La creación del Colegio Universitario de Castellón

    No full text

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neurological disease of unknown origin that affects upper and lower motor neurons, causing progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. In Spain, it affects around 4,000 people. Neuronal degeneration leads to loss of motor function, spasticity, fasciculations, dysarthria, dysphagia, and respiratory failure, eventually progressing to tetraplegia and complete dependence. Its prognosis is unfavorable: only 20% of patients survive beyond 3–5 years after diagnosis. There is no curative treatment, so care must begin early through a multidisciplinary approach aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. ALS is considered an advanced disease from the time of diagnosis, given its irreversible progression, emotional impact, and high demand on healthcare resources. In addition, it raises important ethical dilemmas related to communication, autonomy, assisted dying, and discrimination due to advanced disease—a challenge that the upcoming ALS Law seeks to address.Programa de Doctorat en Ètica i Democràci

Igniting Technological and Non-Technological Innovation for Economic Performance: Enhancing Results by Investing in Human Capital

    No full text
This study investigates how strategic renewal, driven by the interaction among technological, marketing, and organizational innovation, enhances firms' economic performance. Using a panel dataset of 8871 Spanish firms covering the period 2009–2016, we provide empirical evidence on the different effects of each type of innovation and their interdependencies. The results reveal that both technological and organizational innovation have a direct and positive influence on economic performance, whereas marketing innovation contributes indirectly through its effect on technological innovation. Our study also shows human capital to be a strategic enabler in maximizing the benefits of innovation for economic performance—particularly in firms with lower levels of innovation. The analysis of the results suggests that, as firms' level of innovation increases, it becomes more difficult to capitalize on improvements in human capital for the economic exploitation of innovation. By focusing on Spain—a country positioned at an intermediate level of innovation, and often overlooked in academic discourse on innovation leaders or laggards—this study sheds light on the underexplored dynamics of innovation in moderately innovative economies.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

State of internal communication in Spain : a scoping review (2014-2024)

    No full text
Internal communication has been gaining increasing relevance in academia, boosting research output in the field. However, to date, no indexed journal articles have been identified that focus on characterizing studies conducted in Spain in this area. In this context, this study conducts a scoping review of academic research on internal communication in Spain within the field of social sciences over the past decade. The primary objective is to identify and characterize the most relevant academic articles in this area. In addition, several secondary objectives guide the research, including analyzing authorship patterns and institutional affiliations, identifying the most frequently addressed topics, and examining the bibliographic references cited in the studies. Furthermore, this study aims to classify the types of articles, determine their objects of study, and identify the predominant research methodologies used. Another key focus is identifying practical and theoretical implications, as well as research limitations reported by scholars in this field. To ensure a systematic and rigorous research process, the SALSA framework (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, Analysis) was applied. Moreover, the key elements of the PRISMA for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) framework were followed to enhance transparency and replicability. The evidence base comprises twenty-five articles. These studies were retrieved from four major academic databases: Web of Science, Scopus, Dialnet, and Epsilon AI. Moreover, the results show a high prevalence of co-authored articles and collaboration between universities. The analysis also indicates a clear trend toward studying internal communication in crisis contexts. Alongside crisis-related studies, there is also a strong presence of sector-specific analyses and case studies, particularly in industries such as healthcare and higher education. Beyond these dominant themes, the review identifies a growing interest in the relationship between internal communication, workplace well-being, and job satisfaction, as well as its connection to digitalization and its strategic role within organizations. Despite the wide range of topics explored, most studies exhibit a strong empirical orientation, although some literature reviews are also included in the sample. Qualitative methodologies predominate, surpassing both quantitative and mixed-method approaches. In terms of the object of study, research in this field focuses primarily on people, rather than on documents or digital communication platforms. Despite the notable increase in scholarly production on internal communication, several methodological limitations persist in the field. The most common issues include small sample sizes, self-selected or non-probabilistic sampling methods, and limited access to internal organizational data, which researchers often cite as a major obstacle. Finally, there is a paucity of practical implications and an absence of theoretical ones. This study highlights the importance of continuing to study internal communication from a variety of perspectives. To advance the field, researchers should focus on broadening and strengthening methodological approaches, improving the representativeness of samples, and enhancing the applicability of research findings to real-world professional contexts. A more structured and systematic research agenda in this area would contribute to reinforcing theoretical frameworks, fostering academic cohesion, enhancing knowledge transfer, and increasing the practical impact of scholarly research. Addressing these challenges will allow internal communication research to evolve into a more influential and well-established academic discipline, making valuable contributions to both academia and professional practic

