Teaching english in the 21st century: pedagogical translanguaging with multilingual adolescents
Doctorat industrialThis thesis examines the effect of pedagogical translanguaging on the development of cognate and morphological awareness in multilingual adolescents learning English as a third language. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study also analyses participants’ beliefs on multilingualism and pedagogical translanguaging. The pedagogical intervention, implemented with 86 multilingual adolescents in the province of Valencia, is based on the activation of the students’ whole linguistic repertoire by establishing cross-linguistic similarities. The instruments used included a cognate and morphological awareness test, a beliefs questionnaire, a translanguaging questionnaire and oral interviews. The results show that pedagogical translanguaging had a positive effect on the acquisition of third language vocabulary. In addition, participants reported favourable thoughts towards the inclusion of Spanish and Catalan in the English language classroom and showed positive beliefs regarding the implementation of pedagogical translanguaging.

This thesis examines the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on physical and mental health during emerging adulthood, taking into account cultural and contextual variables specific to Spain and Latin America. Study 1 focused on a sample of Spanish young adults, addressing the impact of ACEs on physical health—an area that has received little attention during this life stage. Study 2 analysed the relationship between ACEs, coping strategies, and the manifestation of psychopathic and altruistic traits. This study adopts an innovative approach by considering specific combinations of ACEs rather than analysing them in isolation. Study 3 was conducted with a sample of Latin American young adults, expanding the analysis to include expanded ACEs, which take into account economic and social factors relevant to that context. The thesis proposes culturally sensitive intervention strategies aimed at preventing and addressing the adverse impact of such experiences.Programa de Doctorat en Estudis Internacionals de Pau, Conflictes i Desenvolupamen
Analysis of the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America: The impact of built parkland in richness and abundance of birds
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalUrban expansion creates new bird habitats, prompting studies on how city elements affect these species. However, the influence of buildings remains under-investigated. This thesis analyzes the ecological role of urban centers in Europe and North America, assessing bird richness and abundance across scales and environmental variables, including buildings. The methodology combined local transect data with regional and international citizen science, analyzed using Excel and R. Findings show birds prefer historical buildings for nesting, and mid-rise buildings (two to four levels) correlate with greater bird richness and abundance. In conclusion, the study emphasizes integrating biodiversity into urban planning, highlighting the ecological value of historical buildings and the need for biodiversity-friendly measures to mitigate habitat loss. The combination of building height and impervious cover better predicts bird diversity than either alone. This work advances landscape ecology by incorporating vertical urban structure into biodiversity models.

[EN] Controlling bacterial and viral growth in surfaces is crucial in combating infectious diseases. Therefore, the development of glazes with bactericidal and viricidal effects for ceramic tiles appears highly advantageous. These glazes would facilitate personal and public hygiene due to the widespread use of ceramic tiles in the construction industry and urban planning (homes, hospitals, etc.).
Biocidal glazes have been developed from a silver containing frit. This frit has been formulated by substitution of a fraction of alkaline oxides for silver and obtained by melting and quenching the melt. Its composition allows the incorporation of the silver into the vitreous network. Silver-containing glazes for wall tiles and floor tiles had been obtained from the frit, but a fraction of the silver was present as metallic silver particles. The inhibitor effect of the glazes against bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and virus (TEGV) was verified according to ISO 22196:2011/JIS Z 2081/2010 and ISO 21702:2019 standards respectively.
The production of biocidal tiles was successfully scaled up while preserving their biocidal efficacy (mean results of 99.9%, 99.7% and 94.6% against E. coli, S. aureus and TEGV respectively). However, variability increased due to the lower reproducibility of the thermal cycles in industrial roller kilns. In addition, the silver content in the surface of the glaze was maintained after accelerated aging tests, pointing to a good durability of these properties.[ES] El control del crecimiento vírico y bacteriano sobre superficies es crucial para combatir enfermedades infecciosas.
This research was funded by the SINVIR project (INNEST/2021/19) granted by AVI (Agencia Valenciana de la Innovació)
