionales, con el objetivo de desarrollar un modelo analítico que pueda integrarse en simulaciones de microescala urbana, reduciendo el coste computacional al simplificar la representación de las fuentes emisoras. Además, se incluye el uso de redes neuronales entrenadas con resultados CFD para predicciones rápidas, lo que permite realizar estudios paramétricos extensos y optimizar la gestión de las emisiones odoríferas.Odorous emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have low detection thresholds, causing discomfort in nearby communities. These emissions mainly originate from passive surface sources, whose volatilization depends on environmental factors. This study models pollutant dispersion using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in OpenFOAM, representing passive sources as two-dimensional cavities. The emission rate is analyzed based on geometric and physical variables to develop an analytical model that optimizes microscale simulations. To reduce computational cost, neural networks trained with CFD results are employed, enabling efficient predictions of wind fields and pollutant concentrations.     Study and development of low-GWP mixtures for commercial condensing units and ultra-low temperature systems

    Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis PhD thesis develops low- or negligible-GWP refrigerant mixtures to improve energy efficiency and reduce refrigerants’ GWP in two key areas: medium-capacity CO2 systems and ultra-low temperature (ULT) autocascade systems. For CO2 systems, small additions of secondary refrigerants enhance energy performance. Experimentally, the mixture CO2/R152a achieved up to 11.2% COP improvement in basic cycle, whereas with advanced configurations the improvements were around 3%. With parallel compression cycle, new separation phenomena are unveiled. In the ULT segment, the thesis presents the first full thermodynamic analysis of an autocascade system using a novel calculation method based on liquid density. The optimal mixture (R600a/R1150 [70/30%]) and system enhancements, such as a capillary optimization, compressor replacement and recuperative low-temperature heat exchanger, increased COP from 0.144 to 0.338. Overall, this work proposes efficient, lower-impact alternatives to high-GWP refrigerants in two critical application segments.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material

    Physical activity induced functional and structural changes in the Hippocampus and the Reward System

    Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis thesis explores the effects of physical activity (PA) on the brain of young adults through four empirical studies that examine both structural and functional changes associated with regular and acute exercise. By combining accelerometry, self-reports, cognitive testing, and neuroimaging techniques, the relationship between PA, mood, cognition, and individual variables such as personality and physical fitness is investigated. The results show that regions such as the hippocampus and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are particularly sensitive to activity and sedentary levels, and that this relationship is modulated by individual differences. Furthermore, immediate effects of acute exercise on medial temporal lobe connectivity are observed, along with a reduction in hippocampal volume after only 14 days of inactivity. Taken together, these findings highlight the high brain plasticity in young adults and the relevance of regular PA for neurocognitive health.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi

    Analysis, development and experimental evaluation of ultra-low temperature cascade refrigeration systems with natural refrigerants

    Doctorat internacionalRefrigeration is essential for preserving sensitive products by maintaining temperatures below ambient. Vapor compression cycles are the standard method, but their efficiency drops as the temperature lift increases. Ultra-low temperature (ULT) applications, such as vaccine or biomedical storage, require significant temperature differences, making conventional systems inefficient and environmentally harmful. This thesis proposes a more sustainable solution using a cascade vapor compression cycle with natural refrigerants R290 (propane) and R170 (ethane). A detailed theoretical analysis identifies critical points, particularly at the expansion valve inlet, addressed by incorporating an interstage heat exchanger. An experimental prototype confirms the theoretical results, achieving COP improvements of up to 40 % at −70 °C and 20 % at −80 °C compared to the R404A/R23 baseline. The natural refrigerant pair also delivers greater cooling capacity with a lower mass flow rate and reduces CO₂-equivalent emissions by 37 %.
