Physical Interaction and Viewpoint Optimization in Active Video Games: A User Experience and f-Divergence-Based Approach
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThe incorporation of active technologies into video games has fostered the development of new forms of physical interaction, particularly in controlled environments such as treadmills. This thesis analyzes and proposes improvements to the user experience in running applications through exergames, without requiring additional hardware. First, different running applications that combine playful and athletic elements are compared, revealing that video games with narrative structures and interactive incentives elicit higher levels of immersion, competence, and flow than traditional simulators. Subsequently, the gameplay experience is evaluated when using the same exergame on the floor and on a treadmill. The results indicate that treadmill use increases the level of challenge and concentration while maintaining a positive experience in both conditions. Finally, an automatic model for viewpoint selection in three-dimensional environments is introduced, based on divergences from information theory. This approach enhances scene visibility and composition by dynamically and adaptively highlighting key elements. The results of this research contribute new strategies for optimizing both interaction and visualization in active video games, with potential applications in health, physical training, and extended reality.Programa de Doctorat en Informàtic
Vigor-inducing effects of dopamine transport (DAT) blockers: studies using different types of behavioral activation and effort-based decision-making tasks in rodents.
Doctorat internacionalDopamine transporter (DAT) blockers increase dopamine (DA) availability by inhibiting reuptake, enhancing dopaminergic activity, and are being explored as treatments for motivational deficits in psychiatric and neurological conditions. The mesolimbic DA system, particularly the ventral tegmental area to nucleus accumbens pathway, regulates motivation and effort-based decision-making. Dysfunction in this pathway is linked to symptoms like anergia and fatigue, common in depression, which often resist treatment. This thesis focuses on developing and validating mice models to study effort-related behaviors and test novel DAT blockers. Chapter 1 explores decision-making under varying reinforcer and effort conditions, adapting rat paradigms for mice. Chapter 2 validates these models using bupropion and examines the role of CDNF in motivation. Chapter 3 assesses new DAT inhibitors (CE-123, CE-158, MK-26) compared to modafinil and cocaine, analyzing their effects on anxiety and locomotion. These findings demonstrate the therapeutic potential of DAT blockers for addressing motivational dysfunctions.
No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Neonates experience pain during routine procedures such as heel pricks. In this study, the efficacy of a new non-pharmacological analgesic strategy, called Triple Combination, which combines the administration of expressed breast milk, sucking and facilitated tucking, is evaluated and compared to Tetanalgesia. Design: single-blind randomised clinical trial. Results: The sample consisted of 128 newborns, of which 54.7% were male. The groups were homogeneous in the baseline assessment. The PIPP scale showed significantly greater pain reduction in the Triple Combination group than in the Tetanalgesia group (p=0.033). However, the NIPS scale showed no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.932). Conclusions: The findings support Triple Combination as a viable alternative for managing neonatal pain, especially in cases where Tetanalgesia is not possible.
The general objective of this doctoral thesis is to holistically understand the breathing methodologies implemented in trombone teaching. The proposed methodological design is framed within a mixed-method research paradigm, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to achieve a deeper understanding of the problem. First, a comparative analysis is conducted to classify the breathing methodologies employed in trombone teaching, based on specialized literature, through a hermeneutic study. The second phase identifies the main pedagogical breathing approaches implemented in higher education trombone instruction within a real-world context, using an observational and descriptive field study with a pedagogical and interpretative approach. The results reveal the coexistence of diverse, and even opposing, pedagogical approaches to breathing. The use of ICT tools, such as the MAXQDA software employed in this study, opens new research horizons in the field of performing arts educationPrograma de Doctorat en Educaci
The object of the thesis is the link between communication for social change (CCS) and instrumental rationality (IR) in both the practical and epistemological spheres. In practice, the link is revealed in the strategic communication dilemmas of some of the social movements active in Spain between 2013 and 2019, such as the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca, PAH). Although the CCS, after the global protests of 2011, including those of the 15M in Spain, opened up to new actors who communicate strategically in the central public sphere, some of its approaches, such as cultural efficacy, contest IR from inherited epistemological assumptions. In the new scenario, it is necessary to rethink IR without renouncing the critical-dialogical legacy. To this end, an epistemological program for the CCS is outlined based on the distinction between its hermeneutical, nomological and technical moments.Programa de Doctorat en Estudis Internacionals de Pau, Conflictes i Desenvolupamen
Spectroscopic matching in semitransparent solar cells with I–Br mixed halide perovskite and DMD electrode
Balancing light transmittance and power conversion efficiency (PCE) remains a major challenge for semi-transparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs), particularly for applications in building integration and agrivoltaics. In this work, dielectric–metal–dielectric (DMD) electrodes based on WO3/Ag/WO3 as a high-performance alternative to conventional semi-transparent gold (Au) contacts were integrated into bromide-rich formamidinium lead halide perovskites, with a systematic study across halide compositions from pure bromide to pure iodide. The DMD electrodes consistently enhanced photovoltaic performance and optical quality, achieving an average visible transmittance (AVT) of 43.63%, light utilization efficiency (LUE) of
3.05%, and a PCE of 7% for FAPbBr3-based cells. An optimal composition with 47% bromide yielded a balanced performance with 24% of
average visible transmittance (AVT), 2.12% LUE and B9% PCE. Rather than simply increasing bromide content to widen the bandgap and
enhance transparency, this study shows that there is an optimal spectral alignment that maximizes transmittance, photocurrent extraction and color. In addition, replacing Au with WO3/Ag/WO3 significantly reduces the environmental footprint, as confirmed by life cycle assessment. This study highlights a photonic design approach to advancing efficient, sustainable, and visually appealing ST-PSCs for next-generation energy applications
A Comprehensive Approach to Language-Related Episodes (LREs) in English-Medium Instruction: Typology, Multimodal Nature, and Lecturers’ Beliefs
Doctorat internacionalThis study explores the use of Language-Related Episodes (LREs) in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) settings: spontaneous moments when attention shifts from content to language. Through a case study of two lecturers in Mechanical Engineering and Business Management at a Spanish university, it draws on audiovisual recordings and interview data. The study explores the LREs’ typologies, multimodal features, and the lecturers’ beliefs on their practices. Findings indicate that LREs are scarce and call for new categories in the classification of LREs, emphasizing their collaborative and context-specific nature. A multimodal lens highlights the significant role of gestures, gaze, and visuals in reinforcing meaning, while lecturers, however, showed partial awareness of their use of multimodality. The study highlights LREs’ potential to address language barriers, improve communication, and support students’ academic and linguistic development in EMI contexts, and thus, advocates for integrating LRE into EMI teacher training to foster alignment between language and content.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
