A descriptive analysis of cultural references in the Spanish subtitling and dubbing of Indian cinema
This doctoral thesis adopts the research framework of Descriptive Translation Studies to conduct an empirical, bottom-up analysis of Indian cultural references in translation. It is based on a corpus of 14 Indian feature films originally in Bengali, Hindi and English with subtitled and dubbed versions in Spanish. It thus presents an in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of coupled pairs of cultural references, examining their various types and the corresponding translation solutions detected. The main research tool consists of an Excel spreadsheet comprising a total of 836 cultural references. The study has a dual objective: firstly, to find out what types of cultural references may be detected in the chosen Indian films and their translated versions, and secondly, to examine the translation solutions adopted in the subtitled and dubbed versions of these references, with the final goal of extrapolating translation norms, or at least, conventions.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
“From clues to competence”: Integrating TBLT and GBL in EFL instruction through a learner-centered unit on detectives and mysteries
Treball Final de Màster Universitari en Professor/a d'Educació Secundària Obligatòria i Batxillerat, Formació Professional i Ensenyaments d'Idiomes. Codi SAP419. Curs: 2024/2025This master’s thesis presents a learning situation designed for first grade Baccalaureate students as part of the subject English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It targets students’ communicative competence by engaging them in meaningful tasks that foster language use in context. The unit is structured around the topic of mysteries and detectives, aiming to align with the students interests and therefore to create a more enjoyable learning experience for
them. This, in turn, intends to promote engagement and active participation in the classroom, taking into account the motivational component and the impact social interaction (e.g. with peers, teachers and L2 speakers) may have on it. This proposal also incorporates the development of other major skills such as critical thinking, creativity and collaborative work. The design follows a learner-centered approach, and it has been grounded on the principles of
Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Game-Based Learning (GBL). It is also key to highlight that both self-reflection and constant feedback are key elements that have been taken into account throughout the development of the proposal. All in all, this learning situation intends to contribute to a more engaging EFL classroom environment, in which students are expected to improve their communication skills while developing a more
positive attitude towards English learning
The Use of Animated Films as a Resource to Teach Oral Requests and Responses to Young Language Learners: An Evaluative Analysis
This chapter evaluates the authenticity of request and response interactions in animated films,
with the aim of exploring their potential for teaching pragmatics to young language learners
(YLLs). Findings from a film corpus analysis revealed a prevalent use of imperative
constructions in requests, mirroring early language acquisition patterns; an extensive
utilization of internal and external request modification devices characterised by low syntactic
complexity, consistent with developmental patterns; and a predominant occurrence of
requests followed by varied response types. Notably, granting responses emerged as the most
common, encompassing a wide array of acceptance/agreement tokens and confirmation
utterances. These findings underscore the value of animated films as a valuable resource for
expanding YLLs’ pragmalinguistic repertoire in requesting and responding, necessary for
making informed choices in social interactions and fostering agency. However, caution is
advised due to tendencies towards issuing requests as imperatives and providing flat refusals
in responses. Despite their provision of more comprehensive dialogues than textbooks, their
effective use necessitates a critical awareness of the depicted pragmatic features
Ancestral Protein-Based Lighting
Protein-optoelectronics is a paradigm toward eco-designed and sustainable technologies. The challenge is, however, how to preserve the native activity of proteins upon device fabrication/operation in non-native environments (solvents, organic/inorganic interfaces, and working temperatures/irradiations). Herein, a new vision to identify and design ancestral-like fluorescent proteins (FPs) is proposed. Using ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) out of a large dataset (221) of the best modern FPs suitable for photon down-conversion in bio-hybrid light-emitting diodes (Bio-HLEDs) a historical-genetic reconstruction (family tree) was obtained, identifying a possible common ancestral FP. This computationally designed protein is produced in bacteria, featuring outstanding photoluminescence quantum yields in solution (e.g., 90%/80% for green-/red-emitting forms) and a strong tendency to agglomerate in polymer coatings. This resulted in red-emitting Bio-HLEDs that outperformed the reference with ≈2-fold enhanced stabilities. The resplendent green-/red-emission of ancestral-like FP itself and its respective devices led us to coin this new protein as QuetzalFP. Overall, it is set in ASR as an effective concept to reshape protein-optoelectronics allowing us to identify i) many interesting ancestral FPs for lighting and ii) QuetzalFP as stepping-stone platform for protein engineering.S.W. and A.M. contributed equally to this work. Devenir maestra intercultural.
In a society in constant change and transformation marked by globalization, migratory movements, global crises, and armed conflicts, it is necessary to create intercultural policies that build bridges between cultures coexisting in the same territory. This study is based on introspection using the autoethnographic method with the aim of transforming the ethnocentric patterns implicit in our outlook, our paradigms, and our teaching practices. Through autoethnographic narrative, it shows part of the process of becoming an intercultural teacher, highlighting that academic training can include other paradigms and pedagogical approaches that open our outlook. This autoethnographic method relates ethnographic research to the artistic creative process. The autoethnographic narrative becomes a contribution to the generation of scientific knowledge that allows us to make sense of intercultural encounters and to intervene critically and democratically in our life and in the other people's lives we encounter. Finally, as future lines of research, we propose to use the autoethnographic narrative in teacher background.
