The doctoral thesis focuses on the results obtained using a new endovascular system to create arteriovenous fistulas in hemodialysis patients. It is a thesis by a compendium of publications, which includes four papers. One of them is a prospective descriptive study of the outcomes during the first year of follow-up after the procedure. Another is a prospective comparison of the results of these endovascular fistulas versus surgically created fistulas over a one-year follow-up period. The third is a systematic review of the literature, highlighting the gender disparity observed in the use of these devices, despite being innovative methods. The final publication is a clinical case that illustrates the potential benefits of these minimally invasive systems.

    No full text
This work takes a journey through the history of the Gypsy People from the general aspects –Spain– to the particular –Castellón de la plana–. The history of the gypsies in Castellón has happened parallel to the rest of the territory: pilgrimage, settlement, control and chase were consubstantial to the region. This thesis investigates the causes of persistent repulse and discrimination, protected from a legal point of view but with a social and economic background that has fed stereotypes and negative image of gypsy ethnic group: wandering, cheaters, lazy… which still remain today. The Gypsies history in Spain can be summed up saying that they were accepted as pilgrims, rejected as neighbours and discriminated like a Spaniards. The campaigns started in the 21st century by Gypsy Organisation has emphasized understanding their culture. These are new times and new perspectives, to which we hope to contribute through our study.Programa de Doctorat en Història i Estudis Contemporani

Attempts to detect retrotransposition and de novo deletion of Alus and other dispersed repeats at specific loci in the human genome

    No full text
Dispersed repeat elements contribute to genome instability by de novo insertion and unequal recombination between repeats. To study the dynamics of these processes, we have developed single DNA molecule approaches to detect de novo insertions at a single locus and Alu-mediated deletions at two different loci in human genomic DNA. Validation experiments showed these approaches could detect insertions and deletions at frequencies below 10(-6) per cell. However, bulk analysis of germline (sperm) and somatic DNA showed no evidence for genuine mutant molecules, placing an upper limit of insertion and deletion rates of 2 x 10(-7) and 3 x 10(-7), respectively, in the individuals tested. Such re-arrangements at these loci therefore occur at a rate lower than that detectable by the most sensitive methods currently available.Peer Reviewe

    No full text
This research explores how the Jaume I University (Castellón de la Plana) promotes inclusive education from the perspective of autistic students, using the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Through a qualitative methodology and seven studies, various barriers to their participation and learning are identified, as well as facilitators aligned with the UDL approach. Although faculty members display a proactive attitude, they often lack knowledge on how to implement more inclusive practices. Support services play a key role, although greater coordination among stakeholders is needed to ensure that their functions are truly effective. The training initiative Encuentros fosters dialogue among students, faculty, and specialists to collectively build knowledge and advance toward a more inclusive university. The research concludes that UJI demonstrates a commitment to inclusion, while also highlighting the need for stronger institutional support to drive such initiatives as part of its university model.Programa de Doctorat en Educaci

Inter-limb neuromuscular activity of the gastrocnemius muscle during unilateral and bilateral explosive jumps and relationship with jump performance

    No full text
Understanding the neuromuscular demands of explosive tasks is essential for enhancing performance and reducing injury risk. This study analyzed inter-limb activation of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius during take-off and landing phases of bilateral and unilateral countermovement jumps (CMJ) and horizontal jumps (HJ), examining its relationship with inter-limb asymmetry and performance. Twenty-six physically active participants performed CMJ and HJ tasks while bilateral surface electromyography was recorded from both gastrocnemius heads. Jump performance was evaluated using flight time (CMJ) and distance (HJ), and asymmetry indices were computed between dominant and non-dominant limbs. Results showed significantly greater muscle activity during take-off than landing across all conditions (p < 0.05). During CMJ landings, the medial gastrocnemius was more active than the lateral, with no activation differences found between unilateral and bilateral jumps. A moderate positive correlation was observed between CMJ performance and bilateral take-off asymmetry (r = 0.43, p = 0.02). Conversely, greater activation in the non-dominant gastrocnemius was negatively associated with performance in both CMJ and HJ (r = –0.39 to –0.48, p < 0.05). In conclusion, gastrocnemius muscles display phase-specific activation patterns. Moderate asymmetry during take-off may benefit performance, while excessive activation in the non-dominant limb may reflect compensatory strategies detrimental to jump efficiency

    No full text
This dissertation delves into the analysis of the entrepreneurial process that connects the formation of entrepreneurial intention with its manifestation as effective entrepreneurial behavior, considering both commercial and social forms of entrepreneurship. The study proposes a research model that identifies the factors explaining this transition by integrating personal, cognitive, social, and contextual variables. It highlights the role of personal values, cognitive social capital, and triggering events as key elements in the conversion of intention into action. Through a quantitative approach and structural equation modeling analysis (PLS-SEM) applied to entrepreneurs in the Valencian Region, the results show that individualistic values, particularly those oriented toward achievement and power, are significant determinants of entrepreneurial intention. Moreover, the study underscores the importance of specific triggering events, such as innovation orientation and family succession.Programa de Doctorat en Desenvolupament Local i Cooperació Internaciona

Metabolite Profiling and Antioxidant Activities in Seagrass Biomass

    No full text
In this work, metabolite profiling of seeds and antioxidant analysis of fragments of two marine seagrasses, Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa, were carried out to identify metabolite signature involved in seed viability and to evaluate the potential of fragments as a source of bioactive compounds. Using HILIC/QTOF-MS, UHPLC-MS and spectrophotometric analysis, seed metabolites and polyphenols and antioxidant activities, such as those of radical scavenging (RSA), reduction (FRAP, CUPRAC) and complexation (CCA), of rhizome fragments were evaluated. Metabolite comparison between seeds revealed differences across development stages (germinated and non-germinated) and seed types (dormant and non-dormant), providing insights into metabolic activity potentially associated with germination processes and seed viability. Furthermore, polyphenol analysis showed the highest content of caffeic acid in mature leaves (17.00 ± 0.02 µg g−1 dw for P. oceanica and 98.00 ± 0.03 µg g−1 dw for C. nodosa). Total phenolic content was correlated with flavonoids and with reduction and complexation activities. The combination of radical scavenging activity and t1/2 was higher in P. oceanica than C. nodosa and also surpassed the commercial synthetic antioxidant BHA. We conclude P. oceanica and C. nodosa exhibit distinct seed metabolite profiles related to germination and type of seeds, and that fragments are rich in antioxidants, with potential as sustainable sources of bioactive compounds

    No full text
Practice experience plays an essential role in the undergraduate education of nurses. Students' perceptions of their practice environment and the self-perception of their preparedness to work in that environment are highlighted in the literature as relevant factors. A descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational study of undergraduate nursing students at a university in the East of England was conducted to examine participants' perceived level of competence and its relationship to the clinical practice environment. A positive association was found between environment and level of competence. There were significant differences in self-perceived competence between the groups. Nursing students rate their practice environment favourably, and this influences their overall positive perception of their level of competence. Further exploration of these findings in different groups of students would be advisable.
