Experimental and predictive investigation of a vapor compression refrigeration system with thermoelectric subcooling and multi-objective optimization of operating conditions
Refrigeration systems are essential in daily life. However, increasing cooling demand requires developing more efficient systems with lower environmental footprints. The integration of a thermoelectric cooler with vapor compression refrigeration systems has recently attracted attention as a practical means to improve subcooling and enhance overall performance. The present study experimentally and predictively assesses a VCR system with thermoelectric subcooling (VCR-TECS) for several low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. The VCR system was improved by attaching thermoelectric modules to the condenser outlet, and tests were performed at voltages ranging from 1 to 10 V and water flow rates of 1 to 3 L/min. The introduction of thermoelectric subcooling raised evaporator cooling capacity to 8% and improved the system COP by 5-7% at moderate voltages (4-6 V). Three statistical models (Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Linear Regression) were developed using experimental data and validated. This was the best performance by Gradient Boosting, with an R² of more than 0.996 and an RMSE of 0.02, effectively reproducing the nonlinear trends in performance. The proposed optimization is a score-based multi-objective one that maximizes cooling capacity and COP, and minimizes total power input to determine the optimal operating conditions. Maximum unified scores were obtained by R513A (0.37) and R1234yf (0.36) at 4 V, which is an improvement in the performance of 35-40 % as compared with other refrigerants. In summary, the VCR-TECS structure offers a novel, simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly approach to improve refrigeration performance during low-voltage operation
This study examines the influence of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on the purchase of OTC medicines in Spain and the prescriptive role of social media, blogs, and health videoblogs. A survey of 336 users identified key factors affecting purchase intention: eWOM credibility and quality, sender reputation, and risk perception. Nearly half of the participants purchased medicines after exposure to eWOM, while 24% decided against a purchase based on it. Specialized blogs were perceived as the most reliable source, followed by YouTube and Instagram. The findings highlight the relevance of the digital environment in pharmaceutical communication and suggest important implications for the industry, healthcare professionals, and regulatory authorities. Strategies should focus on ensuring accurate, trustworthy information and reducing risks associated with self-medication. This study contributes to understanding how digital word-of-mouth shapes consumer behavior regarding non-prescription medicines in Spain and informs future research on online health communication.Programa de Doctorat en Màrquetin
Cooperative Robots for Construction — Material Handling and Stigmergic Methods
Doctorat internacionalAutonomous robotic systems are poised to transform the construction industry by enabling teams of mobile robots to collaborate on material handling and assembly tasks. This dissertation advances the state of the art in cooperative mobile robotics for construction through an integrated exploration of hardware development, control architecture, simulation, and experimental validation. We design and implement a novel omnidirectional robot platform with a modular design and a friction-based lifting mechanism, allowing multiple robots to jointly lift and transport building materials without the need for complex grippers. Using this platform, a distributed control architecture orchestrates multi-robot coordination, and we systematically evaluate how key parameters – including robot mass, movement speed, team size, and task allocation strategy – impact the efficiency of both individual and cooperative operations. In parallel, drawing inspiration from social insects, we investigate stigmergic construction methods as a decentralized approach to multi-robot assembly. Using a custom lightweight simulator and high-fidelity ARGoS simulations, we develop and assess rule-based strategies in which robots coordinate indirectly by modifying their environment. These experiments demonstrate that simple local interaction rules can give rise to complex emergent structures. We also introduce a gripper tool design for block manipulation to bridge the gap between simulation and physical implementation of stigmergic building. Overall, the results validate the feasibility of employing cooperative robots for both shared-load material handling and decentralized construction. This work provides new insights into the design of multi-robot platforms and control frameworks for the construction domain, and it outlines practical guidelines to inform future robotic construction systems.Programa de Doctorat en Informàtic
Stimuli-Responsive NHC-based Pincer Complexes for Catalysis
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis Doctoral Thesis demonstrates the potential of supramolecular and anion‑induced redox interactions as effective tools to endow transition metal pincer complexes with adaptive and reversible control over their electronic properties, and consequently over their catalytic behaviour. Systematic studies on Rh(I), Mn(I), and Pd(II) platforms revealed that these interactions can independently modulate the electronic structure and reactivity in a controlled and reversible manner. The incorporation of the NDI moiety transforms the pincer ligand into a multistimuli-responsive unit that mediates communication between external additives—such as halides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons—and the electronic state of the metal centre. This strategy moves beyond static ligand design and introduces a dynamic approach to catalyst tuning, enabling reversible switching between distinct activity states using mild and easily accessible stimuli. Overall, the study highlights supramolecular and redox-active ligand frameworks as versatile platforms for developing next-generation stimulus-responsive catalysts.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
Efficient and Stable Hydrogen Evolution from HI Splitting Using a Robust 2D Tin-Iodide Perovskite
Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production with 2D Ruddlesden–Popper tin-iodide perovskites has recently emerged as a promising route toward sustainable solar-to-fuel conversion. However, a major limitation of these systems lies in their rapid degradation caused by tin and iodide oxidation. In the present study, we report the synthesis of 4-fluorophenethylammonium tin-iodide (4FPSI) perovskite microcrystals in a mixture of hydroiodic acid (HI) and H2O, which exhibit remarkable long-term photostability and sustained photocatalytic H2 production via HI splitting. Intermittent light irradiation was shown to further boost H2 production by promoting efficient charge separation and suppressing the accumulation of trapped charge carriers that drive recombination. Notably, reused and aged materials showed enhanced photocatalytic performance, which theoretical simulations attributed to surface reconstruction that exposes additional tin catalytic active sites. The samples that underwent degradation after multiple photocatalytic tests could be recovered through a simple chemical treatment and restore the H2 production capability. Together, these findings highlight tin-iodide perovskites as highly promising photocatalysts for solar H2 production, combining durability, recyclability, and facile recovery strategies to simultaneously advance all key performance metrics.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume
Field Food losses reduction strategies: Air-pruning+clean tree
The Air-pruning action aims to improve fruit visibility and accessibility within the citrus tree by removing excess or old branches, especially in inner or upper areas. It facilitates more efficient harvesting, promotes better fruit development, and reduces food losses due to uncollected or hidden fruit. Also it includes the clean tree action to optimize citrus harvesting by ensuring that all fruit present on the tree—including those located in higher/less accessible areas or low caliber—is collected and utilized