This doctoral dissertation studies the reception of the category of transsexuality and the representations of trans women in the social discourse in Spanish and Catalan during the Transition period. This was a crucial time, as it marked the first mass presence of these identities in what we have termed the ‘sarampión travesti.’ From the perspective of cultural studies and gender studies –and more specifically, trans studies – it focuses on analysing a series of cultural objects -novels, films and newspapers-, both endogenous and exogenous, that between 1976 and 1983 addressed the trans experience in that period and explicitly engaged with the then “new” medical category. The thesis concludes that the reception of the medical category in Spain occurred under very particular conditions, generally removed from the medical institution where it had originated in other national contexts.Programa de Doctorat en Llengües Aplicades, Literatura i Traducci
Pure Deep Red Electroluminescence in Mixed Phase Quasi-2D Tin Iodide Perovskite Heterostructure
Mixed cation quasi-2D tin iodide perovskites are promising materials for deep-red to NIR emitting light-emitting diode (LED) applications. However, phase purity remains the major concern to avoid mixed emissions from two or more wavelengths. This work presents the evolution of pure deep red electroluminescence (EL) centred at ≈700 nm corresponding to the emission of pure n = 2 2D crystalline phase. However, structural and optical studies evidenced the formation of mixed-phase heterostructures consisting of n = 1, n = 2, and n = ∞ phase (i.e., FASnI3). It is observed that altering the mixed cation ratio, phase distribution is modified, affecting the EL behavior, causing the observation or absence of the n = 1 2D phase EL emission peak. Selective charge transport and their cascade mechanism illustrates the pure color EL evolution with the support from transient absorption spectroscopic studies. In this regard, a case study is provided along with the supportive rationalities behind the exceptional evolution of pure deep red EL even from the mixed-phase perovskite, reported for the first time in case of quasi-2D tin iodide perovskite
Augmented Reality Annotations and Realistic Integration of 3D Models in the Real World - Industry Application.
Treball Final del Màster Universitari en Sistemes Intel·ligents (Pla de 2013)The growing digitization of industry demands more intuitive systems for managing contextual information linked to physical assets. However, most Augmented Reality applications still rely on static content or artifcial markers,
offering limited interaction and lacking persistent data integration. This work
presents a mobile Augmented Reality application that recognizes industrial
objects and overlays aligned 3D models, enabling users to create, edit, and consult contextual annotations stored persistently in the cloud. The system was
designed with a user-centered interface to reduce cognitive load and facilitate
use in real conditions. A qualitative evaluation with participants simulating
industrial workflows showed the tool to be intuitive, stable, and suitable for
real-world tasks. These results highlight the value of combining Augmented
Reality with persistent annotation mechanisms to support documentation,
traceability, and collaboration in Industry 4.0 and 5.0 contexts
Los resultados son preocupantes, se evidencia la necesidad de consolidar el cuidado mediante indicadores y estandarizaciónCare management in Chile, recognized since 1997, gave nurses a strategic role in the hospital structure, especially after the Health Reform of 2000. This thesis analyzed its influence through four studies. The first one evaluated the trend of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, showing an annual increase of 2%. The second examined bloodstream infections linked to central venous catheters, identifying a significant increasing trend at the national level. The third studied the prevalence of pressure ulcers, finding a year-on-year increase of 11.33%. Finally, the fourth, of a qualitative nature, explored the perceptions of nurse managers, highlighting challenges, risks and the need for standardization. Overall, the findings show a sustained increase in nursing-sensitive indicators, which demonstrates the importance of consolidating tools that strengthen the professional role and give greater visibility to care management in the hospital structure.Programa de Doctorat en Ciències de la Infermeri
Cognitive training in Multiple Sclerosis: behavioural and neuroimaging evidence from a restorative working memory training.
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalPeople with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) often experience cognitive impairment, particularly affecting working memory (WM) and information processing speed (IPS). This thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of an intensive WM training program in PwMS and identify clinical and neurobiological predictors of its efficacy. Thirty-five PwMS completed a 10-day n-back training and underwent neuropsychological and neuroimaging assessments before and after the intervention. Results showed significant improvements in both the trained task and untrained WM/IPS tasks, indicating near transfer effects. Thalamic volume and baseline WM/IPS performance had a direct influence on training outcomes, with the latter mediating the impact of other variables. Resting-state functional connectivity of the default mode network (rsFC-DMN) emerged as the most robust predictor. Overall, the training proved effective in PwMS, and both structural and cognitive integrity, along with baseline rsFC-DMN, predicted the extent of the benefits. This project underscores the relevance of timely cognitive rehabilitation.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi
