Impact of early life experiences on effort-based decision-making and mesolimbic CDNF: studies in mice of both sexes
Doctorat internacionalMotivation involves processes that regulate the direction and intensity of behavior, with impairments in its activational component (anergia) being central to several neuropsychiatric disorders. Dopamine signaling in the mesolimbic system, particularly in the nucleus accumbens, plays a key role in effort-related behavior, and vulnerability to motivational dysfunctions may be shaped by early-life experiences, sex, and age. This dissertation uses translational rodent models to examine how early-life manipulations affect effort-based decision-making and related behaviors in male and female mice across the lifespan. Behavioral tasks assessed willingness to exert effort, preference for active reinforcers, and depression-related symptoms. Additionally, the work provides a detailed characterization of the cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) within dopaminergic pathways, focusing on its role in motivation. Overall, the findings highlight how developmental experiences and biological variables influence motivational processes, with implications for identifying vulnerability and resilience and for developing more personalized treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders.
Estas formulaciones confirman el potencial de los PHA como materiales sostenibles para envases, apoyando la economía circularThis thesis addresses the environmental challenge arising from the massive use of conventional plastics through the development of biodegradable materials based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). The main objective is to improve the toughness, ductility, and processability of these biopolymers for short-life packaging applications without compromising their biodegradability. To achieve this, compatibilization strategies based on reactive extrusion were employed, combining PHA with elastomers (TPU, bio-TPE) and biopolymers (PBSA and PCL), using reactive agents to optimize interphase adhesion. The results show that certain formulations significantly increase impact resistance and thermal stability while maintaining biodegradability. Moreover, the materials obtained exhibit good processability through industrial techniques such as injection molding and thermoforming. Overall, this research contributes to the advancement of sustainable bioplastics intended to replace petroleum-derived polymers in the food packaging sector.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material
The Ghosts of Arthurian Romance: A Study of the Influence of the Exemplum in the Middle English Romances Stanzaic Morte Arthur, Sir Amadace, and The Awntyrs off Arthure
Doctorat internacionalBy analysing the ghosts in the Stanzaic Morte Arthur, Sir Amadace, and The Awntyrs off Arthure, this thesis argues that, through hybridisation, the exemplum is capable of transforming didactic materials into romance, entering this genre in the form of framed episodes. Combining intertextual and codicological analysis with scholarship on ghosts and the supernatural, this thesis maps how the ghosts in these romances become part of a shared code, allowing authors and audiences to navigate both pious and social issues. Findings show that romance ghosts expand the didactic import of the exemplum by reframing it as supernatural encounters, and the manuscript contexts of the romances reveal how audiences actively shaped their meaning(s). Moreover, these romance ghosts reveal the maturation of English as a language suitable for more than entertainment. Finally, through the lens of hybridisation, this thesis offers a critical framework transferable to the analysis of other medieval literary works.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
Influence of vehicle–track–bridge–soil interaction on the dynamic behaviour of railway bridges for accurate prediction of their vibratory response
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalRailway transport has experienced a sustained development in recent decades characterised by increases in the travelling speed and the operating capacity of many railway lines. As these conditions are also expected in the long-term, they pose a significant challenge for the infrastructure, as it will have to withstand more demanding conditions. Thus, a thorough understanding of the train-induced vibration problem in railway bridges is key to ensuring the required levels of quality, safety and reliability in these critical structures. However, their dynamic behaviour is complex and is affected by multiple factors, among which the vehicle–track–bridge–soil interaction is particularly important. For this reason, the main objective of this thesis is to investigate its influence on the dynamic response of railway bridges with the aim of providing deeper insight into the phenomena involved and to achieve more accurate predictions of the bridge performance under operating conditions.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material

Improved environmental stability of perovskite films enabled by a one-pot synthesized eco-friendly additive
The long-term instability of metal halide perovskites, such as MAPbI3 and FAPbI3, remains a major obstacle to their commercialization. This study introduces a multifunctional-organic-additive (agent 1), synthesized via a one-pot reaction using ethanol as a green solvent, offering an environmentally benign approach. Agent 1 was incorporated into MAPbI3 films through antisolvent treatment and surface passivation, enhancing both shelf and operational stability. Under moderate humidity (35–45 %), antisolvent-treated films showed only 23 % degradation after ~36 days, compared to 60 % in untreated samples. At higher humidity (55–65 %), passivated films retained 67 % of the original material, while reference films degraded by 97 %. On the other hand, solar cells treated with agent 1 maintained 91 % of their initial efficiency after 60 min of continuous operation. Long-term storage tests (168 h) revealed a 41 % efficiency drop in reference devices, versus 13 % and 29 % in antisolvent- and passivated-treated devices, respectively. Agent 1 also exhibited excellent thermal/chemical stability, with negligible decomposition above 200 ◦C and only 0.35 % weight loss after 24 h at 95 ◦C. Its molecular integrity was confirmed via 1 H NMR after one year. Combining ease of synthesis, environmental safety, and multifunctionality, agent 1 is a promising candidate for industrial-scale stabilization of perovskite solar cells
Stimuli-Responsive NHC-based Pincer Complexes for Catalysis
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis Doctoral Thesis demonstrates the potential of supramolecular and anion‑induced redox interactions as effective tools to endow transition metal pincer complexes with adaptive and reversible control over their electronic properties, and consequently over their catalytic behaviour. Systematic studies on Rh(I), Mn(I), and Pd(II) platforms revealed that these interactions can independently modulate the electronic structure and reactivity in a controlled and reversible manner. The incorporation of the NDI moiety transforms the pincer ligand into a multistimuli-responsive unit that mediates communication between external additives—such as halides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons—and the electronic state of the metal centre. This strategy moves beyond static ligand design and introduces a dynamic approach to catalyst tuning, enabling reversible switching between distinct activity states using mild and easily accessible stimuli. Overall, the study highlights supramolecular and redox-active ligand frameworks as versatile platforms for developing next-generation stimulus-responsive catalysts.
This research analyzes the cultural tensions between China and the West and their impact on the transformation of the hero figure in Zhang Yimou’s cinema. To this end, the cinematic narrative is approached as a contemporary myth, in which the hero—understood as an archetype—serves as a reflection of the Chinese collective imagination. The methodology combines the analysis of non-verbal elements with anthropological fieldwork, allowing for an exploration not only of the films themselves but also of their reception within specific spatial and temporal contexts. Although the findings highlight the complexity of the phenomenon, three key aspects are identified: (1) distinctive traits of the Chinese heroic narrative compared to its Western counterpart, (2) the coexistence of multiple discourses surrounding the hero, and (3) a clear evolution in its representation, linked to sociohistorical changes in China.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències de la Comunicaci
Molecular transport in ion channels beyond electrostatics: nanoscale confinement, interfacial effects and ligand recognition
Doctorat internacionalThis thesis aims to elucidate the mechanisms governing ionic and molecular transport through ion channels beyond the scope of oversimplified classical electrostatic models. By combining electrophysiological, biochemical and theoretical approaches, different biological and synthetic systems are investigated, including the bacterial porin OmpF, the mitochondrial channel VDAC, the peptide Dynorphin A and a synthetic polyimide nanopore. The results reveal that under nanoconfinement, interfacial effects, charge regulation and specific molecular interactions become dominant, leading to transport behaviors that deviate from traditional continuum predictions. In concentrated solutions, a biphasic dependence of transport properties on electrolyte concentration is observed, whereas in dilute regimes, membrane and pore charges critically modulate conductance and selectivity, breaking canonical permeability–selectivity relationships. Furthermore, isoform-specific recognition between VDAC2 and the pro-apoptotic protein BAX is demonstrated, as well as the dual transport behavior of Dynorphin A. Overall, this work shows that nanoscale transport requires an integrated physical perspective, providing new insights for biomimetic nanofluidics and therapeutic strategies.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
