Classification of wildfires in relation to land cover types and associated variables by applying cluster analysis: a case study in the Iberian Peninsula
Wildfires are a major environmental problem that have both economic and ecological impacts. Wildfires typically spread in a particular pattern, determined by factors such as the elements on the ground that catch fire or their geographic location. This study reports and discusses how wildfires in the Valencian Community, Spain, have been spatially grouped in recent years (from 2016 to 2020). It also characterizes each cluster in terms of location and land cover. An exploratory analysis of the environmental variables associated with wildfires has been conducted using finite Gaussian mixture models in R (R package mclust). The primary findings can be used to better understand the types of wildfires that occur in individual spatial zones. Some interesting cluster patterns in specific geographical areas, such as river basins, have also been reported. The method can identify clusters of fires by detecting areas with similar characteristics at the land use level. It also allows for the implementation of measures aimed at reducing the impacts of wildfires and can help in the extinction of wildfires based on the characteristics of all the fires grouped using spatial and land cover dimensions

Decoding the impact of aging on the interaction between visual attention and working memory
Working memory (WM) is a temporally structured process with three subprocesses: encoding, maintenance, and retrieval. Encoding is essential for information entry into WM, particularly under limited processing resources, and is closely tied to visual attention, which selectively gates items into WM. This study examines the interaction between visual attention and WM across the lifespan, focusing on age-related changes. Using a delayed-match-to-sample task to assess WM, we tracked eye movements to analyse attentional deployment during encoding. Our results replicate previous findings of age-related declines in task performance and WM capacity, attributable to less thorough scrutiny of memory sets and diminished benefit from fixating on subsequently queried items among older participants. Task difficulty exacerbates these declines, with performance collapsing when memory loads exceed WM capacity -a pattern that begins around age 55 and becomes pronounced in later life. These results emphasise the crucial role of visual attention in WM encoding and its age-related modulation. Furthermore, our findings call into question the strict binary distinction between sequential and simultaneous processing, suggesting that serial effects in WM might emerge even under conditions of simultaneous presentations

Harris vs Trump: News treatment analysis of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the US 2024 presidential election
Treball Final de Grau en Periodisme. Codi: PE0932. The US elections are an event marked on the calendar for politics in Occident because of the country's importance and influence on the international scene. Within this context, and with the last few years as a framework, the elections are of immense importance both because of the (possible) change of government and policies that affect its citizens and, also, because of the growing political tension that the country has been experiencing over the past years. This is where media importance, when it comes to covering politicians comes in, since, as agenda setting establishes, what the media focuses on the most will be what consumers retain most. To establish the issues and candidates that carry the most weight within the news, a quantitative analysis of the following media outlets has been made: The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and USA Today. Overall, 104 news pieces were analysed, examining the content and topics of the pieces, which political actors received the most coverage, the gender bias of the topics covered and the criticisms of and towards the presidential candidates. Results show that campaigns (including polls and rallies held by the candidates) have more weight in the coverage while Donald Trump is the candidate who receives more coverage, that gender bias is evident for one of the two candidates and that the most critics the candidates make and receive are personal
Geographic and ethnic inequalities in total and central obesity, and physical fitness among preschool children : Insights from the PREFIT project
Background and objectives :
Obesity and physical fitness are known to be influenced by various geographic factors and ethnicity in children. However, there is limited evidence on the level to which these factors can influence very early in life, at preschool age. This study aimed to describe and compare total and central obesity and physical fitness according to geographic factors and ethnicity in preschoolers.
Methods :
This cross-sectional study included 3179 preschoolers (4.6 ± 0.9y, 52.8% boys). Geographic factors (location and type of area: rural/urban) were assessed based on the school setting, while ethnicity was determined through parental self-report. Total and central obesity and physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, speed-agility, balance) were assessed using the PREFIT battery.
Results :
Preschoolers from southern regions of Spain presented higher total obesity along with lower performance in cardiorespiratory fitness and lower-limb muscular strength compared to their northern peers (p ≤ 0.017). However, they demonstrated greater levels of upper-limb muscular strength and balance (p < 0.001). Preschoolers from rural areas of Spain showed higher central obesity but better fitness performance compared to those from urban areas (p ≤ 0.004). White and African preschoolers showed lower levels of total and central obesity than Latin preschoolers (p ≤ 0.003) and performed better in upper-limb muscular strength and speed–agility compared to Asian or Latin preschoolers (p ≤ 0.037).
Conclusion :
This study highlights significant physical health inequalities among preschoolers based on geographical factors and ethnic backgrounds. These findings underscore the need for targeted public health strategies to address socioeconomic and environmental determinants of early-life health disparities

This undergraduate thesis aims to analyze the impact of learning Spanish as a second
language (L2) on the subjective well-being of adult migrants living in Peñíscola, Castellón..
The study is based on the premise that acquiring the host country's language can positively
influence emotional well-being, integration, and self-efficacy among migrants. To this end, a
quantitative pretest-posttest design with a single group was implemented. Participants were
between 20 and 46 years old and faced administrative and social vulnerability. The
intervention consisted of eight workshops integrated into Spanish classes provided by local
social services, carried out between March and April 2025. The sessions combined language
learning activities with psychosocial content focused on reinforcing self-esteem, valuing
cultural identity, and recognizing emotions. Simplified and adapted versions of the
Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (4-point Likert) and the Life Satisfaction Scale (4-point Likert)
with emoticons were used, adjusted to participants’ A1 linguistic level. Results show a
general improvement in the average scores of both variables after the intervention. These
findings suggest that learning Spanish as an L2, when combined with adapted
psychoeducational activities, can be a valuable resource to promote emotional well-being
and social integration of adult migrants in local community contexts
Women and Society in Nigeria: Analyzing Female Roles in Happiness, Like Water by Chinelo Okparanta
Treball Final de Grau en Estudis Anglesos. Codi: EA0938. Curs acadèmic: 2023/2024The aim of the present study is to develop an analysis of the three principal roles attributed to Nigerian women, and their representation through the different female characters presented in the book Happiness, Like Water. The understanding of Nigerian social structures is crucial to contextualize the primary functions Nigerian women develop in it. Despite the fact that Nigerian women have experienced notable progress in various aspects of society, traditional roles and expectations are still present in the current society. This research explores the concepts of motherhood, marriage and the occupational field, highlighting the significance of the roles women develop in them. Early marriage and procreation have been regarded as the primary expectations placed upon women, with an emphasis on bearing numerous offspring. Consequently, women are often relegated to less skilled employment and their participation in formal education and University programs remains limited. The diverse roles assumed by women in these three areas of society and their representation in the short stories that form the book have been examined. This analysis is structured according to these societal roles, examining how it is embodied by the diverse female characters. This is supported by numerous examples that reinforce the previously discussed concepts. Consequently, it can be concluded that these three roles are accurately represented in different forms throughout the ten stories that conform the book. Therefore, the portrayal of the female characters within the narratives can be seen as reflective of contemporary Nigerian society
