Pragma-stylistics of citation: the imperfect and pluperfect as evidential signs in the informative text

    No full text
This article analyses the pragmastylistic values of the imperfect and pluperfect preterite in journalistic news texts from the perspective of evidentiality. Based on a corpus of news items from the main Spanish newspapers, the results are offered in relation to these verb tenses as signs of evidentiality which contribute to determining the narrator’s position with respect to the sources on which the informative discourse is based and the content of the message. In this line, three main models of reproductive frameworks centred on the past appear: the one constituted from structures linked to the direct and indirect style, the one that reproduces an act of communication marked by a nominal reference and the one that points to the descriptive aspect as opposed to the dominant narrative sequence

Matter and Proportionality in the Learning Garden with Pre-Service Teachers

    No full text
In this study, we present a didactic experience carried out in a public university with 60 students enrolled in the 2nd year of the Primary Education Teaching Degree. This experience consisted of implementing a teaching and learning sequence in which proportionality problems (mathematics content) and pure substances and mixtures (experimental science content) were addressed together in an ecodidactic garden context. This work presents the results obtained through the analysis of the students' responses. Our findings suggest that pre-service teachers have difficulties similar to those of primary and secondary students in the use of measuring instruments and conversion units, as well as in the calculation of proportions in mathematics and conceptual errors at a microscopic and macroscopic level in experimental sciences. This study highlights the need to design and implement strategies to support students in their formative process in relation to the contents of proportion and matter. As an added value in our work, we emphasize the interdisciplinary connection between mathematics and experimental sciences, offering a more real-life perspective of science

Structural Cerebellar and Lateral Frontoparietal Networks are altered in CUD: An SBM Analysis

    No full text
Repetitive drug use results in enduring structural and functional changes in the brain. Addiction research has consistently revealed significant modifications in key brain networks related to reward, habit, salience, executive function, memory and self-regulation. Techniques like Voxel-based Morphometry have highlighted large-scale structural differences in grey matter across distinct groups. Source-based Morphometry (SBM) takes this a step further by incorporating the Independent Component Analysis to detect shared patterns of grey matter variation, all without requiring prior selection of regions of interest. However, SBM has yet to be employed in the study of structural alteration patterns related to cocaine addiction. Therefore, we performed this analysis to explore alterations in structural covariance specific to cocaine addiction. Our study involved 40 individuals diagnosed with Cocaine Use Disorder (CUD) and 40 matched healthy controls. Participants with CUD completed clinical questionnaires assessing the severity of their dependence and other relevant clinical variables. Following the adjustment for age-related effects, we observed notable disparities between groups in two structural independent components, which we identified as the structural cerebellar network and the structural lateral frontoparietal network, which display opposing trends. Specifically, the individuals with CUD exhibited a heightened contribution to the cerebellar network but simultaneously demonstrated a reduced contribution to the lateral frontoparietal network compared to the healthy controls. These findings unveil distinctive covariance patterns of neuroregulation linked with cocaine addiction, which indicates an interruption in the typical structural development in an affected lateral frontoparietal network, while suggesting an extended pattern of neuroregulation within the cerebellar network in individuals with CUD

Response to Water Stress of Eight Novel and Widely Spread Citrus Rootstocks

    No full text
Drought is a problematic abiotic stress affecting citrus crops in the Mediterranean basin and the rootstock plays a fundamental role in adopting adaptive mechanisms in response to water deficit. The aim of this study is to evaluate the response of eight rootstocks under three treatments imposed: control (100% of reference evapotranspiration, Et0), 66% Et0 and 50% Et0. The rootstock genotypes studied were C35 citrange, Bitters, Carpenter and Furr which have been recently spread and so far, little investigated, while others have been widely used especially in the Mediterranean citrus industry, i.e., Citrus macrophylla, C. volkameriana, Swingle citrumelo and Carrizo citrange. Morphological analyses, leaf chlorophyll content determination, physiological measurement, proline accumulation, malondialdehyde determination and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured. The results exhibited that Bitters and Furr showed an increment in leaf area to reduce the effects of drought conditions. A decrement in gas exchanges and xylem water potential was noticed in Carrizo and C35 citrange at both water shortage treatments. Carrizo exhibited a significant increase in malondialdehyde at both stresses (90.3 and 103.3%, for 66 and 50% Et0). Bitters and Furr performed better than the other rootstocks with regard to enzymatic and hormonal assays. Specifically, Bitters showed a significant reduction in CAT (−68.6%), SOD (−82.5%) and APX (−36.7%). Furthermore, Bitters and Furr were closely related to morphological parameters, e.g., leaf area and root length, and physiological measurements. C. volkameriana showed a decrease in xylem water potential, while overall Carrizo and C35 citranges showed a susceptible response to water stress reducing morphological and physiological measurements

