Geometrical evaluation of additive manufacturing techniques for tactile graphic production
Tactile graphics (TGs) are visual representations for individuals with visual impairments. Traditionally, the fabrication of TGs has been limited to specific production systems. However, low-cost additive manufacturing (AM) techniques now enable the rapid and economical production of TGs, allowing for broader applications. This study analyzes different AM techniques such as SLS (selective laser sintering), SLA (stereolithography), and FDM (fused deposition modeling), for manufacturing typical features found in TGs. The study’s main goal is to identify the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of each AM technique in the low-cost production of TGs by non-expert users. For this purpose, several TG designs including Braille notations and other symbols are prepared and the manufactured TGs are inspected using a digital microscope, a 3D scanner, a profile projector and a profilometer. The results show that FDM is a cost-effective AM technology for TGs when larger features are used; however, it has significant limitations in reproducing small, detailed tactile elements such as Braille dots or rounded corners. SLS can be a suitable AM technique for outdoor TGs but presents high surface roughness values, which reduces the tactile experience. Finally, SLA offered the best overall performance in terms of accuracy, feature definition, and tactile clarity, making it the preferred option for applications that require precise Braille reproduction. A multimodal rhetorical analysis of the video resume as a professional digital genre: developing students’ multimodal communicative competence

The compendium of articles presented in this research includes the entire process of a genre analysis in order to validate the VR as a professional digital genre. In particular, it undertakes a Multimodal Discourse Analysis with a specific focus on the development of students’ multimodal communicative competence. Furthermore, it delves into the complex ways in which rhetorical and persuasive strategies as well as different modes of communication contribute to the construction of meaning employed in videos, used to enhance the communicative aim of the VR. Más allá del castigo : el sentido y la práctica de la medida del internamiento en la LO 5/2000
La medida de internamiento prevista en el art. 7 de la Ley Orgánica 5/2000, de 12 de enero, reguladora de la responsabilidad penal de los menores ocupa un relevante protagonismo en nuestro sistema de justicia juvenil. Ciertamente no es la medida de las susceptibles de ser impuestas a los menores que se adopta más por la denominada ahora Sección de Menores del Tribunal de Instancia.
En la presente aportación se pretende ofrecer una respuesta sintética a una serie de preguntas básicas relativas a las medidas de internamiento: ¿qué son?, ¿cómo son?, ¿cuándo se aplican?, ¿dónde? y ¿quiénes son sus protagonistas? Asimismo, se abordarán algunas de las tensiones estructurales y problemáticas aún no resueltas que persisten en torno a su configuración y desarrollo práctico dentro del sistema de justicia juvenil.
Con todo ello, se pretende ofrecer una visión práctica y fundamentada sobre la ejecución de la medida de internamiento, que favorezca una comprensión más profunda y sistemática de la finalidad y del alcance de su aplicación en el marco del derecho penal juvenil español
Porn[Time]: study of cognitive processes related to problematic pornography use
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalCurrently, pornography consumption is one of the most prevalent online activities, increasing scientific interest in understanding its effects. In particular, the possibility of developing a pattern of abusive consumption, i.e., problematic pornography use (PPU), is one of the main concern. Therefore, in recent years, part of the literature has focused on the study of the mechanisms and factors involved in the onset and maintenance of PPU. However, evidence remains scarce, especially regarding the involvement of cognitive processes. This doctoral thesis aims to shed light on this issue by studying the involvement and etiological role of attentional inhibitory control, time perception processes, and subjective sexual arousal in PPU and other online problematic behaviors: gaming disorder and problematic binge-watching. Hacia una audiodescripción inmersiva. Estudio descriptivo, comparativo, multimodal y de recepción experimental sobre la objetividad y subjetividad en audiodescripción
Doctorat internacionalEsta tesis doctoral aborda la posibilidad de proporcionar una audiodescripción (AD) más inmersiva mediante la combinación de descripciones objetivas y subjetivas. Para ello, la investigación se articula en dos partes: una primera fase descriptiva y una segunda fase experimental. En la primera fase descriptiva se compila un corpus de AD para detallar qué sistemas de signos, modos o códigos de significación configuran los guiones audiodescriptivos (GAD). Según los primeros datos descriptivos, los GAD se componen de cuatro fuentes de información: el movimiento, la iconografía, los cambios espaciotemporales y los elementos gráficos. A partir de estos datos, la fase descriptiva busca también identificar si las AD del corpus son objetivas o subjetivas. Los resultados descriptivos indican que en las AD coexiste información objetiva y subjetiva. A continuación, en la fase experimental se busca, en primer lugar, analizar los patrones de atención de personas normovidentes mediante un dispositivo de seguimiento ocular o eye-tracker con el objetivo de proponer un GAD experimental alternativo. De acuerdo con los resultados, los sistemas de signos o códigos que detecta el eye-tracker son los mismos que los del corpus de AD. Sin embargo, parece existir un sesgo de atención sistemático: los cambios espaciotemporales son la fuente de información que más veces atrae la mirada de los participantes, seguida del movimiento, la iconografía, y, por último, los elementos textuales. Finalmente, la fase experimental utiliza un sensor de ritmo cardíaco con personas con deficiencias visuales para analizar la combinación de descripciones objetivas y subjetivas que resulta más inmersiva para los usuarios. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, se propone que una AD inmersiva es posible mediante la descripción objetiva de los elementos gráficos, la descripción subjetiva de los cambios espaciotemporales, y una descripción tanto objetiva como subjetiva del movimiento y la iconografía.This doctoral thesis addresses the possibility of providing a more immersive audio description (AD) by combining objective and subjective descriptions. To this end, the research is structured into two parts: a first descriptive phase and a second experimental phase. In the first descriptive phase, an AD corpus is compiled to detail what sign systems, modes, or meaning codes configurate AD scripts. According to the initial descriptive data, AD mainly relies on four sources of information: movement, iconography, spatiotemporal changes, and graphic elements. Based on this data, the descriptive phase also aims to identify whether ADs are objective or subjective in the corpus. The descriptive results indicate that objectivity and subjectivity coexist in ADs. Subsequently, in the experimental phase, the first goal is to analyze sighted participants’ attention patterns recorded using an eye-tracking device in order to propose an alternative experimental AD script. According to the results, the sign systems or meaning codes detected by the eye-tracker are the same as those identified in the AD corpus. However, there appears to be a systematic attention bias: spatiotemporal changes attract participants’ gaze most frequently, followed by movement, iconography, and lastly, textual elements on screen. Finally, the experimental phase employs a heart rate sensor on partially sighted participants to analyze which combination of objective and subjective descriptions results in a more immersive experience for users. Based on the results, it is proposed that an immersive AD is possible through the objective description of graphic elements, the subjective description of spatiotemporal changes, and a combination of both objective and subjective descriptions of movement and iconography.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
Evaluation of the effectiveness of a projection-based augmented reality exposure treatment system and study of attentional biases in cockroach phobia using eye tracking.