    No full text
This dissertation examines the impact of environmental disclosure in the non-financial reports of European companies that adhere to the GRI methodology, focusing on the narrative tone and disclosure level in relation to environmental risks, in compliance with Directive 2014/95/EU. To achieve this, non-financial reports from companies in pollutant-intensive sectors (chemical, energy, and electric utilities) for the year 2018 were analyzed. Using the DICTION computational analysis and the Environmental Disclosure Index (IDA), the findings indicate that companies disclose only what is strictly required, adopting a neutral tone with low certainty. This ambiguity hinders the assessment of environmental performance and raises concerns about transparency. A significant and positive relationship was found only between disclosure levels and operational risk. The study underscores the need for stricter regulatory frameworks to foster sustainability and transparency.Programa de Doctorat en Economia i Empres

    Towards reproducible robotics research

    No full text
Given the complexity of robotic systems, reproducibility might be seen as less feasible in robotics than in other fields of research. However, reproducibility in robotics is necessary and possible. The community started to consider reproducibility issues in the 2000s. Some of the authors of this article were involved in a special interest group, started some 15 years ago, on Good Experimental Methodology (GEM) and Benchmarking. The group was created by a European robotics network called EURON, and the project was led by F.B., A.P.d.P. and now emeritus professor John Hallam, then at the University of Southern Denmark. The EURON GEM’s guidelines list basic requisites for reproducibility in robotics

A descriptive analysis of cultural references in the Spanish subtitling and dubbing of Indian cinema

    No full text
This doctoral thesis adopts the research framework of Descriptive Translation Studies to conduct an empirical, bottom-up analysis of Indian cultural references in translation. It is based on a corpus of 14 Indian feature films originally in Bengali, Hindi and English with subtitled and dubbed versions in Spanish. It thus presents an in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of coupled pairs of cultural references, examining their various types and the corresponding translation solutions detected. The main research tool consists of an Excel spreadsheet comprising a total of 836 cultural references. The study has a dual objective: firstly, to find out what types of cultural references may be detected in the chosen Indian films and their translated versions, and secondly, to examine the translation solutions adopted in the subtitled and dubbed versions of these references, with the final goal of extrapolating translation norms, or at least, conventions.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci

    No full text
Cataract is a chronic, age-related process defined by the development of lens opacification that results in decreased visual acuity. The determination of objective, reliable parameters can assist clinicians in preoperative decision-making for cataract surgery, thereby enabling optimization of the procedure. This doctoral thesis investigates the relationship between the Ocular Scatter Index (OSI) and the amount of ultrasound energy used during surgery, as well as its association with current clinical cataract grading systems and other objective parameters linked to vision loss. It also examines additional subjective indicators of vision-related quality of life, assessed before and after surgery.

Colonoscopy is the standard diagnostic technique, but some lesions may be missed. Endocuff Vision® is a device designed to improve colonic mucosa visibility. This study evaluated its effectiveness and safety compared to standard colonoscopy within the Spanish national CRC screening program. A randomized, multicenter, prospective clinical trial was conducted with 822 patients aged 50–70 years with a positive fecal occult blood test. Patients were assigned to undergo either Endocuff Vision-assisted colonoscopy (EVAC) or standard colonoscopy (SC). The adenoma detection rate was significantly higher in the EVAC group (59.8% vs. 51%; p=0.02). There were no differences in incomplete colonoscopies or adverse events between groups. In conclusion, Endocuff Vision improves adenoma detection without increasing risks, contributing to a reduction in interval CRC cases.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències Biomèdiques i Salu