Internet-Delivered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (iCBT) for Spanish-Speaking Adults with Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD): A Randomized Feasibility Trial

    No full text
Losing a loved one is a painful process that usually diminishes over time. Despite that, one out of ten bereaved adults are at risk of developing Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) Internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapies (iCBTs) can reach individuals in need of therapy and are both cost-effective and clinically effective. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of an iCBT for Spanish-speaking individuals with PGD (GROw) compared to the same intervention delivered in a face-to-face videoconferencing format. As a secondary objective, the potential efficacy of GROw was explored. A total of 31 participants were randomized to the experimental group (N = 16) (GROw) and the active control group (N = 15) (videoconferencing treatment). There were four assessment points: baseline, after intervention, and 3- and 12-month follow-ups. Both GROw and videoconferencing treatments were well accepted in terms of preferences, expectations, satisfaction and evaluation about the usefulness of the intervention, and showed significant symptomatology reduction with large effect sizes in most of the outcomes. The dropout rate was 50% in the GROw and 33.33% in the videoconferencing group. GROw is a feasible, well-accepted iCBT for the treatment of PGD with promising results related to its potential efficacy. This research was funded by the 2018 Research Promotion Plan of the Universitat Jaume I (grant number: UJI-2018-57), by the Plan to promote research at Universitat Jaume I (grant number: PREDOC/2018/45), by CIBERON, an initiative of the ISCIII (grant number: CB06 03/0052), by the Grant Prometeo Programme for Research Groups of Excellence (grant number: CIPROM/2021/041—Project “IMPULSA”) and by the Convocatòria 2024 d’ajudes a grups d’investigació actius en captació de recursos del pla estatal d’I+D+i (grant numbers: GACUJIMA/2024/15 and GACUJIMA/2024/19). Labor, work, and action: the unmaking of an LGBTIQ+ migrant network of interpreters compounding a cross-border minority tax

    No full text
International organizations have long championed principles of human rights, dignity, and equality. However, the lived experiences of LGBTIQ+ interpreters working under temporary contracts reveal structural inequalities, particularly as remote interpreting and neoliberal labor policies reshape the profession. This study conceptualizes their experiences through Hannah Arendt’s tripartite distinction between labor, work, and action to reveal how institutional structures produce and sustain a minority tax—an accumulation of burdens placed disproportionately on non-dominant identities. The research draws on semi-structured interviews conducted with twelve LGBTIQ+ interpreters employed under temporary arrangements in international organizations. Using a phenomenologically informed thematic analysis and guided by Arendt’s framework, the study explores interpreters’ narratives across three intersecting axes: gender identity, migratory status, and temporary employment. Following a hermeneutic interpretive cycle with participant feedback, the analysis reveals an increase in survival-based tasks (labor), difficulties in establishing professional continuity and recognition (work), and curtailed opportunities for political engagement (action). Arendt’s categories illuminate how the erosion of political space within international organizations depoliticizes LGBTIQ+ interpreters and impedes the formation of solidarity networks. Reforms are suggested to simultaneously address survival conditions, professional stability, and participatory agency to dismantle the mechanisms that perpetuate exclusion under the guise of flexibility and technological innovation

Meditation instruction to induce self-meta-thinking and its inhibitory effect on emotional reactivity and social judgment

    No full text

Design and Implementation of a Musical System for the Development of Creative Activities Through Electroacoustics in Educational Contexts

    No full text
In the field of music education, the incorporation of technology originally designed for professionals presents both significant opportunities and challenges. These technologies, although advanced and powerful, are often not adapted to meet the specific needs of the educational environment. Therefore, this study details the design and implementation process of a system consisting of a hardware device called “Play Box” and associated software “Imaginary Play Box”. The design sciences research methodology (DSRM) specifically adapted to software development was used to structure the project. The three phases shown in this study ranged from the conception of an initial prototype to the realisation of working software. During the design phase, a questionnaire was developed to evaluate various aspects of the software, such as the visual interface, the programming of components, and the sound interactivity provided by the Play Box. The technique of panels of experts in music pedagogy and programming in MAX-MSP was used to obtain critical feedback. This expert evaluation was crucial to iterate and polish the process of iteration and refining the software, culminating in a beta version optimised for the creation of electroacoustic music for music education

Brecha Digital y de Género en el Ámbito Universitario. El Teletrabajo como Herramienta de Conciliación en la UPV

    No full text
Treball final de Màster Universitari en Igualtat i Gènere en l'Àmbit Públic i Privat (Pla de 2013). Codi: SRM042.