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis thesis primarily aims to assess the effectiveness of a projection-based augmented reality exposure therapy (P-ARET) for treating cockroach phobia (CP) and to examine attentional biases (AB) in CP using eye-tracking technology. Chapter 1 presents a systematic review focused on AB measured by eye-tracking in specific phobias. Chapter 2 presents validation of a standardized set of animal images, including a representative number of cockroach images, and Chapter 3 reports the results of an experimental study comparing AB in CP versus healthy controls. Chapters 4 to 6 are focused on exploring the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) exposure therapy. Specifically, chapter 4 presents a systematic review focused on the AR for anxiety disorders. Chapter 5 includes a randomized controlled trial (RCT) protocol comparing P-ARET to in vivo and wait-list control conditions, and Chapter 6 presents the preliminary results of this RCT including the assessment of AB change after exposure treatment.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi
Single-pixel microscopy: principles, new sampling approaches and applications
Doctorat internacionalThis thesis introduces the concept of single-pixel imaging (SPI) to optical microscopy, designing, implementing and evaluating SPI-based microscopes for use in situations where camera-based systems are ineffective due to spectral constraints, low photon counts and high costs. To this end, three key challenges are addressed: optical sectioning, lateral resolution and acquisition time. Structured-illumination microscopy (SIM) is employed to enhance optical sectioning by projecting high-spatial-frequency fringes and to improve resolution by combining super-resolution patterns with conventional ones used in SPI. Additionally, the work extends microscopy to computational optical scanning holography (COSH) with optical sectioning, enabling fast volumetric acquisitions and mitigating out-of-focus blur. Finally, the thesis proposes a sampling-pattern preselection algorithm guided by an analysis of sampling patterns within the constraints of the optical system. Low-temperature, high-throughput spatial atomic layer deposition of NiOx nanocrystalline thin films from [Ni(ipki)2]
Spatial atomic layer deposition (SALD) is a recent ALD variant enabling much faster deposition rates, even at atmospheric pressure, making it ideal for scalable, low-cost devices. NiOx, a transparent p-type oxide, is widely used in emerging technologies like perovskite solar cells. However, no suitable SALD process for NiO thin films has been reported so far. In this work, we present the deposition of nanocrystalline NiOx thin films via SALD using a recent Ni precursor not yet explored for the ALD of NiO, namely, bis(4-(isopropylamino)pent-3en-2-onato)nickel(II) or [Ni(ipki)2]. O2 has been used as coreactant, with higher deposition rates being achieved if H2O is added to the O2 flow. A narrow ALD window has been obtained between 230 °C and 250 °C, where a GPC of 0.023 nm is observed. This corresponds to a deposition rate of 1.4 nm/min, which is 2 to 10 times faster than the rates reported for conventional ALD of NiO thin films. Remarkably, the growth onset of NiOx starts around only 170 °C. The transmittance of the films reaches nearly 97 % in the visible for 55 nm thick films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed a high homogeneity of the films. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies confirm the presence of a cubic NiOx crystalline phase. Finally, NiOx films have been deposited on Ag nanowire networks, demonstrating the possibility of depositing homogeneous and conformal coatings with this new process

Neural and behavioural correlates of maladaptive emotion regulation in subclinical anxiety
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalMaladaptive emotion regulation is a major facet of anxiety disorders, contributing to their development and reinforcement of symptoms. However, we still lack understanding of how these phenomena are related to self-blaming emotions, sleep and monoaminergic neuromodulation of brain functions. The current thesis provided insights into maladaptive regulation of self-blaming emotions in subclinically anxious individuals, highlighting crucial contributions from the social semantic system in the superior anterior temporal lobes, particularly its guilt-dependent coupling with subgenual anterior cingulate cortex. The discussed frontal area additionally acted as a region connecting emotional dysregulation with poor sleep. The contributions of the monoaminergic systems were in turn present in the form of increased activity of the noradrenergic centers, and dysconnectivity of the dopaminergic areas with the fronto-parietal control network. Combined, the results of the thesis highlight the complex nature of anxiety disorders, pointing at the important interplay of semantic cognition, neuromodulatory processes and cognitive emotion regulation.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi
